It is not uncommon for clots to develop after the conditions Secretary Clinton has dealt with. Dehydration and a head injury, especially if one is inactive, can lead to a clot developing. Since Secretary Clinton is usually very active, enforced inactivity to recover from the concussion probably contributed to clot formation too. It happens more than people think. My spouse, a very active and healthy person but one who could end up sitting for long periods of time on the job- connected to the phone and computer- developed a blood clot that resulted in a pulmonary embolism (blood clot hitting the lungs). It was fortunate that it was to the lungs and not the heart or brain, as those frequently result in death. As it happened, my spouse recovered without serious aftereffects and certainly Hillary Clinton will too. But it is serious and people need to respect that she needs time to recover. Suggestions that she would "fake" illness to avoid testifying are preposterous. You don't fake blood clots and being on blood thinners. It certainly isn't something to mess around with. But having had such health occurrences certainly does not disqualify her from further political office. After all, we have had disabled presidents, presidential candidates who have had serious medical conditions and many in other offices who have served with much more serious health issues. I hope Secretary Clinton recovers soon.

This is not the first time that an individual has pled "illness" in order not to testify in a trial. One of this doctors staff members is a friend of a friend of a lady who works at NYPH. This lady confirmed that yes, Hillary Clinton is indeed being treated at NYPH for DVT.

Entitled2, it may come as news to you, since you are obviously not exactly a medical wizard, that anti-coagulants are the first line of defense against clots; both to try to dissolve the existing clot and to be sure that additional clots do not form. Surgical intervention may be necessary if the anti-coagulants do not work. NY Presbyterian is among the top 4 brain trauma treatment hospitals in the country; it is unlikely the doctors there would risk its reputation by "faking" a diagnosis.

she had three things in a row that all were tied togeather causally. In the exact way that medically trained people SEE these things tied togeather ALL OF THE TIME

stomach flu (diarrhea) makes you dehydrated...many people faint...if you faint you can get an concussion...and bed rest from resting after concussion can lead to DVT l...clot in legs. (so can sitting still for hours on an airplane).

It is not at all suspicious. Usually when someone comes to the hospital with a clot we ask them if they had been sitting or immobile or on bed rest prior. And when someone faints and hits head and resulting concussion we try to figure out why they fell...she fell for a VERY common (most common) reason called orthostatic hyptension that people OFTEN get if they get dehydrated. People with stomach flu are at RISK to get dehydrated.

If anything what happened to Hillary is TEXTBOOK and good for people to understand. It's a perfect example of how these things happen to people. Good warning to everyone to be sure if you have a stomach bug to take in enough fluids and to go to Dr or Hospital if you can't keep it down or in you.

UH it was the Bush administration that did not want her around. All political appointees such as her submit resignations at the end of a presidential term or they are terminated. She was treated no differently than any other. The Bush administration could have chosen to rehire her, they did not.

As far as her employment during the Clinton administration she was transferred to the Pentagon in 1994 with a $20,000 increase in salary. If that is discrimination then I hope to be discriminated against at least once a week, I can use the income.

These things do go together, but if she does have a DVT, she should be getting more than just anti-coagulants. She should be undergoing a procedure to place an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter up through her femoral vein. Anything less would be substandard care, because the anti-coagulants could cause pieces of a DVT clot to break free and travel to her lungs in an unpredictable way causing her death. Given how serious this would be, it is surprising there is no story about daughter Chelsea rushing to visit her sick mom. Unless Chelsea is pregnant, it seems odd that she has not been visiting her mother during the holidays -- especially when her mother is sick. Chelsea has to know her parents very well, and if she is staying away, it could she doesn't want to get could up in this. To me, it is these things not in the story that make me wonder what is really going on.

John-1639742 - I don't know where all that came from with the IVC filter in the femoral vein. There is a 10 day window from the time the DVT formed to the time a filter would be useful, assuming you are referring to a greenfield filter or the like. By the 10th day the clot starts to cord making it less likely to emoblize to the lungs. Also by that time the veins recanalize allowing blood flow to move around the main deep veins. Putting filters in are a last resort as is a catheter directed thrombolosis. If I had to "guess", I would say they wanted her on a round of heparin or they are giving her the Lovenox/Enoxaporine injections (standard 10 days, two shots daily) while they get her INR under control with the Coumadin/Warfarin. DVT's and/or PE's are commonly missed and mistaken for a flu or pneumonia, along with mere calf muscle pulls. They shouldn't be, however they are. Depending on how long it took for them to find the clot, if the clot propogated, where the clot was located, it may be too late for a filter to be of more good than harm. Permanent filters have been known to embolize, I don't even know the stats for the temporary ones as they are fairly new in the last decade. Some people recover from DVT's/PE's and never had another issue from it, others have to live their lives with many more problems stemming from them. It's no short ride for most and they would need to do a lot of blood tests to rule out any of the auto-immune disorders that are often the underlying cause. News correspondent David Bloom died from a DVT going untreated with anti-coagulants, that was such a tragedy due to the lack of information out there that his wife, Melanie, was able to have the boys on the hill dedicate the month of March as DVT awareness month.

I was brought up being told if you have nothing nice to say - say nothing at all. I can't for the life of me fathom that so many people were brought up to wish such harsh fates as death on anyone. All I can say is educate yourself on the issue prior to tossing conspiracy theories out there, it may just save your life. Again, my prayers are with her & her family.

I was responding to Laurali who brought up the DVT. How do you think they get the IVC filter in place? They start in the femoral vein and they thread the filter up until expanding it into the inferior vena cava. If Hillary has that type of clot, she would need one of the many available IVC filters. I was responding to Laurali who brought up the DVT. How do you think they get the IVC filter in place? They start in the femoral vein and they thread the filter up until expanding it into the inferior vena cava. If Hillary has that type of clot, she would need one of the many available IVC filters. I have heard nothing about such treatment for Hillary, or why this would not be done for her.

A filter isn't always necessary, most interventional radiologists and/or vascular surgeons try to avoid having to utilize a filter. The reports as to how she wound up with a clot, what type of clot, how it was found after being seen for other issues are so vague there's a lot to factor there. If she was misdiagnosed with the flu from the get go, for instance, it could have been a DVT that embolized into the lungs causing her illness. Sadly far too many times this same misdiagnose happens. If she had been dealing with a DVT for over 10 days, the emergent fix (such as a filter) is no longer needed as the clot "cords" (hardens and becomes one with the vein) and the chances of embolism after cording is minimal at best. The deep veins are like a highway, once the area is closed off (clotted) a detour begins (these veins recanalize into valveless veins to bypass the major veins).

I was afflicted with a DVT after a surgery and the symptoms and calls to the surgeon were pretty much dismissed. I had to go through so much because the "10 day window of opportunity" to go in and blast the clot was running out fast. What started out as a clot behind the knee propogated (grew) and took over my entire leg. Even with the injections and coumadin in place it continued to grow leaving the vascular team to suggest a catheter directed thrombolysis. The leg was so clotted they couldn't go in through the femoral or the foot (the two places they prefer) with the catheter, instead they had to go in through the jugular. There is so much that can potentially happen with DVT(s) and/or PE(s) there just isn't enough information available to presume what the standard of care should be. In other cases, it can be treated simply with heparin, or a combination of the lmwh (low molecular weight heparin) injections and the coumadin/warfarin (anti-coagulant pills), however the need for monitoring in any of those cases is very important.

I'm not picking on your statement and I certainly hope you don't think I was. I just wish there was a lot more information readily available to people, especially those in the health care industry because they are preventable yet they claim far too many lives. There are just far too many variables in how to go about treating clots starting with the type and location of the clot. With the extent of damage my DVTs (now plural) caused they still choose not to utilize a filter and after the reasoning being explained, I choose to opt for no filter at this time as well. I hope that helps you understand the reason she may not be getting such treatment. A great wealth of information is available for everyone at PreventDVT.org and I personally recommend that site to everyone.

It may see awfully convenient that she becomes incapacitated just prior to having to offer testimony, but that doesn't mean it can't be real. It happened to me once, where I became very ill two days before having to testify in court. I didn't want to put it off, but my attorney said he would not put me on the stand in my condition and insisted I see a doctor. Turned out that I had a very serious infection and it took two weeks to recover, though by that time the court date had to be pushed out 6 months. The other party was furious, but there was nothing anyone could do about it. Mrs. Clinton may or may not be medically incapacitated, but the timing is not proof that this is merely an excuse.

If she had a blood clot directly formed from the concussion/fall, they would not be treating it with blood thinners, which could cause more bleeding. If it is a DVT or a clot caused stroke, then blood thinners are appropriate. They certainly haven't given much information out, and neither she or her family has made any statements, which really concerns me regarding the seriousness of this......it might be more than they are letting on.

I had one 2 nights after a thyroid removal surgery last year and it traveled into my lungs waling me up in the middle of the night in horrible pain when I tried ot breathe. Because I have 2 kids at home and nobody else was with me, I waited until he got home the next morning before I got any medical attention. The clot once it starts moving is called and embolism and moves thorugh your bloodstream and I ended up in the E/R abnd from the E/R I was admitted to the hsp with clots in my lungs.
A 1 night surgery turned into a 3 1/2 day hsp stay as this thing could have killed me last January had it not been treated as the doctor said had it gone to my heart or brain, stroke or death. Apparently some of you know nothing about concussions if you think she is faking this. I work with a lot of teenaged athletes who have had concussions. The newest protocol is for TOTAL brain rest -- no TV, no IPOD, no computer, etc. until head aches are gone then they can slowly return to reading, if that goes okay they progress from there. I've seen kids have head aches for a month after their concussion. So I don't find it odd at all that Hilary hasn't made an appearance for 3 weeks. If they aren't improving then the next step is usually an MRI which is probably what they did for her and then found the blood clot. Do a search for concussion treatment or protocol and you can read all this for yourself.

A person who travels extensively and is exposed to thousands of people will certainly catch some virus bugs from time to time. Dehydration is certainly not uncommon for people who have suffered the stomach virus and dehydration can certainly lead to one passing out. That does not mean Secretary Clinton can't return to full health nor does it mean she can't have another political career. She is far from the only person to come back from medical issues.

We've got weird fantasy folks put into positions of making big decisions and their beliefs are not based on facts so they are making decisions this way that will detrimentally impact thousands of blindly led constituents! There are real consequences for voters who vote against their best interests!

I would add to that... in our society, and those who stand their posts must know honestly how to work that post or the society falls. How can ethnocentric uneducated bubble-heads be diplomats? How can those who never went to college or law school, don't know history or ethics, be law makers? It just does not work and will not, especially with continued embarrassments occurring in management, policy, and obstruction to progress in the approaching year, 2013! If the American People are not going to survive on Main Street, enough is enough!

It has only been because of the educated leaders we have had who actually know how, why, and what they are doing in their posts, that we are still surviving. Hillary Clinton has given her best, and she has a long list of accomplishments, publications, interviews, speeches and successful changes due to her hard work, determination, and positive insights. Because of her service on behalf of The People, she deserves the best and our respect in return whatever her destiny, future choice of career or lifestyle may be. It is also an indisputable fact that she has a worldwide village of friends who admire and appreciate her far and wide, silently putting forth good wishes for her recovery tonight.

The left is just as ruthless in their attacks and witch hunts. Do you honestly believe you're innocent of the continuous insolence? There are just as many Democrats that would cheat, lie, and sell their mother and children for power, fame and fortune. Neither party has the right to throw the first stone because the have no fault. If you honestly want to see this country heal, both parties need to learn to forgive and be good examples for our children and grandchildren. Rather, elect candidates that demonstrate abilities to manage and lead with "compassion for all". We haven't taught that in our schools or homes for several generations. We rarely even try. We have taught our children condescension, distrust and how to kill. Our colleges teach reward for confronting the opposition at their weak points rather than teaching students to help the opposition to repair and strengthen their weak points. A healthy bottom line at all cost seems to be the only mantra. That's why we falter and fail today. When we teach and reward our children (both at home and in the classroom) for creating and maintaining healthy relationships we will then be able to teach our children how to grow a healthy nation and share it with others. I think we have lost our way, don't you?
