Subscribe to RSSThe Secretary of State has been undergoing treatment for a blood clot just below her ear that was reportedly caused by the concussion she suffered in mid-December. She is expected to make a complete recovery. NBC News chief science correspondent Robert Bazell reports.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton remained hospitalized Tuesday for a blood clot in her head, but her doctors say she has no brain damage and is expected to recover completely.
Clinton, who fainted and suffered a concussion earlier this month, is being treated with blood thinners to help shrink the clot, which is in one of the veins between the brain and her skull.
"In the course of a routine follow-up MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed,” Dr. Lisa Bardack of Mt. Kisco Medical Group in New York and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said in a joint statement.
“This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the secretary with blood thinners. She will be released once the medication dose has been established.”
Sec. of State Hillary Clinton was supposed to return to work later this week until doctors discovered a blood clot had formed in a vein between her brain and skull. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
The statement helps answer questions about Clinton’s condition, outside experts said. “This is different than a lot of assumptions that people made, which is that it was a deep vein thrombosis in her leg,” said Dr. Alex Valadka, a spokesman for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and a practicing neurologist in Austin, Texas.
The statement from Clinton’s doctors suggested she would recover fully.
“In all other aspects of her recovery, the Secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff,” they said.
Valadka said such a clot can be very dangerous.
“This could potentially be very serious because so much blood goes through your brain,” Valadka told NBC news. “If you block one of the major draining pathways, you can get a stroke.”
Valadka said standard treatment would be to infuse a bloodthinner such as heparin right away, and to then put a patient onto blood thinner pills for a fews weeks or months.
“The interesting question is how is this related to her concussion, if at all?” Valadka asked.
Clinton, 65, is known for hitting the road hard and she’s logged close to a million miles in travel, having visited 112 countries while in office. She had planned to step down in 2013 and was widely considered a potential front-runner for the Democratic nomination for president, if she chose to run again in 2016.
The extensive travel and dehydration could predispose someone to such a blood clot, Valadka said.
“These dural venous sinus thromboses, they can happen spontaneously on their own without any trauma, without any blow to the head,” Valadka said. “Is it just a coincidence?”
But a blow to the back of the head could have damaged the vein, causing the clot, he added.
Dr. Jack Ansell of the New York University School of Medicine agreed.
“This condition is certainly not common but it’s not rare, either, and certain patients are prone to it,” Ansell said. “They include those who have head trauma, as she did, and people who have other underlying tendencies to have blood clots. It’s a serious problem but it is certainly one that is eminently treatable. I would expect her get better.”

Hillary and Barak have the blood of Ambassador Stevens, the computer engineer and the two seals on their hands. They can wash their hands as often as they wish but the blood stains will never go away. If their personal characters happen to include guilt or compassion (I have my doubts) I would hope this haunts them at least until the truth comes out if not until their end of days. May God forgive them for hanging those 4 men out to die over 7 hours as Obama calmly went back to bed as Chris Stevens was beaten and sodomized over and over until he died. Disgusting.
I do worry about her health. She is the only person who could take down Obama over this. If push comes to shove, Obama has the Chicago campaign organization supporting him and they will do whatever is necessary to protect their man. I hope Hillary at least has Libyan guards to protect her.

Well of course she's going to recover. She has no brain in her head for the clot to affect. If she did have a brain, clot or no clot, she would know that she needs to come clean on #Benghazigate and all the other underhanded deals she's been involved in...either personally or had knowledge of.

For the record -- my wife of 41 years was diagnosed with a very similar blood colt late on a Saturday afternoon 3 years ago. Less than 16 hours later she was dead. But then no doubt some of you hate monger teatards would celebrate Hillary's death -- like the good "Christians" you claim to be. May ALL of you rot in hell!!!
I am very sorry for your loss. Much of the criticism is directed at the actions taken or not taken by political leaders. My complaints are along those lines. I don't wish Hillary dead. I feel she has been forced to mislead the country by our president. No name calling - I would like to see (when she has her health back) her testify about her lack of action on Benghazi which she was responsible for. She was the SOS and everyone ran their decisions through her and like any chain of command she ran her decisions through POTUS, the Commander in Chief of all our military. He is ultimately responsible for what happened there, right or wrong.
Obama has been working to reduce our military. It is at it's lowest point of men in uniform since before WWI. That is alarming to any American who understands there are terrorist cells throughout our conuntry just waiting for the word "go" to attack everywhere in public places. These terrorists are evil and believe we should all be killed. Perhaps all the liberals have forgotten the beheadings they provided film footage of to let us know that is how the deal with non Muslims. How can people have forgotten that is the mindset we are dealing with.
When George Bush said shortly after 9-11 that this war against jihad would not be a quick war. it could easily take 10-15-20 years or more. President Kennedy in his innaguaral speech on January 20, 1961 said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". How quickly we have turned from that and become what can my country do for me and give me for free so I don't have to work or be responsible for anything in life.
That is not what my President John Fitgerald Kennedy had in mind when I heard his speech when I was 12 years old. I have never forgotten. I have done my best to be a contributing member of society and I have succeeded. I've lived in my car broke at one point. i never asked for handouts but worked 3 jobs to get back on my feet. I just couldn't take government money because people needed it. Then I would see people paying with food stamps driving a brand new Cadillac. I couldn't afford a new car but my tax dollars provided the way for them to use the system and get a new car. Unbelievable. So many losers just taking what ever they can get for free with no intention of ever contributing to our society and culture. This angers me.
I don't look for death for people I don't like. I saw enough of death in 2 1/2 years in Vietnam. It had ugly, horrific and leave guilt riddled survivors.

As our country progresses, the sickos numbers are dwindling, and they really don't like it. A majority is usually 2/3. In the general election is whoever gets more then 50%. Obama had less than 2 million more votes than Romney. That means that 48% of the country does not want Obama.
