A Denver pet treat maker is recalling dozens of different products -- from chicken jerky and pig ears to buffalo hearts -- because they might be contaminated with salmonella.
It's the third recall since the fall by Kasel Associated Industries and covers all products manufactured at the Colorado facility from April 20 through Sept. 19, 2012. The firm previously declined to recall its treats, despite urging from the federal Food and Drug Administration.
The recall is not related to the FDA's ongoing investigation into pet illnesses and deaths tied to chicken jerky pet treats made in China.
The Kasel recall includes several popular brands, including items sold at Costco. Kasel is recalling Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature's Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco and Best Bully Stick items. The products include best buy dates through Oct. 3, 2014.
The treats could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, which could lead to illness in pets -- and in people who come in contact with the products or pets who've consumed them. Symptoms of salmonella infection in pets include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have decreased appetite and no other signs.
Similar symptoms can appear in humans. Salmonella infection typically causes illness that lasts only a few days, but in young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems, the infection can be severe and require hospitalization.
The list of recalled products includes 48 separate items. For the full list, click here.

Which brand do you smoke?
Make your own companion animal treats.
Our mainstay is liver and I just added gizzards.
Thoroughly wash the liver in cold water and squeeze. Bake in any pan large enough to have liver flat even if it's a double layer. I use a slow oven for several hours 'til liver is cooked through but still soft enough to cut into half inch or so sized pieces. Put the pieces back in the pan and bake at lowest temperature until they are dry enough to keep. My oven is old enough to have a pilot so I leave them in over night.
Both my dogs and cats love these.
You need to be careful feeding liver to dogs. Its fine occasionally in small amounts. Just like Chicken Jerky, feeding too much may cause problems.

I gave up buying dog food and make my dog's food -- and now need to give my dog treats. She's completely content with pressured cooked skinless chicken (without any bones or gristle), wild rice (not white rice) and vegetables.
She's very happy and healthy.
I'll be right over Abby.
