Salmonella-linked sushi toll climbs to 316 in 26 states

The toll from latest outbreak of salmonella-spiked sushi has climbed to 316, according to a new government report.

And that number may be a huge underestimate, since food safety officials estimate that for every salmonella infection they hear about, 29.3 go unreported. Using that multiplier, the total number of tuna-sickened Americans may be closer to 9,575.

CDC

Tainted tuna scraped from the backbone of the fish has been implicated in salmonella outbreak that has sickened hundreds across 26 states and Washington, D.C.

The outbreak has been widespread, with people sickened in 26 states as well as the District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far, 304 people have been diagnosed the rare salmonella Bareilly strain, while another 12 have become ill with salmonella Nchanga, the CDC reported.

While 37 have been hospitalized, no deaths have been attributed to the tainted tuna thus far, according to the CDC.
The toll could grow; illnesses that occurred after April 17 might not have been recorded yet because of the lag between when people get sick and when they report to health officials.

Agency investigators determined that the likely culprit was frozen raw yellow fin tuna, known as Nakaochi Scrape, made by Moon Marine USA Corporation. Government labs have isolated Salmonella from 96 percent of the samples taken from intact yellow fin tuna scrape produced by Moon Marine. In April, Moon Marine recalled 58,828 pounds of the frozen tuna product. It wasn't for sale to individual customers, but may have been used to make sushi, sashimi, ceviche and similar dishes in restaurants and grocery stores.

I don't care how sophisticated it is eating this junk. NOBODY should EVER eat raw fish. Maybe years and years ago it was safe, but NOT in today's market.

Other than fresh cooked fish (broiled, fried, baked however you like 'em) there are only two civilized ways of consuming our finny friends. 1)pickled herring in wine sauce, many very good brands but you should at least be able to get Vita. 2)kippered or smoked herring sometimes in tomato sauce. Most of this is imported from countries with strict food processing laws. Try Apel herring in tomato sauce from Germany (if you must have something from an axis power). Whole foods carries a low sodium brand. A bit pricy but very good. Trader Joes carries a less expensive brand with more salt. Still a good deal and good taste. As for those of you who must east raw fish prepared god knows how then........die yuppie larval scum. You deserve the results of your risky behavior and poor food choice. Interesting that only DC was mentioned in the article and not one of the 26 states involved. Well I guess the next headline will read ATTEMPTED POSOINING OF CONGRESS!

I have more confidence in Sushi bars than I do in places like Burger King and the like. 60 years old and the only time I ever got sick was from a Burger Kings food. Myself and about 100 other people got sick that day.

All that tuna will be floating around for some time to come....and you can bet your bottom dollar unscrupulous restaurants and grocery stores will continue to use it to save bucks!

                  Beware sushi eaters....

fyi - this is probably what becomes the "spicy tuna" or "spicy salmon" product in sushi. kind of like ground beef. its been ground up from the sometimes the not so nicest part of the animal.

better choice is to get the cuts of tuna, salmon, other fish. more like a steak. steak is more okay to eat not fully cooked than ground beef.

know your product. the shushi restaurant wants you to order the ground up stuff, its cheaper for them, more profits.

                        To whom it may concern,

I have found out that salmonella is a sickness that comes from rotten flesh (Meat, chicken ,pork , fish or any other animal or fish). My experience has been that I have been having a glass of wine with my meal and somehow it sanitizes whatever I ate and did not have any bad effect or being sick. So, please take it with a grain of salt I am an individual that has experienced this ,some other people might be affected in another way.So try that glass of wine with your main meal and see if the meal you are eating is rotten, you can test with someone that is eating the same dish but no wine and see if there is any difference, that is that person will have puked all the dinner out after about six hours. Bon Appetit.

Sushi does not equal Raw Fish. Sushi by itself is just rice, vinegar and sugar. Raw fish is just One of many toppings used on Sushi. Eating Raw Fish doesn't make you uncivilized.
