Does pot really lower IQ? It's not so simple

By Tia Ghose, LiveScience

Marijuana permanently lowers IQ by several points in adolescents, according to research published in August. But a new study suggests that factors related to economic class and home life, not marijuana use, may have caused that IQ drop.

Researchers who conducted the new study, published today (Jan. 14) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, did not have access to the original data from a cohort of New Zealand teenagers. Instead, Ole Rogeberg, a labor economist at the Frisch Center in Norway, used a computer simulation to show that, in theory, the same IQ effects could be explained by socioeconomic factors that cause IQ-decreasing behaviors.

The new results are sure to ignite a firestorm of debate over whether marijuana permanently harms the growing brain.

"The kinds of environments you are in do affect your IQ," Rogeberg said. Good education and challenging jobs can boost intelligence, but "if people are pushed out or decide to move out of these kinds of arenas, they will tend to see an IQ decline, and they will also be the type of people who tend to take up cannabis smoking during adolescence."

The original study can't rule out the possibility that other factors could play a role in the link between IQ and marijuana usage, said Susan Tapert, a neuropsychologist at the University of California, San Diego, who was not involved in the study, in an email.

"This was an excellent study – large, and followed the same individuals over time.  Even still, the possibility of some other unmeasured issue to drive this link remains," Tapert wrote.

The initial study, by researchers Madeline Meier, Terrie Moffitt and Avshalom Caspi of Duke University, relied on an unprecedented amount of data from a cohort of 1,037 people from Dunedin, New Zealand, who have been followed for more than three decades. The exhaustive study tracked people from age 7 onward, subjecting them to IQ tests, collecting blood samples, and interviewing parents and teachers at several points along the way.

The team found that marijuana lowered IQ by as much as eight points for heavy, lifelong users who started in adolescence. Marijuana use had no effect if people picked up the habit as adults, suggesting that marijuana was especially harmful for developing brains. [ Adolescent Angst: 10 Facts About the Teen Brain ]

But socioeconomic class and family structure can change IQ over time. For instance, poorer children tend to choose less challenging schools or work, even if they start out with the same IQ as higher-income kids. Economic class may also affect the development of traits like motivation and perseverance that could affect later-life IQ.

Rogeberg created a mathematical model to see if the apparent effect of marijuana on IQ could be explained by socioeconomic factors.

He found they could.

That doesn't mean marijuana is harmless, Rogeberg told LiveScience. Instead, the original researchers should do a more thorough analysis to prove that marijuana, and not other aspects of the pot-smoking lifestyle, cause lower IQ, he said.

That should include testing to see whether cannabis use altered individual people's IQ trajectories from age 7 onward. Research should also look at the cumulative impact of various factors, such as home life or education level, that may negatively impact IQ, to see if this cumulative effect could explain the drop seemingly caused by pot smoking.

"It might be the totality of factors could explain a large part of the effect that they found," Rogeberg said.

In response, the authors of the past scientific paper conducted a new analysis and found that IQ overall remained fairly stable in the Dunedin participants, they said in a statement. They also only included kids from middle-class families, eliminating the effects of socioeconomic status, they said.

But Rogeberg says those steps can't rule out other factors as the cause for lower IQ.

"While interesting, the new analysis is not at all sufficient to address these concerns – but I look forward to seeing a fuller analysis in time," Rogeberg said.

I think marijuana puts a person's mind into a relaxed state. So many people nowadays are multi-tasking and overly concerned about being productive 24/7. They can use this to give their brain a vacation, maybe to relax and read a book, enjoy some art, etc.. That's why some call it mind-expanding.

Here's an independent study: Check out your short term memory loss in your 60's. You'll probably be working at McDonald's - IF you can keep the pace up!

Short term memory declines after age 40 as an age related phenomenon. It doesn't have anything to do with pot. Even people who don't smoke pot experience age related short term memory decline.

However, what you don't see in pot smokers is Korsakoff's Syndrome; a well known consequence of chronic alcohol ingestion. Complete and total dementia.

This study was bogus. The ONLY way you can properly judge the effects, is to study a control group who all live the exact same life, same education, same home lives, same everything. Even the same food. With one half smoking pot, and the other half not smoking, being the only difference. And the half that smokes, need to all smoke the same amount at the same times.

And not everyone is the same anyway. There will be natural differences that are normal between people. We are not all the same. So even the results of a control group like I explained above, would need to be taken with a grain of salt. 100's of Millions of functioning working people smoke pot, many for 40-50 years and longer, with no discernible effects at all. Marijuana is not harmful by any reasonable standard. The bakery sells more harmful stuff. I mean that.

Besides, no one advocates letting kids smoke pot anyway.

      Two notes;

      1) As a quant analyst, this study really bugs me. It's obviously a case of selection bias; it's NOT simply economic conditions and family life, it's the fact that people living under those conditions have a much higher predisposition to choosing to engage in drug use in the first place. The causation still stems from the drug use. Let's think a little harder in determining the model and funtional relationships in these so-called "ground-breaking" studies.

      2) The people in this thread who are claiming that marijuana use has enhanced their intelligence are fooling themselves. It may remove some inhibitions that constrain "risk-taking" in thought, but it does not enhance ability to perceive. It reduces the "cost of thought" while it decreases your gross capacity; the net effect is the real question.

This study did not use the scientific method, and therefore cannot be used to determine cause and effect. It can only be used to indicate a correlation. And correlation has been shown, in any number of studies, to poverty and family functioning in non-pot smoking individuals.

Perhaps you missed the point of participants being selected at the age of 7 and then followed longitudinally. No where did it state that all participants fell into a lower SES category. There was no selection bias.

Have any cognitive psychological studies to back up that assumption? Economic theory applied to cognitive function never holds true in acuality.

Correlation does not imply causation. And that is exactly what a review of the study states. There are numerous other factors that could be responsible for the differences seen.

I read a High Times artical once about a guy that was in a Gov study on the effects of weed. They had to take Marinol, a weed derivative in pill form, and smoke as many joints as they wanted a day. He quit before the end of the program without being paid. He found out the study was to find out how much weed it took to make people sick....

On more than one occasion mental paralysis has blocked my work on a programming problem. A toke or two later, the ideal solution is obvious.

And what claims can you make about my intelligence?

How about my standing in school? Can you infer that?

How about my jobs? Can you determine from my posts my work ethic or intelligence at my jobs?

Defend all you want. Say all you want. I wouldn't believe your "stories" about how smart you are on an internet post anyway. But, defend away! You obviously are very sure that you are the be-all-and-end all of the blessings of pot. I don't care. I know where you will end up. Enjoy your pot and alcohol all you want. I don't care. Just don't like it when people who know not what they speak about speak as a "know-it-all". Your arrogance shows an extremely low emotional IQ. Intelligence IQ means nothing without emotional IQ.

Because you can't possibly believe that someone who smokes pot could possibly be have been in TAG all through school, couldn't possible have a successful career, or be getting a 4.0 and in good standing with a graduate school.

And really... you're talking about me being arrogant when you wont even back up your lame attempts at claims?

The question shouldn't be, "Does marijuana lower IQ's in people?" because it's an off based ground to fight the total legalization... the question shoud be "What lowers IQ more... Pot or Alcohol?" I believe we ALL know the answer to that.

Do you honestly believe alcohol will ever be illegal? So, it's unfair to judge in this capacity. I bet cigarette smoking lowers IQ or why else would anyone be stupid enough to smoke???! Get out of our life, government. We were born free, supposedly. The government is TOO involved in our lives.

I don't disassociate with others for what they do, but I won't sit around with them while they extol the wonders of pot or alcohol to others. Their choice, but do it with your eyes open. Don't pretend this isn't harming you and extolling the virtues of it can and will harm kids!

My friends, however, are not drunks or dope-heads. I prefer clear-headed people. A drink or two at a party, fine. But, I don't make friends with drunks or dope-heads.
