Subscribe to RSSThe Secretary of State has been undergoing treatment for a blood clot just below her ear that was reportedly caused by the concussion she suffered in mid-December. She is expected to make a complete recovery. NBC News chief science correspondent Robert Bazell reports.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton remained hospitalized Tuesday for a blood clot in her head, but her doctors say she has no brain damage and is expected to recover completely.
Clinton, who fainted and suffered a concussion earlier this month, is being treated with blood thinners to help shrink the clot, which is in one of the veins between the brain and her skull.
"In the course of a routine follow-up MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed,” Dr. Lisa Bardack of Mt. Kisco Medical Group in New York and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said in a joint statement.
“This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the secretary with blood thinners. She will be released once the medication dose has been established.”
Sec. of State Hillary Clinton was supposed to return to work later this week until doctors discovered a blood clot had formed in a vein between her brain and skull. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
The statement helps answer questions about Clinton’s condition, outside experts said. “This is different than a lot of assumptions that people made, which is that it was a deep vein thrombosis in her leg,” said Dr. Alex Valadka, a spokesman for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and a practicing neurologist in Austin, Texas.
The statement from Clinton’s doctors suggested she would recover fully.
“In all other aspects of her recovery, the Secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff,” they said.
Valadka said such a clot can be very dangerous.
“This could potentially be very serious because so much blood goes through your brain,” Valadka told NBC news. “If you block one of the major draining pathways, you can get a stroke.”
Valadka said standard treatment would be to infuse a bloodthinner such as heparin right away, and to then put a patient onto blood thinner pills for a fews weeks or months.
“The interesting question is how is this related to her concussion, if at all?” Valadka asked.
Clinton, 65, is known for hitting the road hard and she’s logged close to a million miles in travel, having visited 112 countries while in office. She had planned to step down in 2013 and was widely considered a potential front-runner for the Democratic nomination for president, if she chose to run again in 2016.
The extensive travel and dehydration could predispose someone to such a blood clot, Valadka said.
“These dural venous sinus thromboses, they can happen spontaneously on their own without any trauma, without any blow to the head,” Valadka said. “Is it just a coincidence?”
But a blow to the back of the head could have damaged the vein, causing the clot, he added.
Dr. Jack Ansell of the New York University School of Medicine agreed.
“This condition is certainly not common but it’s not rare, either, and certain patients are prone to it,” Ansell said. “They include those who have head trauma, as she did, and people who have other underlying tendencies to have blood clots. It’s a serious problem but it is certainly one that is eminently treatable. I would expect her get better.”

I sincerely hope she never runs for President. She is getting old. She has my respect for the job she has done in the past and how she has handled a lot of things, even though I disagreed at times. I doubt that she will run now due to her health and age. This is my opinion.

Confession time: When Hillary was trying to get the Democratic nomination for 2008 I was really against it. I had a feeling that she felt she "deserved" it; that it was her time. I'm sure that the line of presidential succession going from a Bush to a Clinton to a Bush then back to a Clinton creeped me out a bit. I was thinking: "We're Americans! Not a sub-set of royal families!" I was happy that Obama got the nomination, and even happier that he was elected President.
Although I still support President Obama as much if not more than ever, my opinion of Hillary Clinton has greatly improved. I have seen her work hard for America. It was good for Obama to put her as Secretary of State, and her contributions to the administration and country are commendable. Over the last four years I have thought time and again that many foreign diplomats have probably just caved to her rather than face her wrath (Oh no! Here comes Hillary! Just give her what she wants and she'll go away!).
Although she was once running against Obama, both she and Obama put aside their differences for the good of the country -- and it worked. There's a lesson for all of us in this (Democrats and Republicans).
I wish her a speedy recovery. I hope she can rest and rejuvinate. And if she is deemed healthy and decides to run for President in 2016, I would probably vote for her.

I have suffered a concussion my self and all I got was observation.
Do you follow sports? If an athlete injures a knee, ankle or some other joint, the press talks about the MRI that was done, but you don't hear about MRI's with concussions.

I started having deep vein blood clots in my early 20s, though thankfully none were in my head. Just the thought of that scares the hell out of me. For those of you who lack the simple humanity that would enable you to empathize with Secretary Clinton during her time of trouble, well,,you may as well resign from the human race. You aren't needed. You are a large part of the problem.
But then again...why should anyone expect anything different from a group of people use their religion for political purposes and then don't honor their elected leaders even when their religion tells them that nobody holds office except by the authority of God? It's such a shame that the Republican party's supporters are such clowns. The Republican Party used to be a viable party for national office - what the hell happened to them? My suspicion is that they smelled blood in 2010 when the Tea Partiers were foisted upon this country, and the crazies took over the party leadership. What is so obvious now is that it they don't go back toward the center, we are looking at the end of them. They may do OK in some states locally, but nationally there is no one on the horizon. I saw a poll yesterday that the favorite to run in 16 right now is Paul Ryan. God, I hope that is true - because the democrats have several potential candidates that I feel could wipe the floor with that douche. They had better get on the stick and get back to where they were before they got power-hungry.
By the way, since a recent spate of concussions with serious consequences, doctors no longer take any chances and do MRIs to make sure there is no further damage well after the concussion occurs. Anytime blood flow is interrupted there is a danger of clotting. Thank god they took good care of her - she has been an outstanding SOS and will probably be the first woman president, though of course lots can happen in four years. Anyone who cannot simply wish her a speedy and full recovery is just an animal. Same goes for Bush. I see much more Hilary bashing and ill wishes than I have seen with Bush - but that is normal as it seems like right-wingers have lost their minds with hate and jealousy because they lost the big one AGAIN to the person they hate the most. Sour grapes.

My ex was gardening knocked over a cedar post, hit her in the head, had a concussion. Developed epilepsy with some pretty good seizures.......started going to work, walked in her office rubber mat rolled up on floor, tripped, hit her head on desk, concussion, this time few weeks later, blood clots......hospital for several weeks, and now and then she has major problems.......that's the way it works.....No one wants a concussion, no one wants blood clots that could kill you instantly........NO ONE! Has to be checked all the time since.....has problems because of them.....No One wants to have them.

This is an extremely SERIOUS condition, which may have many diagnoses put to it--how can they get rid of a blood clot between the brain and skull. I am imagining brain surgery to remove it; it is in a very delicate area. Has she had loss of some mental functions?. Could it have been an Aneurysm--
Most likely she will be at home with round the clock Doctors. I do not see how this would be getting better. Maybe to keep the Public's hopes high for a complete recovery---it is bad.

the absence of her prior to her hospital stay is troubling, I think the fainting spell 3 weeks ago was caused by the blood clot and they blamed on the flu and I think she suffered a mini stroke and was rushed to the hospital after her aides found her talking without making sense..
A routine MRI is laughable, people at her age try and stay away from radiation as much as possible to avoid overexposure to radiation. I shake my head listening to the media trying to make excuses about her concussion and rest, if anybody watches the nfl know about how tests and recoup time is and these guys are physically bumping there heads and getting knocked out and come back to smash into each other again in a few days and 2 weeks, so for her to be told to lay down and not move for over 3 weeks and then gets rushed to hospital and then information blackout for 36 hours is troubling. if it was a NO BIG DEAL then it would have been explained away sooner..

Anytime, a person has a blood clot it is always serious--Hillary is being watched very carefully, because if she did indeed have a mini-stroke when falling, the blood clot in her head indicates a bigger one problem is about to happen.
Knowing many stroke victims, they ignore the symptoms, then it is too late. The damage is done--there is a new medication out there being used by doctors, for stroke victims to take within 3 hrs. It reduces, or completely eradicates the debilitating permanent side effects of a serious stroke.
The other possibility is a future aneurysm---preventive medicine--hope we do not lose it when Obamacare goes into effect. Each symptom of a medical problem should be taken seriously.
Get well Hillary---What a hard, committed worker you have been as Secretary of State--a dedicated woman to the future of our country.

What is really appalling is: Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, 3 other Americans DEAD!Let us never forget The 4 murdered American hero's in Benghazi. But most of you have already forgotten along with Hilary Clinton and the President.
The more I read about this blood clot the more I think that she has had a stroke or at the very least a sub dural hematoma. There is no such thing as a "routine" MRI. I wish her well, even though I have never liked her much, but this is how my mother's strokes started. It will only get worse.
I wish her well, and that she recovers from this. She has always given her all, whether or not you agree with her. And many times I haven't. But she has my respect, and my hopes for a full recovery.

If there was a actual lack of funding, why did the State Dept. send to the embassy in Vienna a fleet of Chevy Volts and then on May 7, 2012 send the charging stations that cost $108,000? On May 3, 2012 extra security was being requested at the Benghazi consulate and denied, despite 230 security incidents in Libya, 48 which were in Benghazi and two at the diplomatic compound. I guess keeping GM alive by buying Volts and pretending Al queda was on the run was more important to the Obama administrations campaign than the lives of four Americans.

the load of hateful and ignorant crap ppl are saying is disgusting. ask a neurologist what a stroke work up is. ct of the head w/o contrast to r/o hemorrhage. mri of the brain to r/o soft tissue damage. cta or mra w/o contrast to check vasculation and clot formation. syncopal episodes fall into the catagory of tia (transient ischemic attacks) and get such a work up. standard treatment is weight based heparin therapy, such as lovenox to bridge until patient is therapuetic on oral anticoagulants. clot busters are avoided, because of the risk of hemorrhage conversion.

How come nobody ever says anything about the thousands killed in Iraq and the international arrest warrants that are out for Bush and Cheney for torture and the sudden disappearance of hundreds of people there? Benghazi was a tragedy, should have had better protection. But Iraq and war crimes are a totally different deal. If they catch them and send them to the Hague, they will probably be hanged. Just like Saddam Hussein. Nice guys we had working for us. Hillary Clinton has worked so hard for this country; I didn't really like her at first but over the years she has emerged one of the strongest women on the planet. I admire and respect her very much. what the public was able to piece together was that for a suicide there was very little blood evidence of a traumatic head wound at the site of the body!
Actually, Steve, the ME was the Medical Examiner for the Northern Region of Virginia (which is under the Va. Dept. of Health) and evidence was examined by the then Va Div. of Forensic Science, Northern Region, if I remember right. And the Va. lab was one of the top state Forensic labs at that time.

I wish her a speedy recovery. Blood clots can be serious. Richard Nixon had one in his leg during his time in office and spent a few days in the hospital taking blood thinners to get rid of it. Although I disagree with just about everything Clinton, I can't help but think this is not faked. I was raised that you may not get along with your neighbor but if he is down and out, you kindly help him back on his feet. You don't kick him in the teeth when he is down.

NBC reporter David Bloom died of a pulmonary embolism in Iraq in 2010. It was believed he developed it from flying and the inactivity of long flights. It is not uncommon. Hillary has been kept out of town, flying around the world since 9-11. This is most likely a result of her activities the last three months in the flying.
Glad she is returning to good health. I wouldn't wish bad on her. I do look forward to her being able to finally tesitify concerning Benghazi. Hold on to your hat Mr. President. On second thought, you should not have gone back to bed the night of 9-11-12. I guess watching 4 Americans getting killed over the course of 7 hours just wasn't as exciting as watching Osama Bin Laden getting bumped off.

Hillary deserves all our support, prayers and blessings as we enter the New Year. She has evolved into one of the most capable, responsible and important stateswomen of modern times. Many of us, myself included, would like to see her take over in 2016 where President Obama leaves off. Hopefully, she will fully recover, decide to run for President again, and become our first woman President. She earned it through her service to our country for all these years, especially as Secretary of State. Her latest setback demonstrates just how strenuous and stressful the position of Secretary of State really is. We all wish her a speedy, complete recovery with a little period of rest to get prepared for the next stage in her extarordinary career.

I hope she gets better treatment then my Dad did. My Dad had a similar clot back in March and was treated at one of the major Hospitals in Gainesville, Fl. He went in talking and being able to move all body parts. After surgery he never spoke nor even made a sound or movement for his remaining time with us. We were told by his doctors that they expected a full recovery but in their documents after being moved to another hospital they said the opposite. My Dad should have never been moved in his present condition. His Pastor even said he should not be moved but I guess the hospital didn't want to be held accountable for all the false hope they gave us. He passed away after 2 months of neglect that led to a large bed sore on his bottom and e-coli in his traec. Thing is no lawyer wants to take the case against the hospitals. I suppose if we had money like some folks we would get the very best of treatment and doctors also. I pray for her complete recovery and hope that her doctors don't do the same thing my Dad's did. I also hope someone will eventually take my Mom's case so we can ensure this never happens to anyone else.
