Kroger recalls spinach over Listeria risk

Kroger is recalling spinach sold at grocery stores in 15 states due to possible Listeria contamination.

The Fresh Selections Tender Spinach was sold in 10-ounce packages and had a "best if used by" date of Sept. 16. The grocer said Wednesday that if customers did buy the recalled product, they should return it to stores for a full refund or replacement.

Listeria can lead to severe illness for women who are pregnant or people who have a weakened immune system.

The Kroger Co. said the product was sold in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. The recall involves its Kroger, Jay C, Owen's, Pay Less, Scott's, Food 4 Less, Dillons, Baker's and Gerbes stores in selected states.

Same old crap wait until the sell by date has passed by several days before telling anyone! If people start suing the stores that are putting us at risk just to make a dollar they would start making their suppliers check their products be they sell them to us. The pharmaceutical industry have to check every thing before selling their products, and I feel the store chains should have to also!

Kroger didn't wait until the sell by date had passed to notify people. They didn't know it was contaminated until people purchased and began getting ill that it was discovered.

And why is the first thought that comes to mind is to sue....? geeshh.

Kroger is a corrupt company that puts profits first an customer safety last. Deal with it....

      You are obviously an idiot.

When you have consumable products and put profits ahead of customer safety, you have no (live) customers. If anything, Kroger is obsessed with customer safety and quality.

This story about a recall appears 3 days after the "use by" date. Thanks for the advance notice!

Can't any of these food growers, processors and suppliers be trusted with the food that we buy at the grocery store? The price of groceries are sky high so I know that they are making tidy profits. If they are taking shortcuts when it comes to sanitary conditions to squeeze more profits from their product, which I suspect is the case, they should be closed down. The cantaloupe outbreak last year that killed and sickened quite a few people was due to the processor buying used equipment that was rusted which resulted in the company not being able to thoroughly clean it.They knew it was a health hazard. They are still in business and the government has pocketed their hefty fine.

I love spinach but I have not eaten any in years and have no plans in doing so in the future. This goes for lettuce and cantaloupe also, unless I get a severe case of constipation.

Kroger donates 1,000's of cases of food to Helping Hands, Second Harvest, Share and many other non-profit organizations.

So how is Kroger suppose to have those items returned being that these items may already have been handed out.

I worked for Kroger for 5 years and I had to get away from them, they also throw out tons of stuff writing it off taxes. I've seen some really nice things go down a chute that could have been sold at markdown or donated. They'll toss it before they chance a lawsuit nowadays.
