Many years ago I got one well before the thought of children has crossed my mind. Getting it in wasn't all that painful, but when they took it out, it hurt so much I almost passed out.
And my fiance (now ex-fiance) used to whine horribly about how he felt the "fishing wire" during intimacy. I'm glad I dumped both the IUD and the jerky boyfriend.
I've had my amazing IUD for about three months now after getting off of the pill which I was on for 6 years. I'm 24, never had kids, and the gynecologist I went to (At my local Planned Parenthood) said that they're starting to see a rise in younger girls getting them placed as well, which I think is insanely smart. I always thought doctors would refuse to give it to a woman who hasn't had children, but my doctor said that it's not true at all. Why be denied such effective (and COST-effective) birth control? Modern science and contraception is a blessing!
It's been a while since I used BC, but I thought doctors won't give IUDs to women who haven't had children. Too bad, it's a better option than pills.
Find a real doctor? Elsewhere? If you live in a hick state/county, good luck.

They can. I've had both mirena and paragard, and I've never birthed a kid. It depends on the confidence of the doctor.
