UPDATE, July 27, 2012: The final tally is 425 people sicked in 28 states by salmonella-tainted raw scraped ground tuna, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
Nearly 400 people in 27 states and the District of Columbia have now been sickened by an outbreak of two rare strains of salmonella detected in raw tuna products used in sushi and other dishes, health officials said.
Some 390 have become ill and 47 have been hospitalized, up from 316 confirmed infections and 37 hospitalizations in May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed. No deaths have been reported.
The outbreak includes 14 people sickened by salmonella Nchanga and 376 people sickened by salmonella Bareilly, both rare strains of the foodborne pathogen. The culprit has been identified as raw Nakaochi Scrape tuna product produced by Moon Marine USA Corp. of Cupertino, Calif.
In April, Moon Marine recalled 58,828 pounds of the frozen tuna product. It wasn't for sale to individual customers, but may have been used to make sushi, sashimi, ceviche and similar dishes in restaurants and grocery stores.
The numbers of new cases have declined substantially since the peak of the outbreak in April, CDC officials said. Illnesses may continue, however, because some food establishments may be unaware that they received recalled product and continue to serve the raw yellowfin tuna scraped from the backbone of the fish. It has a long shelf life.
Seattle food safety lawyer Bill Marler has called on the federal Food and Drug Administration to release the names of all restaurants and other outlets where the contaminated product was distributed. FDA officials did not immediately respond to questions about the action.

The ate not one, but two cans of that BAD TUNA in one serving. It didn't smell or taste bad, but at 2:38 in the morning I was awaken due to my stomach feeling awful. I had to go to the hospital and was treated with an IV.

And in all those years they were not dumping raw sewage in the ocean and they did not have unscrupulous fishmonger who only think about profit like we do in the US. Other day lady next door asked me to look at something She had bough som packaged hamburger at he local grrocery store she showed me that in the center of the beef was a line of really brown hamberger that was actually offensive to smell. So profit is ahead of safety today because of the profit picture. Japan has stricter laws governing how food is handled and are not driven by the industry as uch as we are here.

Yes, but you failed to include in your post the number of Japanese who have died over the past 2,000 years from eating raw fish, especially the Blowfish, I think it's called, the one that's poisonous unless it is cleaned properly.
You evidently don't understand what you can and can't eat that harms you. I would bet anything you put worse things in your stomach than sushi. Get educated before you post any other remarks on something you know nothing about. Just for your information, the RAW fish is NOT the culprit. It the way the fish is handled and how long it has been around.

I was watching a documentary on some middle american family and i think the dad was cooking sloppy joe. He was cooking ground beef and put a bottle of ketchup into it. If that is what you people eat in order to stay "healthy", ill eat the raw fish.

Nice piece but what does it mean. Spinach ended up with ecoli because they were using water from a stream to wash it that had a cattle slaughtering plant upstream. Every time better laws on food handling comes up here it gets shot down. Testin is after the fact sometimes after the product is consumed and people get sick. I eat sushi on occasion but the guy that makes it runs a test on the fish he buys before he uses it.

A year or two ago, pistachio nuts caused a salmonella outbreak... it's not the product, but perhaps the preparation of the product that is harmful!

Wild animals don't have their fish processed and handled by low paid, careless, unsanitary humans and many have digestive systems that can handle pathogens.
Well, Rontron, without responding to your derisive put-down of people who work for a living ... even Raccoons are smart enough to wash their food before eating it; however I have yet to see one in an apron and stoking the barbecue.
The preparation of Sushi is an art, the results are DELICIOUS ... and occurrences of illness are rare (typically resulting from the improper refrigeration of an ingredient; much like getting sick from the potato salad at a picnic).
Most of the ignorant reaction I have seen to Sushi comes from people who have never even tasted it.

"Sushi" is not raw fish. "Sushi" is cooked, vinegared rice combined with other ingredients; sometimes including uncooked seafoods. The Japanese word for raw fish is "Sashimi". If you want to prove your ignorance it always helps your case if you don't even use the correct terms. Well done, knuckleheads.

Guess since it looks like it's the eater's fault for eating "raw" food, nobody should feel bad if a person gets salmonella from "raw" fruits and vegetables. Guess you should have cooked that lettuce. Should have heated that canteloupe to 165F internal temperature.

You do not need to cook fruits to render them safe to eat. You wash them. You wash vegetables also. You may need to cook them to make them edible for humans. The cantaloupe farmer used the wrong equipment to process the fruit which vastly increased the risk of illness. He violated long established processes to reduce the risk of illness. The lettuce and spinach problems were more complex. It was not entirely clear that even if you washed every individual leaf of spinach or lettuce you would have avoided the illness. And cooking may not have provided protection either.
I have been through survival training courses and it has always been stated to cook any seafood or game captured in a survival situation if possible. Cook using fire or a solar cooker, if you can make one out of the items you have with you in a survival situation. The same should apply to everyday food use of seafood or meat. The fire or heat is readily available, so use it.

It was not cooked spoils easily and better not consumed unless you are sure of the source that sells it. You can buy sushi in the corner drug store now days in some places. All from one souce and if that source does not do their job a lot of people pay for it all because of profit
Any retailer or restaurant that doesn't know where it's product comes from when there is a very visible recall deserves heavy penalties.

Sushi should be made with superior cuts of meat, but it should also be frozen. Freezing sushi meat overnight is how you kill any potential parasites without cooking it, and it works. Unfortunately, once you start to use processed foods like this 'scrape' garbage you start to introduce a number of new contamination sources. A good sushi chef, who uses only whole cuts and freezes the meat overnight and can recognize good fish (vs something not appropriate for sushi due to a number of conditions), can prevent these things from happening.

Baja is correct. There is was a study done to show about parasite in fish. Freezing it or cooking it well done will kill the parasites, Ceviche is actually bad (cooking with lemon juice) on raw shrimp and doesn't get all the parasites, raw fish that is fresh also has parasites.

The question that plagues me is, Why are we finding out in June about a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella that happened in April? D'ya think some of the 400 would have liked a heads-up on the sushi problem BEFORE they ate it, CDC?
Bad labeling regulations. The fish may go through 10 middlemen brokers before it gets to the store or restaurant We need a automated or durable tag on each shipment that tells exactly each step in the path from location of catch to store or restaurant. It takes time to sort all that out with manual paper records and uncoordinated tracking systems. Also the massive fraud in seafood can cause the investigators to chase the wrong leads. A lot of fillets are labeled as a fish species they are not in order to get a higher price from the customer. What do you imagine happens with a product made from flakes and scrapes of fish? Even greater fraud.

People tend to be short sighted when told that something is trendy or popular. I laugh at the morons who insist on sea salt. The oceans are so polluted that I don't want to eat salt that carries the pollutants with it. Mined salt which is what we have been eating for years ( you know the Diamond Chrystal type) comes from salt deposits deep in the earth that are at least 250,000 years old and were laid down by evaporating seas before there was any pollution. Which would you rather put in your body?
Sea salt tastes better to me, so I go with sea salt.
If you bothered to ever learn about anything, you'd know that sea salt has been used for thousands of years.
