Free birth control under health law starts today

Starting Wednesday, millions of American women will no longer pay for birth control pills, Pap smears or mammograms -- not even a co-pay. Women also have the right to free breast-feeding support, supplies for pregnancy-related diabetes, also known as gestational diabetes, and even screening for domestic violence.

President Obama's health care reform is drawing fire from Republicans, as provisions enacted today mandate all employers provide free contraception to their employees. NBC's Brian Mooar reports.

It's not clear how many women will take advantage of the new policy, but the US Health and Human Services Department estimates that 47 million women, ages 15 to 64, have private health insurance plans that will be affected. The 2010 health reform law requires that policies provided by private health insurance companies pay for a list of women’s health preventive services, starting August 1.

However, there may be a delay in services for many women. The law applies to new policies -- women with existing coverage may have to wait for their policies to renew for the requirements to kick in, which could take months. Many health insurers already provide this coverage.

The new rules are based on guidelines from the independent, non-partisan Institute of Medicine, which said paying for these services will save money and lives down the road.

“We want healthy women to have healthy babies,” said Dr. Jennifer Howse, president of the March of Dimes Foundation, a charity that works to prevent birth defects. “Receiving regular medical care greatly increases the likelihood that important messages can be delivered to pregnant women around issues such as nutrition and tobacco cessation, and provides opportunities to detect potentially dangerous conditions like gestational diabetes or high blood pressure.”

There are a few exceptions. Purely religious employers don’t have to provide the services to employees if they object. Related groups, such as Catholic-affiliated universities, have objected so the Obama administration offered what it called an accommodation, forcing the insurance companies themselves to pay for the coverage. But the religious associations still object, as do Republicans in Congress. They have promised to repeal the whole law if they win enough seats in the November election.

On Friday, a federal judge in Colorado ruled that a Catholic-owned heating and air conditioning company in Denver did not have to provide contraception coverage for its workers.

Americans also get refunds starting today from health insurance companies that spent too much on administrative expenses. The law requires health insurance companies to spend at least 80 percent of premiums on actual medical care and not on salaries, office rental and other overheads.

While opponents continue efforts to repeal the health care law, HHS secretary Kathleen Sebelius cheered the the promise of free screening for women's health services.

"For too long insurance companies have stacked the deck against women, forcing us to pay more for coverage that didn't meet our needs,” Sebelius said Tuesday.

Let the sex begin...

If you think there was no sex happening before today, I've got a bridge in Alaska to sell you.

Slowly but surely we are joining those in the rest of the civilized world who make health care available to their citizens.

As a nation, our people are our greatest assets - why wouldn't we want everyone to be healthy?

All the head in the sand rhetoric is not helpful, 500,000 teen pregnancies a year with the cost to the state to help look after the children, I think this is a small price to pay to help prevent unwanted pregnancies.

You also miss commenting on the protection of women's health through mammograms.

To the individual spout the sin wagon, incidences of unwanted pregnancies are higher in those teens who are taught abstinence.

I find it ironic that on one hand we don't want the government in our bedrooms saying who we can and can't sleep with and what we can do, but on the other hand, we expect the government to mandate that the protection for all this stuff should be free and dictated as such by the government. So which is it? Do we want the government involved in our sex lives or not?!

This will allow women to get earlier health care, avoid abortions, and better reproductive care.

This is the kind of thing that lowers health care costs because you prevent serious illness through regular health screenings.

Note: you already pay for people who don't get regular care. They just wait until its serious and more expensive.

But no, they won't use it. Then they will complain about WIC, welfare and everything else.
Insanity. Only solution is to use birth control.

....-6448092 and openmind266 demonstrate the unmitigated motivations of a large segment within the GOPeaParty regarding sexual matters.

They view human sexuality as a mostly moral (aka religious) domain over which they desire jurisdiction. The (to them) health and societal concerns are strictly subordinate.

They obsess over abortion yet oppose the very policies that are most likely to make it less common.

Surely, in these and many cases, the primitive mentality characteristic of pagan cults is covered only by a thin veneer and struggles to be set, yet again, against our world.

I don't understand... isn't it the premiums paying for their health insurance it now just covers what they want? This isn't government funded birth control its health insurance funded which got by because around 50% people on those plans didn't care about it... but since the government said they have to cover it it must be evil...

btw... Colleges and clinics already give out free rubbers...

Many of us eat properly, exercise and try to take care of ourselves. We pay the same premiums of those who smoke, eat fast food and lead sedentary lifestyles. We all pay toward health care, so in theory, it will be more affordable when something goes wrong (either through your bad lifestyle choices or not). Personally, I don't mind paying a little bit more to insure that all health care, either for contraception or for those who don't take care of themselves, is available for all. You may not agree with my choices, but unless you are perfect, there is a good chance that your choices are even more costly than mine.

It seems that everyone is so afraid to pay for something that they aren't getting. But that is the way it works. None of us need the exact same services. You might not need birth control, but you might need cholesterol meds. Another person might not need cholesterol meds, but will need birth control. It may even out in the end, but if you're very lucky, it will not. If you are very lucky, you will never use as much as you paid into health care premiums.

What is really sad, and so un-American to me is the selfishness I see on these boards. So many of you would rather see your neighbor die than to have universal healh care. I don't care of the really, super poor can't afford to pay. Their current way of dealing with that is by going to the ER for the flu and who do you think is paying for that? If the poor, who can't afford health insurance can get free preventative care, then they will hopefully stay healthier and will not end up with pneumonia down the road, which could require hospitalization and be much more expensive. If your insurance company chose to raise the price of your IUD and they are using the "impending gov't health care changes" as an excuse, put the blame where it lies. With the greedy insurance company. Not with Obama, who like me, doesn't have the heart to watch a poor person die of a preventable disease.

I don't even use birth control as I had my tubes tied years ago. I use way less in medical costs than I pay each year in premiums. But there a lots of folks out there crying about having to pay for someone else's birth control that are using for more resources than the woman who gets birth control. You are saying that this is not personal responsiblity. Sounds like you are afraid of paying more than all of those kids out there who don't contribute toward their own health care costs. Then get out of the system. Drop your health care and then you will be 100% certain that you pay only your own costs. Let the rest of us who are socially responsible be part of the system that, while very far from perfect, works.

Politically, I'd say I'm conservative trending to moderate. I'm female. I personally think that preventative care is a wiser course of action that trying to pick up the pieces later. To those of you who are trying to paint the women that want birth control as those of ill repute, I say to you that there are different types of birth control with advantages other than stopping pregnancy. There is also the advantage of women being able to control the size of their families. Furthermore, what about the men in the equation? If it takes two to tango, then why not judge the men who are sleeping around?

Free birthcontrol has be around since the early 70s and it hasn't stopped unwanted pregnacies or abortions. People just have to get off their lazy welfare bus & go get it. I know a family in town where the mother allows her daughters to have unprotected sex, one had 3 kids by the age 16 & grandmother collect welfare & foodstamps to use for drugs. The childsupport division had to test several sperm donors to fine the biological breeder. This is what is wrong with our society, no parenting & too much government contolling our children & re-enforcing the beliefs government knows best & over rules parent authority.

Oh if you all would go back at a look at the history of mankind (outside of politics & religions) 14 was the average when our species natural started breeding & the average death life expectancy for men was 22.

I for one say instead of socialism how about teaching your children to take personal responsibility instead of living off your neighbors. As for the argument, European countries have better & we should be like them, if this is your true belief go enjoy their prosperity, taxes & government control. My family came to America to excape such masters. Besides doesn't appear they are doing better then us.

what is the matter with everyone? The law does not make taxpayers pay for birth control, helloooooooo?

It makes the insurance companies cover birth control along with things like mammograms and pap smears, all of which are medically necessary for women.

If you don't want insurance companies to pay for mammograms then they shouldn't pay for prostate exams either.

Also, birth control is not about single women sexing it up. Many married women use it, and there are many women who need it for conditions such as endometriosis. Birth control is also a medical treatment for a number of female ailments that protects the woman's reproductive health.

stop preaching about sin or sponging off the system - and see the big picture.

Y can't we just have healthy women? Y must they breed?

U do know, don't U, that it's not a bad thing not 2 breed..........

And I agree with the people asking BC vs welfare babies. I would rather pay for BC than welfare babies.

Angie,

Since my insurance rates are going to skyrocket because insurance companies are forced to pay to take care of your female plumbing for free, yes it is my money.

And when I have to drop health care for my employees because it's gotten so pricey, I'll make sure they thank you and your president for the gift!

Anoterh example of inept leadership. Middle class crumbling under the weight of joblessness, a close to destroyed housing industry, unaffordable college and more of the 'American Dream' falling apart for the middle class. Our economy tanking but oh so good to know we now are paying for birth control and maternity classes, breast feeding supplies. it is so ludicrous I can barely believe it. If someone wants to pay for wone's birth control and breast feeding supplies, classes etc. let them-OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS-it's called CHARITY..who asked us if we wanted to pay for it? NO ONE. I'll pay for jobs, I'll pay for a jump start to the housing industry, I'll pay for REAL economic experts to come up with a real plan to get us out of this mess that is taking this country down-but NO-no jobs, no housing help, no loweing of the debt-instead we get free freakin birth control and breast feeding instructions. Watch out America, more of this nonsense to come from this administration..we'll have a nice homeless, jobless population that has free birth control and knows how to breastfeed. How helpful..Insanity.

Women pay more in health insurance because they use it way more than men. Now a 23 year old guys has to pay almost as much as a 70 year old woman.

Car insurance is cheaper for women. Is that not discriminatory?

Why is it that everyone jumps to "bring on the sex!" when it comes to birth control? Or assuming it is only for preventing pregnancy? I, like many other women, require birth control to stabilize my hormones. Otherwise I would be sick for 10 days, sucking down pain killers, and suffering once every 2-6 weeks (irregularly). Are there women out there that use it to prevent pregnancy? Sure, I've met a few, just don't assume every woman on the pill is using it simply for it's contraceptive elements.

As for the new policy, I'm happy for it. I hope it helps all those in need of care.

I am reading the posts here and can not believe the insane and self absorbed comments that I am reading. Chick, I think is just here to tick people off and nothing more since the statements he/she posts have no truth to them at all. I see just a sad and lonely person with very little intelligence. As for birth control, it is prescribe for many other reasons other than the purpose of avoiding a pregnancy. Trying asking middle aged mothers why they are taking them and you will get a host of different answers. All the nonsense about MY MONEY and keep govenment out of my life are statements made by folks that know nothing of our history. Our government was formed to protect us from the evil and uncivil forms of aristocratic rule and guess what... they made the same dumb statements that I am hearing from these ultra-right wing conservatives. There was a time in this country when REAL AMERICANS knew that what made this country the envy of the world...WE ALL KNEW THAT AMERICA WAS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE SUM OF ALL OF IT'S PARTS!!! People and that includes most of everyone's ancestors came here because of that and knew there would be a opportunity for them and their families. Most of you right wing conservatives need to stop being so racist, selfish and just plain uneducated. Look inside yourself and you will find the truth in what makes you feel that way...and you probably would not like what you see, if you know how to tell the TRUTH.

Mickeyp, your insurance already pays for Viagra. Now it is time for a woman to be able to counteract it. Not all women want to abstain, especially married women.

Also, birth control pills are not just for birth control. Several years ago, when I started going through "the change," I was bleeding profusely. The doctor said that if it didn't slow down after a couple of months, he would put me on the pill in order to control the bleeding. I know several women who have taken, or had taken, it for other reasons than to prevent pregnancy.

Mrburns - Driving a car doesn't check you for cancer or give you preventative healthcare. Everytime ovarian cancer or cervical cancer or breast goes past stage 1, it costs everyone else on the insurance plan more. Preventative measures always save money and lives.

No surprise this was going to be a politically charge post but it is sad to see the head in the sand people out their letting their political and religious ideals blind them. I think this is a great thing and for any doubters out there let me assure you it costs less to provide birth control than it does to have to let someone get pregnant and then pay for all that follows. All preventive care is cheaper than waiting for someone to get sick and we all already pay for those who can't afford it so don't give me that tired old line either. Also don't give me an abstinence speech either, yes it is true that will keep you from getting pregnant but expecting that to be an effective policy is like expecting it the next storm to rain gold coins, won't happen. But if you do believe in that then I have a bridge to sell you. On the sex part, try again. Was and will happen eitherway. And don't forget for all you doctors out there that the birth control is used for other reasons not to mention the other procedures that are very important to women's health. Now with this being said. Does not mean I don't think there needs to be some other concession on the welfare side either. I say now we start limiting the number of dependants to 2 or 3. That way those on welfare don't see a benefit to keep on popping out kids when they can't afford them. Sure not totally cut and dry but it is a start. Need to look at all parts that might be causing problems. At any rate glad to see this go into effect. Though I still hope we can continue to revise the healthcare law. I think it is a step in the right direction but needs more work, alot more unfortunately.

It is time

@Krestov

All the head in the sand rhetoric is not helpful, 500,000 teen pregnancies a year with the cost to the state to help look after the children, I think this is a small price to pay to help prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Dude you are the one with your head in the sand. Poor and low income women ALREADY GET free or reduced cost BC under title X now and yet they STILL account for 70% of unplanned pregnancies. So how the @!$%# is this new law going to accomplish @!$%#? All this new law does is provide BC to women who could already afford it. Miss Fluke, whom I'm sure we all remember, will soon have a 6 figure salary and yet we all get to pay for her birth control though higher insurance premiums; still can't quite get my head around the idea that people in this country are stupid enough to actually want to do that.

One out of every 5 people will stop and hand out money to a homeless person. But yet complain they HAVE to pay for their Hospital Bill. ?? Can you hear yourselves? If you care enough to give..then GIVE without contempt! People in need are people in need weather it be hurricane related or tornado passing through. Which is why the govt. should just get rid of Planned Parenthood. Left Wingers took control of that organization and now unless you are politically correct, any normal organization can't get funding.

Whys hould the government get rid of Planned Parenthood? This is a non profit organization (like many others) that receive federal and state tax dollars. It wasn't the left wingers that destroyed that organization, its the right wingers.

ANY non profit organization that receives my tax dollars, should be 'equal and fair' towards everyone and have ZERO rules about someone's race, gender, sexual orientation etc. Its time the right wingers STOP enforcing 'its okay' to get funding if you meet our criteria.

Someone explain how free birth control is a medical necessity for women. Last time I checked, sex was a voluntary thing. Is one who engages in sex (don't care how old you are) too stupid to be unaware of the possible STD or pregnancy consequences? Does anyone really think free birth control will curtail abortion?

Is the "free" part of this what everyone thinks will make a difference when you are rounding third base? How is it that any sexually mature woman who can afford, clothes, cell phones, etc, etc. can complain about the cost of birth control? If you wanna play, you gotta pay. I hear a daily glass of wine is medicinally good for you - would it be ok if you paid for mine?

      • 3 votes
      #1.106 - Wed Aug 1, 2012 5:13 PM EDT

Maybe for people like you, you have a MEDICAL reason to use it, it should be available, but in that case, and it sounds like you get them, your healthcare isn't DENYING it to you. So, what's the problem?

While I understand that some people use is for medical reasons not related to sex, how is birth control different from any other kind of medicine, in that case? I mean, why do I have to pay a co-pay for my allergy pills or asthma medication? What's so pressing about birth control? Something's not right here...

As for those who make a choice to have sex, if you're responsible enough for sex, shouldn't you be responsible enough to buy birth control? At some point WE HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS.

Also, what are the implications of women who will now use birth control as their sole contraceptive? For those of you who argue that this will save healthcare and government money in the future - you might very well be dealing with some very nasty STD's instead of unwanted pregnancies - HPV related cancers, AIDS, trichomoniasis, etc.

WOMEN, do yourselves a favor and PROTECT yourselves. Don't wait for government to do it for it.

I'm gonna add to that - a vibrat0r doesn't hurt when you're in need, it won't give you an STD, and it won't get you pregnant. Maybe the government could give them out for "free"? Wine would be nice, too!

@ my2centsworth: Birth control pills are used as a method to control hormonal imbalances in a woman. It is the safest and most cost effective way of doing so. If these imbalances are left untreated, they lead to infertility. With a growing number of infertile women and a decreasing age for women going through menopause (some even in their 20s), the number of people to support our aging population is falling even more short. No need to compound the problem further. Hence, the term "preventative".

I guess in hindsight, I would like the government to pick my next wife. I picked the current one, and I really did not do a good job at all. So yeah.

On the other hand, this is really a false choice. To say the government has to be in 100% or out 100% is not sincere. As with any area, the government can provide reasonable regulations without 100% control. They can regulate many issues regarding child safety, but can't usually name your child or pick the method of birth. You get my drift. Don't you?

We all pay for it through our employer's plan. I for one am glad to pay for this stuff, because prior to my hysterectomy I had to have monthly birth control pills (not for BC but for hormonal issues) and they were about $30 a month with my insurance. I can only imagine what they would have been without. This is every month and I had to skip the week of placebos, so a pack lasted me 3 weeks, really.

Even for an insurance company it's cheaper to cover BC pills than to cover a pregnancy, even a low-risk one, or cancer treatment for uterine, endometrial, cervical or other types.

Some insurance plans already have this stuff covered at no charge. My current employer's plan is one.

This has nothing to do with sex. Many women take BC pills for a variety of reasons, from hormonal regulation to lessening the effects of PMS or menstrual symptoms (trust me, we are talking about painful and debilitating pain).

Either way, it's far cheaper for an insurance company to cover preventive measures such as these and it helps women to make more informed health care choices.

"This has nothing to do with sex."

That is the greatest myth liberals have sold the American people. Birth control is about sex. The pill is about sex, the use of the pill is about sex, other forms of birth control is about sex. And when birth control is used for some other medical reason it is because birth control is just easier to get and doctors can sell it by telling patients that they get the added benefit of birth control. If birth control went away it was have minimal effect on women's health but we would see a drastic increase in pregnancies so yes birth control is about sex.

So birth control is absolutely and totally about sex. Doesn't make it bad, but liberals need to stop trying to sell deceptions to make bad ideas seem like better ones.

If you pay for prevention and prevent unwanted pregnancies and serious disease it saves the system money.

As it is, we pay for people without insurance that go to the expensive emergency room.

Air is currently FREE. But just wait until Romney says big businesses (you know, those corporation people) can claim it as theirs (like oil, coal, other mineral and resource deposits) and then start charging a fee to breath it. I need to corner this market before big business, then I can become one of the rich too.

Candlewyck has never had crippling cramps that birth control solved. Doctor put me on them when I was 14 because I couldn't even go to school for 3-4 days out of the month. I ended up with a bleeding ulcer at 14 due to all the pain medication I was taking to just be able to roll out of bed. Doctor put me on BC and I was able to live life normally.

Those advertisements for health companies and all those CEO's bonuses aren't free either... which is why the AHC just made those companies give us a refund for using more than 20% on overhead costs. I'd rather pay to have some woman who has painful periods a second chance at life at no fault of her own than a new boat for the CEO...

Candlewycke...are you a man? Birth control is not just about sex. I personally have used birth control to help with PMS and unless you have experienced the pain of PMS you shouldn't speak on it. Some of you folks on here really are a mess.

Its hilarious to see people think people don't have sex without contraceptives... or contraceptives don't have other purposes like managing medical elements....or everyone on contraceptives is having crazy random sex... Contraceptives are not a requirement of having sex, believe it or not people actually have unprotected sex for pleasure and not care that it could produce a child, stop acting like there are millions of women just waiting for a free pill to begin having sex.

Contraceptives are the answer to many of societies woes, like welfare babies, abortions, teen pregnancies, over population... please explain to me why women that can't afford these things must add to these problems? Do you really expect these women to become nuns until they can afford sex? I thought conservatives were for freedom not social control.

And last time I checked you had to pay for coverage..... how is this free again?
So I guess when the private insurance i pay for covers something for me, that is me getting free stuff off the government dime?

              BHO;

Above all, ask for more of what someone else has.

Actually, dadoftim, although many attribute that quote to JFK, it was actually taken from a speech by Lebanese writer and activist, Kahlil Gibran in 1922.

Have you stopped to consider that it is probably WAY cheaper for an insurer to pay for contraceptive pills than it is for the birth and the 26 years of healtcare costs of the results of an unwanted pregnancy. I don't hear united healthcare bitching about this.

Myself, I truly doubt that those #'s will change a great deal. I would like to be proven wrong, but I'm not counting on it.

Just got off the phone with Medica(my employer provided plan) and Vasectomies are NOT covered under this plan, and will not go in effect for me until my group renews which is 12/1. It really makes no sense that vasectomies are not covered as it is a far less costly, and less invasive procedure than tubal ligation, which will eventually be covered by my insurer.

Yes, I think you should look at the law - insurance companies will be required to provide free birth control, pap smears, and mammograms to those women they cover - public or private. The only exception is, that they can't make religious organizations pay for it. And yes, you can oversee this to make sure the insurance company doesn't pass on the costs to other consumers.

@nothingnewhere.... Sorry that there are no BC pills for men. I and billions of women everywhere wish there were. Scientists are trying and one day they will succeed. You should take it up to different anatomy, physiology and biological/chemical processes.

However, the preventive measures include free colon cancer screening and free prostate exams. Seriously, you need to look up how a female reproductive cycle works and then you'll realize your statement about the lack of 'freebies' for men is rather silly.

You see, we ladies are mammals who have evolved to be able to carry our progeny within our own bodies in an organ called the uterus. Our whole reproductive system is based on a cycle that repeats just about every 28 days or so (less or more for some women). Every 28 days (more or less), the ovaries release Ms. Egg (our ovaries have follicles with immature Misses Eggs; we are born with all the eggs we can release). Ms. Egg travels down the fallopian tubes and ends up in the uterus, where she's nice, warm and cozy.

Ms. Egg sits there for a while - about 24 to 48 hours or so - waiting for Mr. Sperm to knock on the door and come in. Most of the time, Mr. Sperm does not show within this very small window of time. Therefore, Ms. Egg decides it's time to shed the warm, cozy blanket created by the uterus and dissolve.

The uterine lining sheds and, by doing so, the capillaries that provide it with blood (nourishment) break, causing bleeding. That's called menstruation. Sometimes, Ms. Egg and Mr. Sperm are united, but there may be some disagreements, and even then Ms. Egg and Mr. Sperm break up. Sometimes, Mr. Sperm marries Ms. Egg and 9 months later you have a baby.

But the mechanisms that cause this cycle to go on from puberty to menopause (30-40 years of a woman's life) are a delicate balance of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, FSH, etc. If something is amiss with any one of these or if there is a problem in the pituitary gland or the thyroid, the whole system is thrown off balance and the best way to regulate the system and knock it back into place is using birth control pills which, by the way, are nothing more than hormones.

Unfortunately, this system is far more advanced and delicate that a man's cycle (yes, men have cycles too) of producing sperm. Sperm are produced all the time, without the need for a balanced and delicate system of hormones and other substances working together.

Leb - at 27 I couldn't find a doctor to perform a vasectomy. My Primary Care Physician, whom I'd been with for my entire adult life, said to come back at 33.

I went to Planned Parenthood and they were more than happy to slice me up but the state of Maryland had a mandatory waiting period (so I could "think about it" and "be sure") and I was moving to Colorado soon after and couldn't get it done.

Then I had to establish myself as a resident of CO before PP would do it out here. That took 6 months.

Show me anywhere in the Bible anything Jesus does or says that would support the Conservative/Tea Party philosophy. The supposed Christian Conservatives are the ones who have distorted Jesus' teachings, picking and choosing which directives they want to follow.

I don't have to "pick and choose" - Jesus' entire ministry was based on healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and forgiving the sinner. What was his new commandment - "Love One Another".

Jesus said about taxes - "render unto Caesar that which is Caesars". His last message to his disciples was "feed my sheep".

Don't get me started on a rich man going to heaven or throwing the money-changers out of the temple.....

                            #2.9

You totally don't get it, do you. If there are self-righteous tea partiers then they don't get to judge other mens souls. Matthew 7 is not saying if you are a pretty good Christian you get to judge others. It is saying that if any mortal causes another to be damned by exacting his judgement on another than that person is just as guilty as the damned person.

That passage is saying that God reserves judgement to himself. That it does not matter what those other people do, you don't have the right to sit in judgement. And that applies to all of us human beings. You can spout gospel at me all day long, it still does not give you the right to sit in judgment.

Uh, no. My insurance - for which I pay - has provided this for a while. My previous insurance - for which I paid - did not provide the coverage and instead offered BC pills at $30 a pack (usually a 30-day supply, with the last seven days being a placebo).

If it were up to me, birth control would be free and available over the counter, especially in light of the many reasons why women sometimes must (yes, must) take BC. Birth control pills are nothing but hormone combinations. They assist those of us (as I am a woman) who have issues with too much/little estrogen, irregular periods, a variety of uterine and endometrial conditions, debilitating episodes of PMS, debilitating menses, acne, etc.

In other words, for a lot of women, BC pills are as essential as aspirin. If you're a man, I suggest you go on wikipedia and find out how a woman's menstrual cycle works and that it is far more complicated and fine tuned than a pair of testicles.

                              Neither is correct.

Birth control is paid for by your insurance premiums. It is not free and it is paid for by you.

                              Correction.

Technically you don't pay for your own health insurance. You and others in your "pool" pay premiums toward the group's health insurance.

That health insurance covers all or part of the cost for a range of office visits, prescriptions and treatments. Some of the health-related conditions that can be prevented or treated include cancer, pneumonia, broken bones and unplanned pregnancies.

I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for birth control just so some horny women can have all the sex they want with no consequences. Just say no, ladies. Have some self-restraint.

I don't have a problem with the pap smears and mammograms for those without insurance, but I really resent this birth control pill issue. Now I have to pay for my own insurance and their pills. That's just not the American way.

Haven't been around much, huh? There are two people involved in sex, not just women. Men AND women enjoy it. The issue is one where the woman ends up with the baby and guy complains about supporting the baby. i would think a guy would be all in favor of the pill being provided for women.

This argument about using the pill was done back in the '60s and should be over with by now. Instead, we have many backward people making the same stupid claims and arguments against the pill. The pill has been a successful and great family planning tool for over 40 years. Lets leave it that way.

There are several problems with your statement...

                                1) is that isn't free if you don't have health insurance. I have health insurance, my health insurance is now paying for BC instead of me paying both for the insurance and the BC.

                                2) I am married with three children and I still prefer to have sex with my husband and not reproduce unless we choose to.

Think of it like this...more than likely your mother, sister, aunt, cousin, or child will have use of BC, your paying for them, if you are of that mindset.

Men get to pee standing up, Women get to have monthly menstral periods for about 30-40 years. Believe me, PMS without BC can be violent.

Yes, because these "horny women" you refer to probably weren't on birth control before it was "free" (meaning, paid for by their own insurance premium already). How about men have some sort of self-restraint? Or even better, why don't you step up and pay for half, or all, of your girlfriend/wife's birth control? Stop acting like we're the only ones who want to have sex--you do, pretty much everyone does. Don't give me that crap about how we're "sl*ts" (trust me, that's not the best way to go about getting laid anyway--"oh you're a sl*t for having sex! ..will you sleep with me?")

When I was in college (and in a long-term relationship with my now-husband), I didn't have insurance because I couldn't afford it. My birth control cost $75 a MONTH. Do you realize how ridiculous that is for a kid taking 18 credit hours and only working part-time? I think it's great that insurance is now forced to cover this, I'm already paying an insurance premium every month anyway, they might as well cover something I actually need. I'm a healthy 24-year-old, I don't need much besides a gyno visit every year & inexpensive birth control--maybe antibiotics (I tend to get bronchitis every spring...working in a research lab with red tide will do that to you).

Firstly, I'm not a male. Secondly, I take responsibility for my own reproductive organs. Third, I wouldn't use birth control pills if you paid me.

                                  Rachel,

I agree about boyfriends paying for half. My girlfriend and I use birth control and be each pay half (actually i pay one month, she pays the next). And this is considering that she needed it for a hormonal imbalance that could lead to cancer, so contraception was merely a happy byproduct.

By the way, how are tax dollars paying for something that we are getting through insurance? She pays a premium, just like I do. Just like almost everybody on insurance does.

If you pay a premium, you deserve comprehensive health care.

Oh, and Camo Jock (and DolphinFree), please look up socialism.

@DolphinFree: Some of us need BC to control other symptoms, not to have sex. I'm personally not sexually active but I've been on BC to regulate my irregular periods and imbalanced hormones for the last 6 years. Before that I was forced to take 1-2 weeks off at a time, get prescriptions for vicodin to cut the pain, and be violently ill the whole time due to the painful cramps. Don't assume that sex is the only thing on our minds, some of us just want to live a normal life that doesn't involve paying $50-75/month for something essential to our health.

I just wonder about the possible side effects of more women useing these drugs. I find it sad that the Government through the FDA pushes new drugs so fast through the system, then after a year, you start seeing the "bad drug" lawyers commericals comming out about how bad the drugs turned out to be. then the lawsuits, then the prices of all drugs go up. Meanwhile the health of the women are effected. Just like medical pot, the new laws will be abused.

For my life, taking responsibility and care for my reproductive organs means taking birth control every day. And secondly, thats nice if you dont want to take them, but everyone should have equal access to such an easy to manufacture drug.

So lets see... Free birth control... Does this mean that suddenly companies that make birth control will give away their product? No. It means that the government is paying for peoples birth control.

                                    And...

People will now get checks from their insurance companies because the government decided what is and what is not a proper way for the companies to use their money. And of course these checks come during the election but nooooo this is not an attempt to bribe anyone with Obama money from the government!

The country can just fix everything after November when Obama hopes to win again. And if he loses liberals can blame any problems on the new guy.

But of course women's health is more important than anyone elses health which is why men don't get free condoms or vasectomies. Oh yeah! Women are a bigger Obama constituency for Obama than men.

Obama will win in November. And the country will continue to suffer and the divisions will continue, in fact they will increase as class rhetoric from the left grows louder. More lawsuits will be filed to curb religious freedom. Taxes will increase. Illegal immigrants will be given a path to citizenship, which actually means a path to the voting booths. And in another 4 years Liberalism will be virtually dead because it will do what it always do, feeds off itself until there is nothing left.

November and Obama will not be the death of real America. The next 4 years will show real America exert its voice once again. The young who feel entitled will realize that their entitlements simply don't work. The so called 99% will realize that their 99% is actually a small minority. Chick-Fil-A will still be profitable and still closed on Sunday. In fact the only lingering threat will be the judges that Obama puts in place. But I also believe that the old idea of the Supreme Courts lack of any enforcement power will gain hold again and the liberal courts opinions will simply be ignored in favor of the legislative process where all American get a fair say and are not held hostage by the political minority.

And that is a prediction you can take to the bank.

I believe Candle knows how insurance works, as do most people. The problem is when you take out the costs to the person, that person will not care how much it costs, except for the one day a year when the insurance bill is paid. It is just like your paycheck. They deduct taxes and other expenses before you get your pay, so you do not miss it as much as if you had to pay for each item. If people had only 7K each year to spend on healthcare they would spend it better then if they had someone else, or an insurance company, government pay for it and then send them the bill for anything over 7K that was spent.

Antonnin Scalia is one of the best in the Supreme Court. He tend to follow the Constitution. Unlike many of the others. I kind of wish we had at least 6 more like him.

Candle, it really is people like you who are running our country in to the ground, not Obama.

You think that the Republican way is the ONLY way--your representatives in congress refuse to compromise on any issues. Every step Obama makes he is criticized, even if it's based off Republican theory or it's something a Republican president has done in the past (government bail outs, anyone?) You think poor people are poor because the CHOOSE to be--you ignore facts like racism, prejudice, marginalization, poor education. You spew rhetoric, hate, criticism, you tout that the Right way is the Only Way... but yet, you have ABSOLUTELY FAILED to come up with a SINGLE viable option to fix ONE issue in this country.

Christ on a cracker, I hated Bush with all my heart and soul, but even I can have the decency and humility to admit that he did some things right. I will even admit that Obama has done some things wrong. YOU, however, seem to see things in only black and white. Since you can't compromise or have the humility to admit that Republicans actually don't get everything right, then essentially what you want is to change America into a one-party system, which to me reeks more of fascism, and is downright Anti-American.

By the way: government isn't paying for the birth control... your insurance premiums are. If you're against government paying for birth control, go stand in line with the Planned Parenthood haters. Or better yet, move to a country where there are no social services, and see how much better they're faring.

If you get girls on BC when they are to young and immature to start thinking about a family then you are only ensuring that girls will be having more sex because they believe the pill absolves them of responsibility. I do not support abstinence but what is worse is giving girls (and boy) birth control when they are too young to understand what the consequences really are. It also tells a girl often as young as twelve that they can go ahead and start having sex because we grown ups cant actually stop them. Well news flash. We grown ups, as parents can in fact stop it. Its called being a grown up and acting like one.

Are you CRAZY?? Just because a young teen girl takes birth control which may be needed for a variety of reasons does NOT ensure that they will just start having sex. Good parents teach what are called MORAL VALUES, and birth control pills DO NOT destroy these. Jeesh get a grip.

Candlewycke, if lack of access to birth control meant that young people who are too unstable to raise kids successfully wouldn't get pregnant, we wouldn't have such a problem, would we? At this point, the majority of babies being born in the US are being born to unmarried women--lack of birth control is not preventing this mess.

The sad reality is that "free" bc is probably only going to help the responsible women who already use it. It will just save them copays. Let's face it, bc is low-cost enough that anybody who really wants to prevent pregnancy can cover the cost. They're just too irresponsible to use it. This new law will change nothing. That strata of people will continue to reproduce without thought.

I don't support abstinence if a few criteria are met: 1) person(s) are responsible and mature enough to handle consequences (STDs, pregnancy, etc) 2) person(s) are capable of caring for the child or afford to rectify the other consequences on your own. If you can't meet either of these, keep the horse in the stable, and the legs closed. Otherwise, have fun, but be responsible and be careful.

Number 2 will tick a lot of folks off. Sorry, if you're on welfare, you fail #2. If you have a child on WIC already, you fail #2. Just because you qualify for a state or federal financial assistance plan, does NOT mean you should keep having children or perform the actions that could result in such.

You know, there was a study done a few years back regarding teens and birth control. Two groups: teens given access to comprehensive sex ed and birth control, and teens in an abstinence only program. Guess what the results of the study showed? Teens with access to birth control and comprehensive sex ed did not start having sex at a younger age, have sex more frequently, nor have more partners than the teens in the abstinence program. The difference was found in pregnancy rates. Those in the abstinence only program became pregnant younger, and gave birth to more babies out of wedlock. The abstinence only teens also had higher rates of STD's.

                                      All other variables were equal.

I'm so tired of hearing the "Free Birth control isn't just about sex" nonsense. For those of you who had a medical reason that needed the hormones then your insurance plan would have covered it anyway.

I support the use of birth control for everyone. If it was used by the greater population we'd cut down on abortions/welfare/unwed mothers etc, not to mention reducing overall population growth which could greatly improve job availability, education, resources, etc.

Do I truly believe that "Free" birth control will achieve any of this? Hell NO.

Unfortunately Liberalism is an infectious disease caught from other likeminded people, its not genetic.

                                          The symptoms are:

                                          1. uncontrollable desire to spend other peoples money, have what others have without having to work for it, expecting others to care for you and protect you.

It becomes almost incurable when you reach the stage of chronic whining and complaining about inequality and social justice, waffleing and indecision over every little thing and the rejection and hatred of all know firearms and taking responsibility for your own actions.

Gee, do you think all that costs a little more than a woman's monthly birth control pill ?

Oh, and by the way, I'm a democrat and fairly liberal and I am a responsible gun owner. I must admit though that I was a bit dismayed when the gun laws in Arizona actually became more lax during Obama's presidency.

I don't believe that for a moment. Nor will it reduce the # of number of abortions performed in this country every year.

The only people who will be affected by this plan is those who already use birth control, and now have their health plans pay for it.

You wouldn't believe anything Obama/liberals/science said, so why bother trying to convince you? Even though multiple studies have shown that access to birth control DOES in fact, decrease unwanted pregnancy. Hence, the success of Planned Parenthood.

Anyway, I ask yet again, what's YOUR solution? "Aspirin between the knees"?

This isn't just about birth control. It's about access to preventative care for everyone.

Well, in 2014, everyone will be required to have health insurance (or pay a penalty), so that will cover just about everyone, don't ya think? One step at a time.

Please read the healthcare law, I have, I've been working in healthcare for over forty years, this means that as part of your insurance plan, screenings, mamograms, birth control must be offered with No copays, no coinsurance, which means the facility can bill your health insurance plan/pharmacy for the service, however, they must accept what the insurance company pays them. That's the problem with the R's there all hysterical about something they know very little about. Oh by the way, a mental health screening is also available, maybe some of you Teagopers should take your plan up on that. And for those that will say they will raise your premium because of this, no that is also written into the law, the insurance companies can only raise premiums a certain percentage per year based on volume of insured and payouts. So they cannot gough, but I'm sure you will all come up with some other insane claim about the law, like death panels.

But then again, I guess my bill is just an insane claim isn't it?

No, it's not free. Nor is it paid for by the taxpayers.

Please understand how insurance works: I pay a premium; insurance covers my medical bills.

Since taking office, President Barack Obama has signed into law twenty-one new or higher taxes: For obamacare here are just some. You think we will be better off.

Obamacare Employer Mandate Tax (takes effect Jan. 2014): If an employer does not offer health coverage, and at least one employee qualifies for a health tax credit, the employer must pay an additional non-deductible tax of $2000 for all full-time employees. Applies to all employers with 50 or more employees. If any employee actually receives coverage through the exchange, the penalty on the employer for that employee rises to $3000. If the employer requires a waiting period to enroll in coverage of 30-60 days, there is a $400 tax per employee ($600 if the period is 60 days or longer). Bill: PPACA; Page: 345-346

Obamacare Flexible Spending Account Cap – aka “Special Needs Kids Tax” (Tax hike of $13 bil/takes effect Jan. 2013): Imposes cap on FSAs of $2500 (now unlimited). Indexed to inflation after 2013. There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children. There are thousands of families with special needs children in the United States, and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education. Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington, D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education. Bill: PPACA; Page: 2,388-2,389

This law imposes a new 2.3% excise tax. Exempts items retailing for <$100. Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,980-1,986

So, would you rather pay for the results....???

My insurance company informed us a few months ago that they won't cover bc w/o copays until 2013, if at all. I have no idea why they can get away with it. So this new law clearly doesn't apply to everyone.

Doesn't matter to me, anyway, because I don't need it, but it is confusing.

I don't mind my tax dollars or insurance premiums paying for other people's bc--if there is one thing this world needs, its AS MUCH birth control as possible. I'd rather my money go toward preventing pregnancy than fighting useless wars. Think about how many expensive problems would be solved if only fewer people reproduced! And all lives that would be improved if every kid was wanted and born into an intact family who could actually support him or her. Unfortunately, I suspect that those who really shouldn't reproduce won't be the ones using bc anyway.

Insurance Companies will just pass on the costs of the woman's insurance bills. I suspect that they will go up at least 15% next year. Of course everyone is cheering, then they will vote, then the bill will come due, after the election, just as it was planned.

It will apply to you insurance company too. They can wait until its time to renew your benifits. They don't have to put it in play until then.

So it's just my insurance company milking me...it of course has nothing to do with the fact that they have to cover things they didn't have to cover prior to the law going into effect. Are you kidding me? These cost increases are directly related to keeping kids on their parents insurance, to paying for peoples birth control, to no-caps on coverage and all the other stuff in this law.

I think you misunderstand the nature of inflammatory comments. This is one of conservatives' greatest flaws in general. Your approach has been to see what names the liberals are hurling at you, and then toss them back. This strategy works in some areas of life, but applying it universally like a blind mole running through its biological program it is subject to does not benefit you in the end. As an example: liberals called Bush stupid. This is because his IQ appeared very low. Calling Obama stupid, when in all probability a solid 40 points separates your IQ from his, is not advisable. The same goes for liberals in general.

You have so many other footholds to gain. Obama is a poor leader, an ineffective negotiator, a divisive yes man. Yet you pick the one thing to criticize you could never hope to beat him on. It just shows you aren't paying attention and have no real clue if your values line up with those of your party. I can see I need to keep a closer eye on my base, dear voter. Just keep voting for gun rights and border security, and all will be well. But keep your opinions to yourself; you aren't helping us.

Like a braindead zombie, there is just one way to make them harmless.......

Dems are not stupid, they know if they reelect Obama they will get more freebees (the poor ones at least) because they pay little or no taxes. The middle class will get stuck with the bill, as the rich are already paying 3 times more, and with the right tax attorney, and planner they will come out pretty good. The only problem is the middle class vote to increase their own taxes, to pay for the smarter poor that know how to milk the system.

What is this country became stupid. We have had free Born Control send early 70's and free mammgram to women who can not afford mammgram for years. Well Care check-up is in your healthcare insurance that inclue mammgram prebirth control pills, Pap smears or mammograms all to prevent cancer. Ever state has program that will help anybody that need a well care check up or doctor should know this program free of charge. Taxes payer pick up bill but it has been here for along people.

So Obama administration offered what it called an accommodation, forcing the insurance companies themselves to pay for the coverage. So guess what that mean people our insurance co-pay will be higher and our insurance it else will be higher. So we get to pay two time for alright free born control and well check up for women. The Obama administration just show me how much there are not in touch the the america people. If the Obama administration did not know we already had free well checkup in each state and program the poor man Obama way way way way out touch. Oh, Obama been hand his healthcare all his life I forgot for a minute. He does not know what co-pay mean. Out of touch.

Sherri.....obviously you didn't read. Insurance companies are now required to spend 80-85% of premiums on actual health care. No longer are they allowed to simply up our premiums and deny us coverage in order to give their CEO's bonuses in the millions.

The refund checks are in the mail. Please, since you don't approve of health care reform, perhaps you could endorse your check over to me.

I would also like to see the checks have a statement that in order to cash the checks, that a person would have to sign a statement that if they do not agree with health care reform to send their check back to the CEO's.

well, Laura dear, they're required to pay 80-85% of premiums on actual health care - they didn't stipulate they couldn't raise your premium and charge you whatever the hell they want. *shrug*.

And to those who are talking about "free" this "free" that - please remember now the unemployed and those without healthcare coverage will have to pay to play under the healthcare mandate tax.

Looks to me like the HMO's will be laughing all the way to the bank - they give you a little yellow pill in exchange for a whole lot of money.

Now lets wait to see how many "poor" take advantage of the birth control and stop popping out babies for the welfare checks and all the benefits that come with it, like free college, rent, food, transpiration.

Oh ya, you just were not paying for all these things for your family you were paying for some girl/woman who wanted to get all the benefits of an unwed pregnancy. Think this kind of fraud is not a big part of the welfare problem, then you have your head up your butt.

So ya, I am all for free birth control! NOW lets wait and see who takes advantage of it the most. There will be no big surprise in a couple of years of girls/woman who did not.

Where does one sign up for "free transpiration"? Obviously, you never took advantage of educatonal benefits, free or otherwise.

Entitlement, entitlement, entitlement- ever try to grocery shop on Welfare Day? Jeez there's tatted Mama with her three screaming kids, (of which she chooses to have no control over) filling her cart with nothing healthy or nutritious wondering why her low life boyfriend is taking so much time getting their beer! Oh well, Mama will just checkout without him since she will have to return some of these food items quickly for cash to pay for the beer! Birth Control - no way - another child means more money in that Welfare check as well as more Food Stamp money! Yippee, if we hurry we can make it home in time to catch Jerry Springer on our 52" TV (at least I think that's what they said, although I can't we sure, as they never speak English). Sound ridiculous - yeah I think so to - just wished I didn't have to witness it over and over again!

If people cannot afford kids they shouldn't have them. If some guy can't afford hard-on pills he can't afford to raise kids and I don't want to pay to raise them. Bottom line - I don't want to pay for anybody's sex. Pills, condoms, contraception, abortions - nothing. If they do have a kid they can't afford, I don't want to pay for their housing, food, medical expenses - nothing.

This isn't about greed, religion, sexism, race or any of that crap. It's about what is fair. I expend my life earning money to provide for my family. I do not expend my life so breeding couples can have recreational sex or have kids they cannot afford. My having to expend a part of my life to pay for their decisions and their actions is not fair, no matter what the bleeding heart liberal progressives say about it. Period!
