16 now sick from salmonella in dry dog food; recall expands

Two more people have become ill after being exposed to salmonella-tainted dry dog food, bringing the total to 16, federal health officials reported Friday

That includes one more case in the United States, where people in nine states have been sickened. Another case was detected in Quebec, Canada. Five people have been hospitalized.

All of the illnesses follow a recall of at least 11 brands of dry dog food manufactured at a Gaston, S.C., plant operated by Diamond Pet Foods of Meta, Mo. They include the store brand pet food sold by Costco, Kirkland Signature and Kirkland Signature Domain.

Lab tests have confirmed that those sick were infected with a rare strain of salmonella Infantis, which was detected only after a routine test of dry dog food revealed contamination, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Public health investigators used DNA fingerprints of the bacteria to identify past cases of illness linked to the outbreak. People infected with the outbreak strain became sick between Oct. 8, 2011 and April 22, 2012.

Cases included three each in North Carolina and Missouri, two each in Ohio and Pennsylvania and one each in Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey and Virginia.

Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily expanded its recall of certain brands of dry dog and cat food manufactured at the South Carolina site between Dec. 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 because of potentially salmonella contamination. The federal Food and Drug Administration posted recalls as well, here.

People can become sick by handling the tainted pet food or through contact with an animal that has eaten the contaminated food.

Consumers should discard any of the recalled product. Those who think they may have become sick after contact should consult a health care provider.

Consumers should be sure to wash their hands after feeding or handling a pet, or after picking up after an animal. Cat litter boxes should be scooped daily.

Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramping 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness can last up to a week and most people recover without treatment. In some cases, severe diarrhea can require treatment in a hospital.

you can tell the standards are high if the company has a recall at times, they do say which bags are bad so I go by that. I am feeding naturals by diamond and my bags are not affected by the recall and I will continue to feed my show dogs that.. I will feed purina sometimes too but they also have had massive recalls and dogs have died

So much for trying to buy American made food to avoid the cheap Chinese made garbage that poisons our pets. Seems American companies do that just fine as well.

I have been feeding my dog & 2 cats Kirkland Sig (Costco) exclusively for the last few years since I wanted them to have a healthier diet free of unecessary ingredients. They have never had any problems while on it. I, however, was sick twice at the end of last year...each bout lasting maybe two days. I did not visit my doctor because it did not last long and chalked it up to food poisoning, but now I am definitely wondering if this recall was the cause. Funny though how this is the first I am hearing about it...especially considering Costco tracks purchases. Even if my particular bags were not included in the recall, it would have been nice to be informed and given the choice of whether or not to continue feeding it.

      flower-

Food poisoning is salmonella or e.coli or Campylobacter(among a few others), so it definitely could have been this.

How can people get salmonella from dog food?

          Reply#31 - Sat May 12, 2012 12:40 PM EDT

Not for nothing, but do people really not wash their hands after feeding their dogs? The food stinks, im far from a clean freak, but how do you not wash that stink off.

Tara, Since you posted your support of "lifesabundance" twice, you must be an "expert" on dog food! You need to do some homework on the labeling and analysis of dog food, in this country. The ingredients are listed on the label by the percentage of the product from most to least. If a meat is listed as the first ingredient, then there HAS to be other "fillers" to make the protein content work. You see meat or meat products have a protein content of 60% or higher. In order to end up with a dog food that is 21-28% protein there must be other ingredients of lesser protein content. It is common to use vegetable powder, grain screenings, wheat hulls, rice hulls, soybean hulls, almond hulls, etc as they are low in protein, high in carbohydrates and cheap as dirt. The highest quality dog foods contain only a few ingredients and balance the blend with them. All of this is an thirty year old sales and marketing tool used by every hustler and scam artist that has ever sold dog food. I am a researcher, that has worked in this area for forty years. I could care less what brand you use, but keep to the facts!

One of the foods was Taste of the Wild which is a GRAIN FREE food which has none of those fillers...or so they say..BUT who will believe anything the DIAMOND company says!!! I pay 50.00 a bag for a food I thought was a high grade food!! Now...it's in the garbage!!!! No more DIAMOND FOOD for my girls...there are many other GRAIN FREE foods out there...but now I will search each company's recall history!!!!

That's pretty damn scary, as a good uncle I eat dry dog food to gross the nephews out.

We should care as much about how we feed our children as much as we are concerned about dog food. 10 more years and all human processed food will be sugars, salt, and fat.

I feed my dog Pedigree dry food mixed with a quarter lb. hamburger meat and a half cup cooked rice. He's a happy well adjusted sixty lb. pit bull. Please no jokes about pitties never being well adjusted, he considers such talk as racial profiling.

MY 3 YEAR OLD DOG BEAR GOT VERY SICK FROM EATING THIS RECALLED FOOD THIS MONTH AND WOULD HAVE DIED IF I HADN'T TAKEN HIM TO THE VET!!!! I am going to battle COSTCO on this till the end. The UPC on the bag of food I have matches with the bad batch. They said they will reimburse for the food but not the $350 vet bill!! I am pissed and plan on fighting this!!!

FDA Inspection Report released. Plant was unsanitary, duct tape repairs and NO microbiological analysis conducted.

You should battle with the Diamond Pet food company...not Costco. Call their 800# & YES it was the companie with the melamine in the dog food that killed hundreds of dogs years ago... My Taste of the Wild Food was dumped as soon as I realized!! No more DIAMOND foods for my girls!! Sure Slamonella isn't quite as big a deal as DEATH....BUT you can sure rack up the vet bills!!!

This is the reason I do not feed my dogs ANY commercial dog food! I have them on a raw meaty bones diet and they are healthy and happy! Look up Tom Lonsdale...he is an Australian vet who promotes a healthy diet for dogs that you can get at any grocery store. rawmeatybones dot com is a good place to find more information out about how you can feed your dogs naturally with out having to worry about commercial dog food recalls! I have been doing this for 9 months and will never ever purchase commercial dog food again! Look up what is actually used to keep the dry kibble "fresh"...preservatives that include the pet safe antifreeze! Really? Gross and dangerous!
