Do you think a ban on big sizes of sugary drinks will curb obesity?

NYC's proposed soda ban: obesity tonic or free will fizz?

Sweet Jesus. The very first time the government moved to make a law that was "for our own good" we had all embarked on a very slippery slope heading towards total governmental control over our lives. And I honestly loathe the people who support measures like this. What you are doing is OKing totalitarianism with every measure like this that passes and I hate you for it.

Let's see.

Republicans - Against the right marry if you're gay. Against womens right to choose. Against workers rights to unionize. Against fair tax codes. Against the middle class.

Democrats - Against super size sugary soft drinks. The Swine!

Or Democrats - Against babies for routinely voting measures that murder them, against working for voting pro-welfare and pro socialist agendas, against the military, against common sense.

Bans like this are counterproductive. A sin tax is a better approach. If everyone had their own health insurance/could pay out of pocket and could afford the additional costs that come from being fat, then the government would not need to step into an arena that should be a person's choice. Sadly, we want the choice to abuse our bodies and then cannot afford the diabetes medicines, heart stents and bypasses, dialysis, etc. that comes from a life of morbid obesity. We like the freedom of choice but do not the like to face the consequences of those free choices. Keep abusing your body, but make sure pay you pay for your own medical care, bigger airline seats, higher tolerance public facilities, larger....

No, you do NOT get to use healthcare costs as justification for curbing other people's freedom of choice. There are all KINDS of things people do that can be dangerous and result in costly medical conditions, like every sport known to man kind. Should we ban all those activities as well? How about banning alcohol? Driving in a car? Walking to the mailbox in the winter on an icy driveway?

And my answer to people like you that WANT to use this argument as justification for government control over our lives is that than we should do away with health insurance entirely. Than we all WILL be paying for our own healthcare. How do you like that?

Did you mean to reply to my comment? If so, try re-reading the very first sentence.

I want you to be able to do all of those things, just make sure that you live up to the responsibilities that come with those choices. Why do you get to be a lard ass and not have the necessary insurance/funds to pay for your eventual, inevitable health care needs?

I can say I think it is not the size that is the true cause of it. I own a 100oz cup that a friend of mine got for me in Joplin before it was hit by the terrible storm and I get that cup refilled at gas stations daily. My weight in 2002 was 366lb and since then I have changed to diet sodas. My weight has dropped over 100lb and my doctor has actually expressed worry towards speed of my weight loss. I do not think it is the size of the soda but the type and also what else is being consumed while drinking the soda. Each persons body takes in sugars and other things in different ways so you can't just see soda as the issue. Look at the dollar menu burgers and fries that can be gotten almost anywhere each being taken in most of the time with a soda. Junk can be found anywhere and most of it bad for the body.

This is absurd, you can't get morbidly fat people to stop eating by making drinks smaller, the idea is simply idiotic.

Where does this slippery slope end? Will the government decide that weightlifting and football are too dangerous and ban them? Will I no longer be able to eat red meat because of cancer concerns?

I swear this world has gone insane.

This ban is stupid, I am a thin man and am in my late 60"s, so your goon squads will stop me from buying what I want. How is this different from the nazi's telling the people what they can and can't do. What is in your stupid bill to stop me from buying 2 or 3 or even 4 of the drinks? Mayor, you have lost your common sense. If you want to start with children in school, make them take gym class 3 times a week like it was when I grew up, people are so afraid of the lawyers suing because a child gets hurt, stop the lawyers first an then go after the lazy parents for not cooking a good meal at night and instead go to a fast food place.

Who really needs all that soda anyways. Its not going to harm someone to cut back on their soda intake. Obviously people are not making the right choices if half of NYC is fat. I loved that in NYC all the calories are posted for the foods being served. As a person who does watch what they eat it was a real eye opener. I don't know how anyone can sit down and enjoy a meal knowing that it is 1,000+ calories. I think that it is great that the mayor is trying to do something. I wish Wisconsin would take these type of actions.

First we lived through a decade with a mayor of a wannabe police state (providing you're not rich or white). Now we have to put up with a billionaire mayor who thinks he's everybody's daddy and wants to ban everything we enjoy about life from the seat of his helicopter. If Mikey Bloomberg wanted to do something useful for New York City, he'd slap a moratorium on further luxury housing; that's all that's being built any more. As a result, regular working people have no place to live, the numbers of homeless are rising every month and Manhattan is turning into Monaco on the Hudson. Bloomberg doesn't care about us becuase we're not wealthy. I voted against him each time he ran, and yet he's been Mayor for three terms. Politics is useless.

Bloomberg is the one of the biggest asses there is. Control Control Control freak! From Guns to sodas!! Go Figure. Ban large sodas right! Can't think of another way to control the will of the people. Stay out of the personal lives and choices of the people. Just because he has money and is one of the most corrupt politicians NY has seen in years. This gives him the right to tell you how much you can drink? Ban large beers? Force people to buy smaller drinks but more of them for a higher overall price.

              I think NOT.

Please...this should not be a government mandate. What's next? Smart Grid lights, so they can mandate a lights out time since "we need our rest"?

No one complained when the Big Nanny decided to curb smokers' rights and make cigarettes expensive. I'd say start taxing soda at $3.00 for every 12 oz. can. Now the slope is getting steeper.

Secondhand smoke effects other people. Soda does not.

I support a tax on soda-as it does cause health problems like cigarettes and costs us all money in the form of higher taxes and health insurance premiums. However, I do not support the ban.

How stupid. What's to stop people from just buying 2 or 3 drinks. People are fat becasue they lack the willpower to control themselves.

this seems like a governmental over step. i don't even know if this is legal? people have been destroying themselves for years with their choices, but even so, would i like the choice between a coke or a health drink? i would like the choice.

                            Reply#60 - Thu May 31, 2012 10:39 AM EDT

Now we have one more reason to hate New York. So you can buy 40 oz. beer but not a 40 oz. soda. That makes a lot of sense. Bloomberg would probably rather see some lady abort a baby than drink a large soda. Here is liberalism in all of its glory. Eat it up New York!

So big of you to take it out on the people of New York, who are already burdened with this government, Lion. Realy makes a lot of sense. Perhaps you should step out of the sun for a while.

Whose fault is it? That is right, the people of New York. They elect these idiots. They voted for Obama too. Michelle Obama preaches about eating healthy and wants government to regulate our intake as well. She, of course, eats all kinds of unhealthy $hit. Like I said, this is liberalism. They asked for it and they are getting it.
