Subscribe to RSSFederal health officials have detected salmonella in bulk raw and roasted peanuts produced by a New Mexico supplier and in an associated nut butter facility, all tied to an outbreak of food poisoning that has sickened nearly three dozen people and sent potentially contaminated products to major retailers across the nation.
Sunland Inc. of Portales, N.M., expanded its ongoing recall to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts sold in quantities ranging from 2 ounces to 50 pounds, including products within current shelf life and those with no expiration date, Food and Drug Administration officials announced Saturday.
As of Oct. 5, the outbreak of salmonella Bredeney linked to the company's peanut products had sickened 35 people in 19 states and sent eight to the hospital. Nearly two thirds of those affected were children younger than 10, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illnesses have been tied to those who ate Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with Sea Salt.
FDA officials previously had detected salmonella in the environment of the plants that make products sold to Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Harry & David and a slew of other processors and retailers across the country. But officials now have found salmonella in the main plant's raw and roasted bulk peanuts and they've also detected the outbreak strain of salmonella Bredeney in the nut butter plant.
Sunland has ceased production and distribution from both its nut butter and peanut processing plants, FDA officials reported.
The raw and roasted peanuts available to retail customers were distributed under the company's own name and sent to numerous large grocery and retail chains.
The number of products associated with the company’s recall has continued to expand over recent weeks, climbing to more than 240. On Monday, Think Thin bars issued a recall of bars link to the peanut recall, according to supermarket chains Giant Food and Stop & Shop. A full list of recalled products can be found here.
Consumers should not eat any products associated with Sunland and should discard them immediately, FDA officials warned. That is especially important for children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, who are most vulnerable to dangerous salmonella infections.

Mike the problem is they can't find Americans willing to work in the fields. Remember when they tried to kick all the illegal workers out of Alabama this past spring and now locals were willing to step up and to the work.

You need to research a little on peanuts. There is no field labor involved in their production. Peanuts are 100% machine harvested.
it is in the plants where they process the peanuts; hygiene is not the main factor, production amount is; their workers are almost total Mexican labor, not used to hygiene, the company's are to blame, safety gets into the way of profits.
and just last week their lawyers were writing me a check until I told them the blood tests showed no signs of Salmonella. Sometimes I am too honest for my own good, had I been a conservative I would have taken them for all theyve got, but I am an honest man and can't see taking money from someone who didn't poison me.
I have had some severe stomach problems since August when I had eaten and entire jar of one of their brands of peanut butter. Not watching TV ever and steering clear of as much corporate propaganda as possible, I was unaware of the recall until Smiths called me and said that someone from my adress had bought some tainted peanut butter. I hurried to the doctor and he said that I could be one of the rare cases where it causes long term severe liver and intestinal problems. The peanut company was so concerned about my case that they had already spoken with their insurance company and lawyers who were making me a financial offer on the phone when I found that all the blood and stool samples came back negative. They seemed in a state of shock that I would turn down money as were my extremely republican neighbors who were already thinking of ways to con me out of some of my illgotten gains, the words stupid and moron crossed their lips more tha once when they found that I turned down the money simply because I had not contracted Salmonella from the peanut butter.
The unfortunate thing is now I have to find the cause of my intestinal distress, it was kind of nice to think I knew what the problem was, my money is on monsanto even though I eat less GMO's than the average person, but since they refuse to label them there is no way of knowing for sure whehter I am consuming them or not.
Yes it was Alabama, after they threw all the migrant workers out a construction company held a job fair and only 3 people showed up, not one qualified to do the job, It seems the Alabamans don't want mexicans in their state but they aren't willing to give up their unemployment and welfare and do the work themselves.
The largest apple grower in washington said he has 2000 workers and is still 400 short which means many of the apples will rot on the trees, not one of his pickers is white. He said he has ads all over the country for anyone willing to work and yet he can't fill the positions. A good picker and make $1000 dollars a week. Americans apply when they hear the wage but he said they usually quit before the first check when they find out to actually earn that much they have to bust their ass for 12 hours a day.

They can't find Americans to work in the fields because they don't have to work, the government pays them to stay home. Take away their food stamps and subsidized housing and utilities and watch how fast they take the jobs. We've create generations of lazy people with entitlements.
The jobs in the fields are hard work - too bad! Stay in school and actually try to learn something while there instead of being a goofball like I was. If you don't have a trade - this is the kind of job you end up with (if you have to work to survive).

I mentioned this before to the Natural Gas Advocates and the name calling started, the irrigation water containing toxic chemicals being sucked up thru the roots, and becoming part of the plants, vegetables, and fruits. With these toxic chemicals becoming concentrated inside the plants, vegetables, and fruits; and all the washing processing in the World would not remove these toxic chemicals.

that sucks! i love peanut butter. and i was one of the unfortunate ones last time the salmonela peanutbutter went around. it was horrible, but only missed one day of work. peanuts are a major part of my diet, a great source for protein and healthy fat. if you're ever hungry between meals, grab a few peanuts and that will hold you over for a good three to four hours.
I make candy from peanut butter during Christmas Season and make a little extra from it since I am retired. But now peanut butter will skyrocket and the price will be so outrageous to make the candy that i won't be able to get the money back. We use to have controls over foodstuffs and things were classified, so what happened?

You know that all the pasteuriztion and added preservatives do not matter, if someone takes a sh!t and does not wash their hands, then touches the equipment filling all the containers after pasteurization. As far as chemicals to prevent or kill bacteria, that would require chemicals almost strong enough to kill us, also many bacteria have mutated to become resistant.
The ONLY Solution is irradiation of all US Food, especially since most US Fruits, Vegetables, etc. come from Mexico, South and Central Americas. As due to Lawsuits to stop the use of irrigation water due to endangered fish species, most of California's Fruit and Vegetable Basket has been shut down.
Also due to previous US Defense Budget Cuts the longterm US Army Corps of Engineer Projects and Programs were never completed like the dredging of US Waterways (floods and droughts of US farmlands), no creation of new water reservoirs, bridge and dam maintenance, etc.. So basically, not enough water for US Farming due to previous US Defense Budget Cuts (that President Obama as Commander In Chief is Ordering again; repeat the same mistakes and expect a different result.).
Another example of corporate greed, do agree that the U.S. over regulates some times, but as long as companies outsource, and nafta, this issue seems to come up, what with some of the products from China that were tainted. Some corporations are so into their almighty profits, expect more of this to happen. Doubt if lowering the tax rate will do any good, they will continue to outsource. Believe that there have been some bills in congress to lower the tax rate for companies if they bring job back to the us....but the far right usally kills them.

Peanut butter is not expensive. It is a very cheap source of nutrition as are eggs.

price of peanut butter went up by 60% a year ago or so and has stayed there. Cheaper than hamburger which has also zoomed in price.
this is what happens when american industry hires illegal aliens. is there really a problem or is the food industry trying to get us to eat something else or maybe buy peanut products from other countries? at any rate where were the fda inspectors before the out break occured? taking their usual pay offs? all pert of obamas inept administration.
I was told last year by a young local chef, who is a gardener and also cans and processes home-grown foods that he is prohibited from selling any of his products even at the local farmer's market, because they aren't "regulated," of course. He is going through an extensive and costly process just to be able to sell fresh products locally. Too bad we most often don't know where our food comes from any more.
My father and his brothers used to have a fruit and produce business, and they knew where every load of produce came from. No one ever got sick from eating anything, because if your produce wasn't good, NO ONE would buy from you (all the way down the line).
"Quality" is a concern of the past in so many ways. It's not about takig pride in what you produce; it's about speed, quantity and the almighty dollar. And everyone wants more dollars than they need in order to buy more things they don't need. Too bad.... for all of us.
They never seem to mention that peanuts don't create salmonella.
The real question is where is the cross contamination happening ?
Were these peanuts grown in feed lot waste fertilizer ? Human waste fertilizer ? It's not illegal to do that for some reason, our government not only allows it, they encourage it.
