Mangoes from a Mexican supplier with several plantations and a single packing house have been tied to an outbreak of salmonella infections that has sickened 121 people in 15 U.S. states and sent 25 to the hospital.
The outbreak of salmonella in mangoes also sickened at least 22 people in Canada.
Food and Drug Administration officials warned consumers on Friday against eating mangoes produced by Agricola Daniella, a producer in Sinaloa, Mexico. The firm has been placed on import alert, the agency said. That means the fruit will not be allowed into the country until the supplier proves the mangoes are free of the pathogen through independent laboratory testing.
At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated cases in the outbreak of Salmonella Braendreup that has sickened 93 people in California and eight people in Washington state, as well as a few each in 13 other states.

Dorothy Pearce, 92, of Stanwood, Wash., is among 121 people in the U.S. sickened by contaminated mangoes now on import alert.
She's shown here in August, the weekend before she became ill.
One of those victims was 92-year-old Dorothy Pearce of Stanwood, Wash., who was hospitalized for 10 days after eating mango, a favorite fruit since childhood, her daughter said.
“She’s been really, really sick,” said Trisha Pearce, 59, a retired nurse whose is suing Splendid Products of Burlingame, Calif., the distributor that recalled mangoes sold nationwide on Aug. 29. “My mother doesn’t cry or complain and she was crying.”
Health department officials confirmed that Pearce was sickened by the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup, Trisha Pearce said.
The Pearce family is represented by Seattle food safety lawyer Bill Marler, who said the lawsuit is the first filed in connection with the salmonella outbreak tied to Daniella mangoes.
Like most victims of severe salmonella poisoning, Dorothy Pearce suffered fever, diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. The illness has weakened the previously active artist who had just displayed her paintings at a local fair.
“To think that just to eat something can make you this sick. She’ll never eat another mango again,” said Trisha Pearce.
The recalled mangoes were sold at retail outlets across the United States between July 12 and Aug. 29. They can be identified by the Daniella brand sticker and one of the following PLU numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959.

This is preventable in our modern world.By several means this can be accomplished.WHY IS IT NOT MORE OBSERVED AND PRACTICED?
because there is no profit in it
Why would an American eat something from mexico ?? were the workers crap in the fields, and are a very dirty people, Hiv , Hiptise, all kinds of deceases !!!!
I actually got a call from my grocery store about this after I bought two mangoes in the 4959 lot. I'd already eaten them both but thankfully I didn't get sick.
Actually, this is the reason why I, and most of my friends, do not buy produce from Mexico.
Salmonella is also found in the USA, it is found anywhere unsanitary conditions are present.
99.9 percent of all foodborne outbreaks in the US are from the domestic food supply.
Regulation and monitoring to keep our food supply safe is a must. There is no profit in it except that your grocery business will go down the drain if you sell contaminated food. Still, I'd rather buy safe food and skip the salmonella.
I realize this is something serious but it's also getting annoying.
"News update! Salmonella found in melon...in chicken...in eggs.. in mangoes...etc"
We get it, but you also have to consider how many people have gotten sick, 120 in this situation, where they reside in, 15 states as of now. MSN really needs to get its act together and post newsworthy things. Lately I find that I'm reading the most useless of articles about the Kardashians, and other celebrities that are hated on this site.
I don't understand. You're saying that salmonella that could sicken or even kill people is less news-worthy than the Kardashians? Why click a link for an article that doesn't interest you? Do you think it's possible that some people may be interested in something that could cause health problems?
Before eating any fruit you need to wash it thoroughly, this will prevent you from getting any salmonella. Fruits when harvested are washed lightly only to wash dirt and debris. But the manual handling afterwards is present.
Consumers should be able to buy products that are safe for themselves and their pets -- period.
I see they still don't wash their hands after using the bathroom in Mexico.
a windfall for the ambulance chasing lawyer. the patient got treated with medicare funds and this will personally benefit the patient and lawyer. actually the patient should refund the money to medicare and no double dipping should be allowed. only in the u.s., the patient is allowed to benefit from the health injury and it can be blamed on others. why the mango not washed before cutting or heating is a big thing.
Didn't read the article did you?
I ate a dozen of the 4584 number and enjoyed them very much, but I wash and peal all fruit (with skin) before I consume.
Just another reason to buy American grown produce only ............
Those pennies you save on foreign produce could cost you .....your life.....
They do not have our standards for quality............
And will sell anything they can , just check the quality of their other goods against ours.... Having once worked for a company that moved some of it's production department to Mexico , I remember.............I remember how many shipments were sent back as scrap and the number we kept , but had to re-work to pass standards . money isn't everything..........Quality costs , but it's worth it........
At least my friends and family are .............
Hey Mexicans wash you f^%k&*g hands after you go to the bathroom!
You hit that on the head!
Went to the state fair here in MN a couple of weeks ago. I stopped in a restroom and all of the stalls were "occupado". One by one they became vacant and each time a "hispanic" person came out. First stall - pee everywhere. Ok. go to the next also vacated by a "hispanic" guy. Once again, pee everywhere. Third stall - another "hispanic" guy comes out. Once again, pee everywhere. And NOT ONE of them washed their hands before they left the restroom.
It isn't any coincidence that alot of Mexican restaurants get shut down because of salmonella and hepatitis.
As the world becomes more populated there will be more food borne illnesses. Any farm that has wildlife walking around can spread lysteria and e-coli
ISS. You mean like cantalopes? Salmonella is very common in the U.S. Notice 277 people got salmonella from eating cantalopes grown in the U.S. You need to wash all fruit. As for peeling the mango, how would you eat a mango if you did not peel it? How people get salmonella from mangoes is not washing the fruit and then cutting it in slices or simply biting into the mango with the skin still on it. Wash the mango and peel it completely. Eating fruit only from the U.S. does not mean you will not get salmonella.
Sometimes I wonder why stuff like this makes the news. Then I realize. Look at how many people ended up sick because they didn't take a couple of minutes to properly wash and prepare something before they ate it. Maybe each one of these stories will help to remind someone to take proper precautions. I know they sure remind me to remind my kids to wipe down counters and wash everything before they eat it.
Send all the Chinese and Mexican crap back to where it came. Clean up America.
They all need to leave.
@Nuclear Waste, Darby; How dare you making that comments! Don't you ever realized how much money US owed to China? How some of your clothing are made in Mexico & China? What about the Chinese and Mexican food you eat? Look @ yourself in the mirror and clean your own yard before judging anyone... Shame on you, Dude!!!
LOL,,how do you people not understand that in most middle eastern and south american cultures, they laugh at us americans for using toilet tissue. Thats right they use their left hands as their hygiene tool!! Thats why it's an offense to offer you left hand in these cultures....LEFT hand=feces. This same left hand then goes back to food service, and produce. This is ongoing, Chicago, LA, Detroit etc...anyplace with a heavy immigrant population. Thats why you are seeing more and more of these cases. Major us cities are seeing huge influx of migrants (illegal or otherwise), and this VECTOR, affects all sectors.
They are also cutting your meat in major packing plants...
I don't understand how this woman has a lawsuit...if she had properly washed the fruit, she wouldn't have gotten ill. I feel bad for her but why does someone owe her money because she didn't take an extra minute when preparing the fruit?
It may have had a small cut on it that couldn't be cleaned or the naval part was torn off....... We don't know, what we do know is that she wasn't the only one to get sick and that they do have measures to test before it hits the public.
Telling some dummies to wash their fruit regardless of where it originates from is like telling a 6 month old kid to change their own diapers and wipe their own asses. It ain't gonna happen!!! Don't waste your breath. The U.S.D.A. shouldn't have to circulate common sense posters. However, under the circumstances if they didn't, all types of plagues would still be present to some idiots. 92 years old or not.
She may have thought she washed the mango, but in reality forgot to do so. Mabey the lawyer/ambulance chaser will wash all her food from this point forward. Mabey she was in a hurry to watch X Factor, or DWTS to worry about washing anyting. She'll never tell.
EXBOSTON - that just made me hurl my breakfast.....
The whole import everything strategy is working great!
.
I live in Mexico and I am having a mango smoothy for breakfast.
Wash your fruit! Even if you are not eating the skin, wash the skin,
when you cut the fruit, you can contaminate the meat inside.
You should even wash your bananas!
I boycott mexico to begin with. My business does not buy products from there and nor do we directly sell to that country. Yes, it should be common sense to wash fruits and veggies first but most Americans don't eat them to begin with.
Salmonella on Mangos from Mexico? Might, the Salmonella that is found on U.S. produce, have walked across the border on an Illegal alien fruit picker?
I can't believe you wasted the time to post that........
