Bella, a 2-year-old pug, died last fall after her owner, Robin Pierre, said she ate Waggin' Train chicken jerky treats.
Nearly 1,000 dogs reportedly have been sickened by chicken jerky pet treats from China, according to a new tally of complaints from worried owners and veterinarians submitted to federal health officials.
The Food and Drug Administration has logged some 900 reports of illnesses and deaths since November, when it warned owners about continued problems with the products known variously as chicken jerky strips, treats and nuggets, a spokeswoman said.
Back then, the agency already had heard from 70 owners about problems ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to kidney failure and other serious ailments after animals reportedly consumed the treats.
Since then, complaints have mounted steadily, putting growing pressure on the FDA to solve the problem.
The agency sent inspectors earlier this year to Chinese plants that make the jerky treats, two Ohio lawmakers previously told msnbc.com. No results of those inspections are yet available, FDA spokeswoman Tamara Ward said Monday.
Despite repeated tests since 2007, FDA scientists have been unable to detect any toxin responsible for the animal illnesses, officials said. The agency has asked certain pet owners to send in samples of suspect treats along with their animals' veterinary records.
Three top brands of chicken jerky treats were among those most recently cited by pet owners and veterinarians in complaints of harm, FDA records obtained by msnbc.com showed. They included Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brands produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, produced by the Del Monte Corp.
Import data compiled by the firm ImportGenius showed that Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch treats are produced and supplied by JOC Great Wall Corp. Ltd. of Nanjing, China.
Both manufacturers have insisted their chicken jerky treats are sound and that any illnesses are unrelated to the products.
But representatives from Milo’s Kitchen confirmed that the firm has paid at least one owner who complained about a sick dog $100 in exchange for a release of all liability.
The company examined treats submitted by the pet owner and reviewed veterinary records for the animal, according to Joanna DiNizio, a spokeswoman for the firm.
“Following the evaluation, the veterinarian consultant concluded the symptoms experienced by the pet were not related to consuming Milo’s Kitchen chicken jerky treats,” DiNizio said in an email statement.
A grieving pet owner says his 9-year-old dog was in perfect health until he fed her Waggin' Train chicken treats; the Pomeranian died 13 days later of kidney failure. He is now calling on the FDA to take another look at the product. WMAQ-TV's Michelle Relerford reports.
The dog owner has declined to be identified, but Milo’s representatives said they provided the $100 as a “goodwill gesture” and asked that the consumer sign a “standard release form.” Firm officials said such arrangements are conducted on a case-by-case basis and they declined to confirm how many similar agreements are in place.
A spokesman for Waggin' Train, Bill Salzman, said last month that the firm also negotiates agreements with complaining pet owners individually.
Such signed agreements do legally absolve firms of future claims, said Ron Simon, a Texas food safety lawyer.
“What the company is up to is to try to assuage consumer complaints without accepting liability,” said Simon.
However, he noted that in most states, pets, no matter how precious, are regarded as property with little change of recovering damages beyond the animal’s literal worth. Most lawyers probably wouldn’t accept such a case, he added.
“You don’t get mental anguish,” he added.
That’s outrageous to pet owners who believe their animals were harmed or killed by contaminated jerky treats.
Robin Pierre, 50, of Pine Bush, N.Y., contends that Waggin’ Train chicken jerky treats were responsible for the sudden death last fall of her previously healthy 2-year-old pug, Bella, who developed kidney failure.
"Right now the laws are protecting the rights of these manufacturers and we as victims/consumers have none," Pierre wrote in an email to msnbc.com.
Pierre is the founder of a petition to ban the jerky treats which now has logged more than 10,445 signatures.
FDA officials have said companies are free to recall the treats at any time but regulations do not allow for products to be removed based on complaints alone.
Pet owners can submit complaints to the FDA's safety reporting portal.
More chicken jerky treat news:

The FDA should ban all human and animal food imports from China. This would solve the problem. In the meantime stop buying all food stuffs from China people!
Consumers can't tell where the pet food is made because "made in" has been replaced with "distributed by some USA address." Many manufactures use this "distributed by" to give the impression that it was made here when in fact it was warehoused here, distributed here, and produced elsewhere.
It's hard to find dog treats not made in China. Best to make your own.
@ AG99, is it really hard to find treats made in the good old U.S. of A? Look at Petsmart or something like that. They are everywhere...
The FDA doesn't care about your pets, your person or anything else.. The FDA is owned by Big Pharma, Big Agra, like Monsanto.. The FDA rushes items through the vetting process and the full ramifications of the drugs that we are taking will not be fully known for decades. Aspirin is dangerous for you. EVERY lab made drug is dangerous.
The FDA needs to move to stop the import of every food item, toy or anything Chinese made, until China comes to the table and change their COMMUNIST ways.
Consumers should at least take the time to see where they are manufactured. Surprisingly, our local Wal-Mart has no Chinese treats. All are made in the US. Yet local pet stores still stock them.
Sheesh, travelinfotog - water is dangerous if you drink too much of it. As for lab-made drugs being dangerous, well I try to avoid consuming ANYTHING made by dogs - labs or otherwise.
The government has told the FDA not to release any damaging information about the dog treats and like good little cronies they are keeping any damaging reports under lock and key. Look at the labels, as soon as I read "distributed by xxx" I just assume that it's been manufactured in China and the company is hiding the information. As paranoid as it sounds, if you took the jerky to a private lab for examination I'll bet that lab gets a visit from the FDA with instructions as to what kind of information they will be permitted to release.
@ rk.. LMFAO.. MORON..
Sad and unnecessary loss of life.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda ... the political tide since 1980 has been to slice to bits all of the U.S. regulatory agencies that were finally firmly in place and doing a good job at protecting U.S. citizens, pre-Reagan. Who knew 30 years of anti-guvmint would end badly, with dirty food, dirty water, dirty financial industry, jobs overseas, and now dead pets?
It's been proven over and over that the Chinese could give a rat's arse about what's in their cheap pet food ingredients as they've been popped multiple times for putting toxins into filler ingredients to either falsely boost protein percentages or in other cases where that's not of concern just because it's cheap.
Most all pet food manufacturers here trace back to importing these same ingredients as most all can be traced to bloated corporations (just check some mentioned in the article); hence, even the pricey pet foods under various names are just as guilty as they meld into a very few corporo's..... obscenely nefarious and disgusting. Much blame belongs to China, our sold out government favoring 3rd world imports per their investment in all has a great share of blame as well.
In the end, we almost cannot be safe under any food's pseudo label; time to research extensively again and start the home cookin'. I don't even go into Wallmart to use the bathroom, I'm trying my best to be done with any Chinese crap (not easy, as labels in all are quite misleading and our manufacturing has been sold out for so long....).
chinese manufactured cold meds are responsible for many deaths. sold primarily in south america. the med was produced in a filthy garage and contained machine grade glycerin. don't buy chinese made food. dog treats made in china still sold in local 99 cent stores here in san diego. my dog gets purina dog bones treat period. well worth the price and peace of mind.
Nearly 1000 pets sickened or killed, all linked to treats manufactured in China, but they can't find anything wrong with the treats? Does the government REALLY believe we're that stupid. I say if my own government doesn't respect me any more than that........!
Hmm...I was sitting here eating Teriyaki Beef Jerky for HUMANS (Walmart's Great Value brand). Looked at the back of it and it says "DISTRIBUTED BY: Walmart Stores, Inc., Bentonville, AR."
NO MENTION of where the stuff was made. WTF am I eating?!
I don't buy any pet treats. You know that it is garbage. It can be cheaper to buy a pound of cheap weiners than some of these treats. Many pets are over fed just like their owners. Last week MSN highlighted a 39lb cat.

Dog food!
What has been and moreso now of US regulatory agencies is worse than a mere joke; 'slicing them to bits' is what's necessary and needed started over. A good start would be common sense; China's proven to be a food tainter so don't import their junk. Corporate farming has made recalls in millions and hundreds of millions of $$, so make 'em smaller and manageable. Corporate farming has proven to cause mass e-coli taintings due to runoffs, sometimes miles up stream or field due to lack of being able to be managed as well as concentrations of disease, poop, and whatever else being beyond what can be sustained and controlled.
Hundreds of thousands of TONS of beef alone is exported yearly, some bought back (the market, you know) and yet our prices climb, climb, climb. How much is done on public land, how much corn, grain exported, how many farmers paid to NOT grow at the behest of government, what's become of our government ever since (maybe prior to) the illegal Fed Reserve? More government... please! Less and real representation, real legislation towards America and Americans would do just fine... IMO.
Can't watch TV without big pharma pimping drugs, alternately can't watch without lawyer after lawyer after lawyer pimping lawsuits. Can't watch the news or read news stories without the FDA, EPA, and whomever else in government agency lying about why their corporate and political friends aren't guilty of any wrongdoings, why they can over look what all goes on in the food and med industry, talking out both sides of their mouths and finding ways to speak out their collective arses.
This is the stuff sold in the snack aisle of human food, right next to the good Jack Link's beef jerky that I used to buy. Guess paying more is truly worth it!
lynseypug - It's made by Jack Link's.
http://www.bestbeefjerky.org/2008/07/wal-mart-great-value-beef-jerky.html
Zuke's is made in Durango Colorado 100% good for you pet!
I am so sick of that crap coming from China, so many things have gone wrong, toys for the children, clothing dyes, dog food, why in the world are we still buying foods of any sorts from that country. Maybe they are out to get us too. Anything to save money and make more. I don't even know what to feed out dogs anymore. Ban foods from China and toys for that matter! I am sick of it and how much longer will we do this, until people start dropping dead!? Make the stuff here or get it from European countries, but here is best!!!
Keep shopping at WalMart. You get what you pay for.
I found that Walmart's treats were almost ALL Chinese made, but Petsmart has a lot, too. You have to look for a label that actually says "made in USA." If you want to know what the Chinese think of dogs, remember that only about five years ago there was a big stink because the ladies' handbags that were coming from China labeled "leather" were actually made from dog hides. Same with their "real fur" products.
We need to be able to protect our cherished pets from the pollution and garbage blowing over from China. Does anyone think they care about anything but our bucks? Haven't they had the worst human rights violations, so they aren't going to care about our dogs.
And, we should be able to sue the dog-killers as well. How is it dogs are property? While someone might damage my car, I wouldn't grieve for months on end, missing a chunk of metal, but we love our dogs, and they become a part of us. Can't a person be sued for damaging others' personal property?
How can a dog be property while they lick your face, play with you, want to be with you, beg to be held, love you? What kind of property does this? The law needs to be changed ASAP! And, someone needs to be responsible for killing members of our family.
Look carefully at the packaging, most ARE made in China and distributed by a US Company. I stopped buying any dog food products that were made in China after my girl ate one that I picked up at Wal-mart and got diarrhea. Checked the packaging: Made in China. All stores carry products made in China. US made products are a bit more expensive but cheaper than a trip to the vets. Check the web, there are several companies producing US made dog treats and chews.
If we just stopped buying the imported crap, it would be a non-issue. Buy American!
Wake up people. The FDA is being defunded by the GOP. How in the world will the FDA protect US citizens from Chinese tainted food when the GOP cuts the FDA funding?
Critters don't stand a chance, and we humans will have to fend for ourselves without FDA help. Thank the GOP and all those anti-American businesses buying this crap from China and re-labeling it here to pass it off on us.
Find the American CEOs that are doing this to us and deport them all to China!
skup - Ewww. Look at the ingredients list. This is cr@p: Beef, water, sugar, salt, corn syrup solids, dried soy sauce, maltodextrin, monosodium glutamate, flavoring, hydrolized corn protein, sodium erythorbate, paprika, sodium nitrite.
Filled with a bunch of chemicals. Sugar AND corn syrup solids. Mmmm. MSG! Sodium Nitrite. This is really bad stuff folks. I think you can pick a better treat than this.
Damn chinese. The shadiest country in the world, and our corporations love doing business with them. The US companies involved are responsible as well, and if there are no charges against them, I will be ashamed to consider myself American.
granny,
I found it most interesting that you said
right after saying
since it is Purina's dog treats are one of the 3 major brands that began this sickening of dogs here in the USA.
My daughter's dog loves those kinds of dog treats too, especially Milk-Bones (distributed by Del Monte, made in China) ... but since last November, when she has me babysit him on occasion, I will NOT give him any or any Purina dog treats, also made in China.
Purina and Del Monte are the 2 top brands, made in China, killing and making our pets sick. Two yrs ago, it was cat food ... and baby formula - both containing melanin.
In the pet food, it was to boost the "protein" reading of the pet food and in baby formula, no clue how it got there (possibly the melanin "enriched" cattle feed fed to milking cows). Baby formula used to have 0% tolerance for melanin until it's discovery in major name brand baby formulas with levels just below .2%, so the FDA, under the Bush administration, immediately changed the FDA tolerance level to .2% so China would NOT be held accountable and their levels of melinin in baby formula didnt have to be chanced. Their own babies in China, at the same time, were being sickened and killed from the milk alone purchased at their supermarkets from the toxic melanin found in their dairy milk.
There is an article linked just under this article 3 big brands may be tied to chicken jerky illness in dogs, FDA records show which are 2 made by Purina and 1 made by Del Monte. Both Purina and Delmonte have their dog food and treats made in China, a country that dispises dogs as pets (outlawed in most cities in China - special cull of all dogs after their big earth quake we, with NATO, assisted them with) and only enjoys them served on a plate.
It is the chicken jerky and treats that are maiming (liver failure, same as the infants from formula and Chinese kids from their "fresh" milk) killing America's pets, dogs in particular. If it is in dog food, it is most likely also back in cat food.
Over the past 5 years, they have sent us lead tainted toys and furniture for our kids ... lead tainted mugs and cups .... baby furniture that not only was lead tainted, but collaped, killing our babies in their beds .... melanin tainted baby formula, cat food and now dog food (I will assume it is from the melanin that they discovered tainted their chicken meat and eggs when they had the recall for those tainted eggs) .... and all we, through our government "protection" agencies, do is lower our FDA standards for safety to make sure their profit margin isnt dented.
China has proven that they are NOT communist when it comes to their profit margin and are more addicted to capitalism than any other nation. They do NOT care who is harmed by their "snake oil" and our US companies are more than willing partners in their misadventures.
All because it has a US name on it does NOT mean it is made in the USA, employed US workers or even helps the US economy. It doesnt. I was even amazed when I found that most US automobile companies productions had a 2 in the first place order of the auto VIN, meaning they were made in Canada, yet Honda's vehicles have the 1, meaning that a foreign based company is the one who makes our cars here on US soil, emplying US citizens and contributes to our economy.
Made in the USA (and not the US territories, like the Northern Mariana Islands) should be our priority. It is only subject to our safety standards through FDA regulations and labor laws (like not pissing and crapping in the fields as they are harvested) if grown, made, manufactured, produced here on US soil that isnt exempt from our Constitution and Federal laws (such as our territories).
Since chickens are once again part of the issue and kidney failure is once again the symptom/basis of the sickness and death of our pets, I can assume they are still feeding their chickens the melanin "enriched" feed (which also helps them reduce their costs for disposal of toxic waste from their cheap manufaturing of the garbage we love to buy at those discount outlets.). To think we also buy our chickens from China after sending them the baby chicks to raise. That doesnt make them any safer than the pet foods or baby formulas since they are feeding them poision to "fatten" them up.
Buy made in USA and do NOT count on an American company to make their products here. They only care about the bottom line ... and have demonstrated they do not care about US.
Only 1000 dogs have been reported sick does not necessarily mean it has anything do do with dog treats. I am a dog owner and I witness all the garbage she consumes outside of the premium dog food I feed her. The FDA cannot find any link. Considering that 2.5 million cases of food poisoning are reported in the U.S. every year, the dogs are probably sick because they ate human food!
Typical corporate behavior today for some companies; manufacture in China, use deceptive information regarding product origin and attempt to avoid dealing with the issue unless faced with a court case. It's all about maximizing profit by taking advantage of the fact that US companies operating in foreign countries are not subject to the same standards that exist in the US. Of course the increased profit is explained by the fact that workers make less per hour in China than in the US. The Chinese Government provides their health care, the cost of living is cheaper and US companies that manufacture there don't have to meet the standards that OSHA and the USEPA require in this country. When will the US Government balance the trade imbalance where companies are rewarded for manufacturing in China? This practice that could easily be remedied by rewarding companies that manufacture in the US and support the US economy with tax incentives to level the playing field but will they? It's time to contact the US House of Representatives and let them know why this issue is important to America's future.
Yeah, well even that does not always mean squat. I was buying a freeze dried dog food - Sojos - that you mix with water. The bag clearly says "Made in Minnesota". But after further research, I discovered the ingredients come from China. They ship them over to the US in bulk and then stir them together here and claim that qualifies as "made" in Minnesota/USA. Totally bogus if you ask me.
There are a lot of healthy dog treats out there. You are just not going to find in places like Walmart or other discount stores.
Lots of concern expressed here for Jerky pet treats. Check the label on Jerkey sold for human consumption. Try and find a brand of Jerky in your local market that is not made in China. With the volume of reported tainted items coming out of China, I see no reason to buy food products that are made in China.
I always figured it was because the treats are hard to digest and chew. Some of the Jerky treats in a bag have the consistency of twigs! I stopped giving my dog the bigger tougher pieces b/c they seemed to make her sick (vomiting, eating grass, gagging, etc...) Other than the really thick ones, my dog has no problem with them.
Its not just the Chinese to blame. Look at the garbage Purina, Alpo, etc. put in their dog foods. Corn, wheat, soy, cause so many issues in dogs. Better off spending good money on your dogs' food, than to be cheap about it, and then wasting money on constantly bringing your dog to vet for dry skin, allergies, infected ears, etc.
Just look at all the poisonous crap China has sent us. We had been giving our dog some of the Milo treats and other brands so this really makes me angry. They poison our kids with tainted toys, poison our pets and how can I forget? Toxic Chinese Drywall.
We bought a brand new home in 2008 filled 100% with this drywall. Bleeding sinus's, memory loss, overall body ache, you name it. We have been involved in a lawsuit for 3.5 years and we are getting screwed. Our credit is great and we are not getting even half of what it will cost to remediate our house (which is under water by $50K) so we are walking away which means foreclosure and damaged credit. We would never be able to fix it ourselves. We are innocent victims but since we live in Alabama right now the courts rule for the corporations instead of the consumers. The South is really screwed up and the Republicans are having a heyday pushing their anti-American agenda down everyone's throats. We are moving the hell out of here and I can't wait to go. Our job moved us here and it was the biggest mistake of our lives.
If the FDA were really concerned with the health consequences to animals, they would just ban these imports. But we know who they're paid by.
The same holds true for anything imported. If it can be even slightly linked to causing issues here, ban all imports until the situation is remedied. Bet your *ss the other countries would take notice then.
Amen to that. Clearly the FDA could give a rats behind about the health of our pets. They are just considered "property" and have no intrinsic value.
Now if 1,000 children had been sickened or killed - the FDA would have done something by now. But these are just dogs...so it doesn't matter.
I won't buy anymore store treats for my pets, and I threw out all the chicken jerky I had. I'll make my own from now on.
And again, nestle-purina at the fore-front of sickened and dying dogs. to he11 with china, dont buy nestle purina products!
Dont expect too many answers from your govt. concerning this. Nancy Pelosi and her husband are major shareholders and he is an executive at Del Monte. They are just in it for the money and could care less about you or your pets health. Nancy Pelosi and her husband are part of the 1% and will bury this for their greed and reputation, continueing the fraud.
This post by Obamaroid is a LIE. Pelosi does not own any stock in Del Monte:http://www.factcheck.org/2008/11/special-favors-from-nancy-pelosi/
And, of course, it is also a LIE that Nancy Pelosi's husband is an executive at Del Monte, or that he worked for Adolf Hitler or that Nancy barbecues cats.
Barbequed cat is good. They have it all the time in china...........
China does not care about us. They keep messing with us any chance they get. It's all about the money and power. Plain and simple DON'T BUY FROM CHINA !!!!! How many of our family pets and owners have to go through this evil? Really ????
I kind of think this is BS. There are over 75 million dogs in the US and are probably consuming millions of these treats. It doesn't add up. Could be anything with numbers that low, like 1,000 unrelated things. There has probably been 10,000 mysterious deaths from dogs that haven't ever eaten a chicken treat in the amount of time.
I think MSN just recycles weak stories about things people are passionate about so they can get more web traffic
Don't knowingly buy food products from China.
In case you didn't understand the previous sentence, I'll repeat it.
DON'T KNOWINGLY BUY FOOD PRODUCTS FROM CHINA.
I won't even buy a vitamin unless they can verify none of it came from China. Opurity vitamins is the only one I've found so far. Why anyone would knowing put something into their body that came from China is beyond me.
What is in this stuff? A dog can eat another dog's turds and not get sick. Filthy Chinese. Humans worse than turds.
turds are brown....chinese are yellow.......
It's most likely whatever chemical they are using to preserve it.
It is most likely melamine - same stuff they poison their own baby formula with. Melamine makes food appear to have a higher protein content than it actually does. Since commercial quality control processes test for the total nitrogen content of the proteins and not the protein itself, melamine is not readily detected. Other methods to detect melamine and other non-protein nitrogen are available, but have not been made part of routine checks.
We had to euthanize our dog in January due to renal failure after she injested tainted treats. Only four months earlier, her blood work indicated that her kidneys were fine. Please, please, please read containers and don't feed anything manufactured in China to anyone you love.
We lost a dog and a cat, both of whom were aging and weakened, to melamine doped pet food about a year and half ago. I now try to buy only American made products.
MikeyMike,
Very sorry for your loss!!
eed019 & Mikeymike - I'm so sorry, that is just so sad it breaks my heart. I cant imagine how I would feel if I lost my little Charley because of the negligence of a pet food company. Sorry for everything you both have been through.
Nestle and Del Monte are not going to do anything, until consumers make enough noise to slow their sales down, then they will act like they didn't know anything about it and will come out with pro-consumer ads about how much they care about all of our pets and would never do anything to jeopardize that special relationship. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MIGHTY DOLLAR, and until they start losing those dollars, they will just continue to deny, deny, deny.
Complain to the store manager where you find this crap. Call the manager out and give 'em a chewin' in front of other customers. Let 'em know why you're upset and what you expect the manager to do about it. Then go over the manager's head to the next biggest nametag and on up the ladder.
Write an Op-ed to your local paper about this. Call your legislators. Picket the store. Demand action. Demand they fix it!
It's your right as an American citizen!

I see all this talk about reading labels. I see people spouting "don't buy chinese". In a way, boycott DelMonte and Purina....When do people start to act. If the FDA is being defunded like someone mentioned, when do the people of America begin to stand up and do what they say? I've been reading labels for years, I don't buy what's not made in the USA, however, I will admit, I believe my car might have been made in Canada. Not sure on that one.
Someone said they don't understand why America doesn't terminate agreements to buy from China and other places. The US government is and has been supporting China for many, many years. Now we OWE them so much money. Other countries will NOT buy from the US, the US will not "return the favor" of boycotting another country (especially dirty, filthy china).
Pelosi & her husband are beginning to close shops (DelMonte Plant in Kingsburg, CA is going to close at end of summer). If you really want to make an impression, BOYCOTT their products. Hurt them in the pocketbook. Do the same to china, hurt them where it counts. And then do like JustSlapMe says, scream, holler, petition, STAND UP FOR YOUR AMERICAN rights!.
We lost a beloved 7 yr. old schnauzer to kidney failure and feel these jerky strips could have been the cause. We do not purchase anything from China . . . if you read carefully on the packaging, it will tell you where they are manufactured. We have found jerky strips, True Chews, which are manufactured here in the good old USA by Tyson Pet Products in Iowa. Their email address is: www.truechews.com and telephone number is: 877-303-WAGS. Before we discovered these at our local Pet Supplies Store, we had contacted Milo's Kitchen (parent company is Del Monte) and expressed our pleasure with their dog products because they were made in the USA with the exception of the chicken fillets and refused to purchased their chicken fillet strips because they were made in China. Their response to us was that their fillets were the highest quality and safe for our dogs.
I support Patricia Larsen's suggestion to boycott Del Monte and China . . . our dogs are members of our family and deserve to be protected from people like the Pelosi's and China.
The Chinese should eat their own poison tainted baby food, milk products and pet foods and treats. Pass the melamine. Remember they are still "THE RED COMMUNIST CHINESE. Don't you ever forget this.
They do. There's just no recourse or media coverage there when your child or pet dies from it.
I stopped buying the duck and chicken jerkies from Petsmart (Made in China) about six months ago. I hate that because the dogs did like the treats and it smells almost good enough for me to eat. I now give them Jack Link beef jerkies which is much more expensive.
I used to use the Canyon Creek, my dog went APE for them. The Jack Links are full of sodium though. Just cook a chicken, and keep the chucks frozen, and refridge small amounts at a time, its not hard, its cheap, and nothing in it to make them sick.
Jack Link is loaded with nasty preservatives. If you wish to do right by your dog, go to dogfoodanalysis dot com
I buy small marrow bones in my grocery store, freeze them and give them to my dog right out of the freezer. He goes crazy for them. Freezing will kill any bacteria just like boiling them will but they're much neater and don't get greasy this way. He'll go off in a corner with one of these for a hour or two and be in heaven. This is the by far the best treat I've found for him.
Buy a dehydrator & make your own treats that BOTH you & your pets can safely eat!
Seriously! If a product does not clearly state that it is manufactured or baked or whatever in the United States, then be wary. I am sorry for those manufacturers who are honorable; however, the crap coming out of China seems like massive toxic testing. Buy Local. Buy Fresh. Learn about sustainable living.
There is only one reason a company wouldn't clearly mark that their product was made in the US.
I saw an article about this months ago, I had bought treats by Waggin Train, I had only given my dog a few over a span of 4 months. I contacted Waggin Train and asked if they wanted me to send what I purchased to them for research, and their response was "there is nothing wrong with our product and is totally safe for your dog." I'm not taking a chance, and even though they would not offer me my money back, I threw them out. Now I'm glad I didn't listen to them and did what was good for my dog.
WELCOME TO CORPORATE AMERIKA
JUST PAY THE CORPS WHILE YOU DIE...................................
STOP PAYING FEDERAL TAXES!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how everyone is saying don't buy products from China. Uh...tell that to the fat cats getting rich off of importing questionable goods. They could care less...they're dogs eat Chef Michaels
Hey jones, IF you STOP buying products made in China then there is NOTHING to import. AND it is "their" not "they're".
LOL, I hope so...Chef Michaels = Purina = Nestle
Business's import cheap goods from China because that is what consumers demand with their shopping habits. When consumers choose the cheap treats from China over the more expensive ones made in the US which do you think they will stock?
Actually, Mr. Lanning, I think Jones' use of the conjunction "they're" makes perfect sense. It just needed to be punctuated.
They could care less...they're dogs. Eat Chef Michaels. ;-)
A point of clarification for all you fear mongering, Red Scare throw backs. China's communism is politically based - not economically based. It's one of the most lucrative gifts for U.S. multinationals ever. Corporate America finally got their 19th century working conditions and wages back, but with 21st century profit margins. They just had to exploit East Asian markets to get it. But what the hell they're only people, right?
I cook fresh chicken and brown rice for my dogs. They love carrots, broccoli, green beans. I've been giving them Blue Tranquility Jerky Chicken, Blue Mini bars. Must go read the ingredients and where it is made. Thought i had but will confirm. I've never given them traditional dog food other than dog bones for their teeth and the snacks mentioned above.
Chef Michaels is NOT GOOD PET FOOD. In fact, It is CRAP!
Started giving our dog baby carrots. He loves them! Now hopefully they don't start importing those from China as well.
Try sweet potatoes, apples, bananas, etc. as dogs like them as well. Try ZiwiPeak air dried, all natural venison, venison & fish and lamb. It's from New Zealand and our dog loves it.
Some of these 'baby carrots' have been found to be not so healthy . . . bleach used to clean them.
bobbski, not all dogs like bananas as none of mine would ever eat them but i have one who will eat ..........onions? buy a dehydrator (or use broil on your oven) and make your own. that's what i started doing around christmas. for 2 bucks less than a bag of waggin train chicken jerky(14 bucksat my local sam's) i can fill a gallon size bag with homemade jerky treats for my dogs which is about 25% more than you would get with waggin tain.
set your oven or dehydrator on 160 degrees.
cut the chicken into 1/4 inch thick strips.
lay flat on a cookie sheet sprayed with pam.
broil or dehydrate for 3 hours.
flip and go another 3 hours.
check for any give or soft spots in the meat as that indicates moisture is still in them and if there is any broil until it's gone.
let the treats cool and put them in a ziplock bag and store in your fridge or freezer based on when you will be using them. they can be stored for up to a month in the freezer before losing their freshness.
If you're buying from China, remember that profits are always considered before anything else. To the Chinese, quality is a foolish American notion and has nothing to do with business goals. Chinese operate from the perspective of how little you will accept for the agreed upon price. Caveat emptor.
Reminds me of Star Trek..the Ferengi. Profit before all else.
Unfortunately not limited to China....take a look around the US of A.
True. Just consider the safety of our food chain before government involvement (The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, for those who want to know more). The right wing wants to dismantle government regulation because they claim that the market will ensure food (and product) safety, but at the same time they also want to limit lawsuits, the threat of which helps to keep companies in line. There's nothing like a $100 million dollar award to keep one's mind focused on food safety. If the right-wing gets its way, our system will look more and more like the Chinese.
Damn MSNBC, it must be a slow news day. This story has been out for 6-7 months and you are just getting around to it. I guess you don't have any important propaganda today, huh. I stopped feeding my dog this junk when the report first came out and he is doing fine. However, I hope dog owners sue the hell out of those American Corporations peddling this junk.
And yet you took the time to read the story and comment anyway. You must like to complain otherwise I cant understand why you would waste your time.
Bill, I've read about this three times now, all from MSNBC. They're just keeping up with the story as it escalates. Chill.
Buy American ! Buy Local ! Support America’s middle class ! Support Women’s rights ! Support Civil Rights ! Protect God’s Green Earth ! Vote Democrat ! Obama/Biden 2012 !
You were good until the vote obama/biden. obama isn't for American business. You're contradicting yourself.
Amen to that, Gulf Coast Tan!! A vote for Obama/Biden brings a LOT more in from China. Obama is for Obama, period.
And who is for you? Not the Repubs.
Vote GOP and you can kiss the FDA good-bye. Think corporate America will protect you? Where did Romney put his pup again?
Think again and learn - vote OUT the GOP!
I agree with Gulf Coast Tan up until he said Obama isn't for American Business. But I'll be voting GREEN! Thank you.
Last time I checked, American businesses weren't for American businesses. What part of American-corporations-exporting-our-jobs-overseas don't you people get? Seriously, you're all bitching and moaning about China and then waxing all patriotic about "American" businesses.
China didn't decimate the labor force in this country, corporate raiders like Romney did! Get a clue!
Bake yourself some PETFRESH doggie cookies. Fresh refrigerated dough in the pet isle. I can tell you first hand dogs love them AND they are safe!
Where are they made? Website? Sold?
jb, just make your own chicken jerky. here's how
set your oven or dehydrator on 160 degrees.
cut the chicken into 1/4 inch thick strips.
lay flat on a cookie sheet sprayed with pam.
broil or dehydrate for 3 hours.
flip and go another 3 hours.
check for any give or soft spots in the meat as that indicates moisture is still in them and if there is any broil until it's gone.
let the treats cool and put them in a ziplock bag and store in your fridge or freezer based on when you will be using them. they stay good for a month in the freezer.
also, fyi, i use the nesco american harvest dehydrator 1000 watt. it's nice and quiet and you can add layers to it so you can do more jerky at one time. you can have up to 20 trays on it but it comes with only 4. i have 6 right now and can do 11 chicken breats at one time that way. i only use it though cause having my oven tied up for 6+ hours doesn't really work for me but broiling is just as good if that's not a problem for you. have a good day.
Stick with Purina - an American company that pays it's taxes.
Purina = Nestle which is Swiss and has a USA division.
Acutally you should make your own treats if you want to be 100% safe. That's the only way you know what really goes into what you feed your dog.
I had a Lab who had siezures every time he ate Purina. Then I fed my cat Purina and she had a siezure. To much of a coincidece.
Purina is cheap junk made for the masses. You might as well feed your dog McDonald's.
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com
Please don't advise people to feed their dogs Purina. As Skup said, it's the equivalent to McDonald's. Look at the ingredients on the back of the bag. If the first few aren't named (Lamb, Chicken, Bison, etc.)meat, or if you see meat by-products, I'd recommend avoiding that food. Go to Dogfoodanalysis.com or dogfoodadvisor.com to see reviews of every dog food.
Purina is GARBAGE!
I have 4 dogs and have been feeding them the Jerky treats for 5-6 years now. They have had exactly 0 issues with the treats. Even though I'm wary of products coming from China, I feel like American companies that make jerky treats are trying to take advantage of us consumers.
The prices from American companies producing jerky treats are more than triple the cost of the ones coming from China. I wouldn't be shocked if American companies are trying to scare us away from buying Chinese products so they can benefit.
I'm still reeling from China's purchase of America Multi-Cinema Entertainment, Inc. (AMC).
Perhaps it will be CMC now...
I couldn't figure out why our 9 y.o golden retriever stopped eating anything then I read this article. I fed her the Meijer Main Choice Sweet potato with Chicken Jerky. Found out this is a Wagon Train product.
I don't know why people don't start a twitter campaign or a face book campaign until these companies get it. We have the power but we don't use it.
What is the power we have? We have the power of the purse. Use it.
It will not take long before whomever is the target to get the message. Stop letting the companies dictate to us and start demanding accountability from them. No business = no profit. It will only take a week or two before they start seeing the impact we can all make on these business who do not do the right thing by their customers. No one can take advantage of us unless we LET them.
Stop being pushed around. If the price for something is too high, don't buy it. There is very little out there that we just can't live without so if it is too much don't buy it.
If millions did that then guess what? They will have to lower the price. If the quality is not up to snuff then don't buy it until it is. Stop with just taking it and make these companies EARN your business. The old fashioned way. Put out a quality product at a fair price. What a concept for a business.
I agree. When this story first came out, I posted it to Facebook and stopped buying ANY treats made in China. Many of my friends commented on my Facebook post, thanking me and telling me they would not buy Chinese-made treats, either.
Well, get it going - AGAIN! Post all the name brands of this Chinese crap that you find that are killing your pets.
If they live long enough, your pets will thank you for it!
I purchase some of the Milo treats which claimed to be made in America because I was unable to get to my local pet store and my two best friends became ill. I will never give them anything other than wellness or blue Buffalo since I can trace the manufacturing which is made in American of course it cost more but the thought of losing my 2 friends to some cheap product from china is not worth it. Currently I only order my products from made in America it cost more but at least I am supporting our economy
Idiots buying dog treats\food made in China, if you can't figure it out make your own cheap , easy and fast.
Feed your dogs home cooked food like rice, fish or USDA beef, vegetables and a multivitamin. I have done that since the last pet food scare and my dog has thrived. Instant rice, a microwave and frozen vegetables make it fairly easy to do and there is less waste to pick up in the yard. No Chinese dog food firm will ever care for your pets health in the same way as you do. The only treat I have ever trusted is Milk Bone, as they claim to be using the same recipe for over 100 years, or the home cooked variety. How many food related scares will it take for people to stop buying Chinese food products?
More jobs to china, huh? Good Business. Make these companies pay for the problems they caused the animal owners, then see if thery're making a profit. Better yet, boycott them. Let them lose their ases and maybe they will make the products in the US!
If the laws were changed to allow for emotional damages, the pet food companies would clean up their act FAST! Who would want to face 1,000 lawsuits from grieving pet owners, knowing that most members of the juries will have pets of their own?
you can buy them at wal mart!
WAKE UP WAL MART, CHINA IS POISONING US AND OUR DOGS!
NO MORE 'MADE IN CHINA'!
"Made in China" enough said.
look at the packaging and it says MADE IN CHINA......... STOP buying this poison
One of my dogs is allergic to chicken-used to be a hassle and now I'm grateful that she is.
