FDA warns about US-made chicken jerky pet treats

A Colorado company is refusing to recall chicken jerky dog treats potentially contaminated with salmonella bacteria, prompting federal health regulators to urge consumers to keep them away from pets.

The Food and Drug Administration warned pet owners Thursday not to feed dogs certain Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats packaged and distributed by Kasel Associated Industries of Denver.

The warning is not related to the ongoing investigation of reported illnesses and deaths in pets that consumed chicken jerky treats made in China.

Kasel officials previously recalled additional lots of Nature’s Deli chicken jerky treats, Boots & Barkley Roasted American Pig Ears and Boots & Barkley American Variety Pack Dog Treats, and Boots & Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks -- bull penis treats -- after they tested positive for salmonella that could cause illness.

But FDA officials said firm officials “declined” to conduct a voluntary recall of the newly implicated treats.

The products in question are Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats sold in 3-pound packages with a lot code of BESTBY061913DEN. A retail sample of the treats tested positive for salmonella in November, Colorado Department of Agriculture exams showed.

The products are sold at Costco, which has pulled them from store shelves and is working to notify customers who bought them, an FDA spokeswoman said.

No reports of illness have been linked to the treats, the FDA said.

People and animals could contract salmonella either by handling or eating the contaminated products.

Infection with salmonella bacteria typically causes short-term illness in healthy people, but can cause serious complications in those with weak immune systems.

I wonder if Chinese agents planted contaminated treats, and their lobbyists sounded the alarm? Yup, I don't trust China.

I saw these at Costco but will not buy any chicken treats for my dogs (or cats) since I first saw recalls about Chicken Jerky (strips) a long time ago.

I also check all the packages of rawhide treats, most made from South American beef, almost NONE from USA. Don't be fooled by a company that proudly displays USA on its package! Rawhide is not from here! Sometimes the print is so small, but keep looking on packages, it must be printed on them.

They are very hard to find. PetSmart, my main store to shop at carries absolutely none made in the USA!

The FDA does have a website you sign up for "alerts" for pets & people. Very helpful! You can also look at previous recalls, helps to know what companies to stay away from.

As soon as I posted my comments about this story, I received an e-mail from www.dogfoodadvisor.com This is another good source and they are always on top of the stories. Does anyone know if there any sites for cat food recalls?

This is why I DO NOT buy any treats of any kind for my dog. I found that the most perfect treats are a few small pieces of carrots or green beans. I had a dachshund many years ago and when we gave him pig ears, he developed a nasty intestinal bug and I never bought them again after that.

I also feed my dog minimal ingredient dog food...LOOK at the contents of your dog food people! If there is "by-products" of any kind, then it's NO GOOD! If there is gluten in it, then it's NO GOOD! If you can't read the ingredients or pronounce the words, then chances are it's garbage. Dogs should be eating REAL protein, veggies and whole grains without all the garbage mixed in.

First, I do not and have not for many, many years required my dogs to eat anything I would not willingly eat. If you call the manufacturers of the "Made in the USA" labeled treats/food/whatever, they will proudly tell you their products are 100% USA made.

What they will not willingly divulge until you become tiresomely demanding and threaten to call the FDA is that "some of the ingredients are not available in the US, so they are outsourced from Asia".

Despite hype to the contrary, it is easy, and not all that more expensive, to feed your dog a decent diet and never have a can or bag of dog food in your home. I routinely cook mine a meat (real meat, not byproduct crap), wild rice, and vegetable (usually, peas, carrots, often dried beans, some small cubes of potato, pumpkin or sweet potato or both) once or twice a week, divide it into meal-sized portions, and freeze it. At mealtime, I drop each one a portion into a Correlle bowl, reheat it in the microwave, and they scarf it down.

Considering my three have not needed a vet visit for anything other than routine exams and immunizations in more than ten years, I'd say I came out far on the positive side in both terms of money and stress.

Aside from that.....why the hell would you feed something you love a penis from anything? Yeah, yeah, organ meat, yada yada, yada. Mine prefer fresh steamed carrots, thanks, and for a REAL treat, fresh steamed asparagus.

My dog loves the, uh, penis bits.

I do the same -- I pressure cook chicken/turkey (no skins!) and cook wild rice and cook frozen/fresh (not canned) vegetables.

I am now making treats for my dog as well.

I won't eat "processed" food (i.e., canned, frozen dinners, etc.) and won't feed my dog what I would not eat myself.

I was being specific about a certain company that says USA on it for rawhide treats because they are NOT from the USA. I did not mean all the companies. Again, read the country of origin. I also do NOT make a habit of buying them, maybe once or twice a year.

I have had many animals through my life, 21yrs was my oldest cat, only was at the vet once in her life (to be spayed) until she was 20 and had thyroid problems. My oldest dog was 14 and really had no major problems.

I now have 2 dogs, 7 & 8yrs old and found what works well for them. I have 10 cats, 8 that are from ages 10,11,12 &14yrs old. Quite healthy except for one with thyroid problems. Both dogs are 90lbs (good weight for their breed), so you may see my point about "cost" being a bit high to cook for them. Most people I know that feed their pets "home made" have small dogs and many feel they can feed them what they cook for themselves that night for dinner.

My point being with this is while it is great if you can make your own food and purchase everything fresh, not everyone can do that. I purchase the best I can, cannot afford top of the line but certainly will not purchase the cheapest either.

Mine do quite well, as many others on a commercial diet. They may even have an added benefit of the vitamins & minerals they all need. Both dogs and most of my cats will eat veggies (steamed) and fruit too. To me, this is the best of both and as I stated before, they are all quite healthy and happy.

This is why I only feed my pets all natural products. When I eat Fluffy and Fido, I don't want their meat to be contaminated. I'm very health concious.

Zippy, I was not slamming you, but rather simply stating my own feelings. As for most doing this with small dogs, you are quite correct. However, I followed the same patterns with my Saint Bernards as well. You have to be penny conscious and fully committed, but it's possible. Not easy, but possible.

Again, if you felt that I was implying that you don't love your furbabies, or don't love them as much as I love mine.....that was never my intent, and I am sorry.

Darn it, Now I have to find another snack <B><I>I can eat</B></I>. I was just getting the hang of chewing that cardboard too!
I rasie my own cattle and once a year I butcher one for the freezer. When I make Beef Jerky from my own grown meat, I always cook up several pieces 3-4 pounds with no seasoning for my little fuzzy buddy. He doesn't get them everyday, it is a TREAT and he gets them once in a while maybe once a week if he is lucky. He is 13 years old and thanks he is a PEOPLE, hell he is a PEOPLE he just has fur on!
