354 cases in fungal meningitis outbreak; 25 deaths

Fungal meningitis and other infections linked to contaminated injection drugs continued to rise Monday, with 354 cases in 19 states, with Rhode Island reporting its first case. Deaths held steady at 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

Cases of fungal meningitis, stroke presumed to be caused by the infection or other central-nervous system infections climbed to 347. Another seven infections have been reported in people who received mold-tainted injections in joins such as the hip, knee, elbow or shoulder.

The contaminated drugs were produced by the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., which has recalled all of its products and been stripped of its pharmacy license.

Food and Drug Administration officials released new documents last week showing that company officials documented mold and bacteria at several sites in the company’s clean rooms dating from January through September.  Massachusetts health officials also documented contamination and problems with the steam sterilization equipment known as an autoclave. In addition, NECC was dispensing vast quantities of sterile drugs without having the individual patient prescriptions required for compounding pharmacies.

Massachusetts, a great Romney success story. He removed all regulation that made it possible for these modern day "medicine Man" shops to operate with little to no oversight!!! Wow, what a great business creator. If he is elected president, maybe he can do the same thing for America. Who needs the FDA and all these other wasted government bureaus. Waste of tax payor money. If I want to open my own "same-day surgery and burger shop", how dare the government tell me I can't!!!!

The FDA dropped the ball because of the confusion surrounding SCOTUS decision in 2002. They quite honestly had no idea what their authority was, so they kept their hands off. But the state dropped the ball for its own inspections, even while the NECC was issued an FDA warning letter in 2006. The FDA issued a warning letter not over ops, but because the NECC was issuing medicine for treatments that were not FDA approved, an area that wasn't under confusion. So despite full knoweldge that something was afoot, the state didn't do its own audit of the facility or anything. That fell squarely under Romney's watch. He was too busy getting ready to run for president in 2008 to do anything about it.

Simply INJECT the nefarious band of "chemists" who own these "Pharmacies" with their own "brew."

Those in the FDA and any state agencies involved with this atrocity should not only lose their jobs but they should be prosecuted along with these filthy scum who own and operate these "businesses."

Waldo: You are too logical. Such Logic is not allowed. Reminds me of the Katrina levee breaks in N.O. I believe the Romans would say the US corp of Engineers and their contracts would be allowed to get rich from building the levees but they would have to house their own families in the deepest part of the hole the levee was protecting. That will assure the levee gets built right. Telling doctors, pharmco Execs and hospital execs that as they conduct their business so it shall be done to them if they kill people through negligence. You'd be surprised how we would have the best medical care in the world with no additional expense.

Looks like they are killing more Americans than ever now heh heh. Between this and all the food poisoning, experimental drugs with little FDA and USDA oversight, both being cut back because of budget restraints, it's a sad shame Americans are allowing them to get away with all this LOL. Oh well, keep voting in the democrats and republicans, very soon there won't be any low income Americans for them to poison heh heh.

IT's not the budget cuts that are responsible. The US spends more than anybody on protections. But the corporate controlled congress gives immunity and protections to corporate interests who hurt/kill people. Have you forgotten already the BP oil spill and the bogus application they filed with the gubmint ? The inspectors - paid by the taxpayers - were writing up the dnagers and risks for this compounding pharmacy for years. Reportedly, they had no authority to close 'em down. Congress took that authority away when they closed bad places and the Owners, the chambers of commerce, and the industry associations cried about it's too hard to do business in America. So we pay the gubmint employees but their authority is nuetered by congress. When our Congressmen are not telling women what rape is like, or toe tapping under toilet stalls to attract a boyfriend they are giving passes to business leaders to kill people in the name of profit. That's what your Congress is.

Even progressive States like Massachusetts have a difficult time avoiding business operatives who fail to understand a few extra bucks will never offset the loss of reputation and good name in the long run. In this instance, criminal negligence would seem to have occurred with a product intended for injection into the human body. What mentality overlooks the need for responsible behavior with such a product.

Compounding pharmacies are not issued a permit to manufacture. They are permitted to fill scripts. This pharmacy went rogue years ago and was cited by inspectors many times for improper procedures and violating safety standards. The gubmint clerks were not permitted to shut them down even though they would have liked to. The bidness man that ran it turned medicine into a profit pump and gave not one whit for his patients/customers. Doctors and hospitals know they are only supposed to buy from certified manaufacturers, bu the middle man distributor systems acts as a laundry and washes the ID/origin of the products they sell to the Docs and hospitals. But buying from a non-certified pirate operation may be cheaper than buying from a certified manufacturer so the middle man and maybe the Docs and hospitals can make MORE money if they sell the injections for the high price but purchase the stuff for less by buyingh from a non-certified manufacturer. All of this is known or should have been known by your gubmint. BUT as a wholly owned subsidiary of the business special interests the gubmint over and over and over proves to us all that they also do not care one whit about protecting the people. They are there to assure business makes profits. So they let a non-certified company to stay in business knowing the field inspectors reported over and over that these guys were not operating in compliance with thier license as a pharmacy. Politicians tell the camp guards (paycheck for life gubmint employees) to go ahead and fail to protect the public, but don't worry we'll still pay you, and they do it. They'll do it every time.

why do doctors buy from an intermediate repackaging company (rather than the manufacturer)? are they cheaper?

          Reply#4 - Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:03 PM EDT

Drug companies may not sell the drugs in the form or dosage required. When you need a children's antibiotic, a compounding pharmacy will crush up the pills and add a cherry flavoring. When you need a 75 mg injection of something, but the drug companies only supply 500 mg doses, the compounding pharmacy will dilute it to a safe level. It is supposed to be made for an individual patient based on a doctor's prescription.

The problem with compounding pharmacies is when they make huge batches of drugs like a drug company. They aren't regulated like a drug company but do the same thing. They aren't supposed to make huge batches like that. It's supposed to be for an individual. The NECC made huge batches, leaving the patient ID section blank, in addition to the cleanliness problems they had.

It seems like an appropriate punishment for the culprits here would be to inject them with the same infected drugs as victims.

I find the most shocking aspect of this story to be the fact that despite all the evidence and deaths, there has yet to be a manslaughter charge filed.

I think there is a pretty clear case for criminal negligence at the very least. I just have hope because there is a criminal investigation ongoing.

Meningitis is the new name for Polio. Polio was not wiped out. They simply changed it's name so that Big Pharma and all of it's vaccines and drugs could look victorious. I am guessing that these people actually became infected from a vaccine!

                  Reply#9 - Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:18 PM EDT

Polio is a virus, not a fungus. Meningitis is just a medical jargon term for "brain swelling" which can be caused by many things, including polio, bacteria, and fungus.

These people aren't suffering from polio, because that would require deliberate disease introduction. Mold is everywhere, if you've ever left a loaf of bread out, you know this.

Nicole, your post shows a lot of ignorance. Polio and meningitis are not even similar. Meningitis can be a virus, bacteria, or fungus. Polio is a virus and has completely different symptoms. Since the source of the contamination has been found to be these injections, there clearly is no relationship between the fungal meningitis and vaccines.

How are people who rely on these shots to get by day to day suppose to trust that this won't happen to them? It's been 9 months and I'm due for my RFA shots in my facet joints, these shots are what help me get by day to day instead of relying on narcotics to ease the pain and have to worry about pain receptors becoming sensitive and having to up my dosage every 4 months...this is ridiculous. Negligent homicide is what happened here...and someone has to answer to all these families that lost loved ones.

That this even happened in the US shows what kind of "exceptional" health care you will receive.
