Dozens of Kansas high school students and chaperones were being treated for symptoms of food poisoning Wednesday at a hospital in Mount Pleasant, Pa., after a band trip to New York, the hospital said.
About 160 students and chaperones made the trip on three buses to New York from De Soto High School, just across the Kansas border from Kansas City, Mo. They were returning home Wednesday morning when about 40 students, ages 13 to 18, and 10 adults fell ill.
The students and chaperones were being treated at Excela Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, NBC station WPXI of Pittsburgh reported. The Pennsylvania and New York state health departments were both investigating because the members of the caravan became ill after having eaten at an Italian restaurant in New York City on Tuesday evening.
"The common factor seems to be the chicken Parmesan," Alvie Cater, a spokesman for the De Soto School District, told the Kansas City Star.
"Roughly 25 were treated at the hospital, but more than that actually displayed symptoms," Cater said. "We're looking at up to 50 that displayed symptoms, but some of them were not severe at all."
The hospital said most of the victims were treated for severe dehydration and were expected to be back on the road later Wednesday.

Usually food poisoning presents from both ends
You ain't kidding. I had E. coli once, and let me tell you, once is enough. I was sitting on the toilet puking into a trash can for three days. And trust me, vomiting when you have diarrhea can be disastrous. Back of the toilet ended up looking like a splash guard at a Hershey factory more than once.
Jeff is exactly right. I got it at a Hardee's in Sedalia Mo. Was driving up to play music at a friends party. We rehearsed about 15 minutes and I said I didn't feel to good and went to the bathroom. Lucky the sink wasn't to far from the john. I DID play though. Stomach felt like it had lit charcoal in it for a couple of days.
We are the wealthiest country on the planet - well, almost - and the most abundant food supply, and we cannot safeguard the quality of our food. We read daily about tainted everything - from ground meat to restaurant food to baby food. Our food and beverage workers need to get smart and pay attention . . .. . The government seems to be powerless to control the standards of our food supply. Another good reason to consider going veg. Nobody ever got sick from a carrot. Part of the problem is our dependence on processed and prepared foods, instead of using fresh, local foods, prepared from scratch in our own kitchens.
Actually, several people got sick from cantalopes last year.

Good point - where did the cantaloupes and spinach and cherries come from . . . .? USA or imported - ? Also some imported oranges are now turning up with pesticides that are not allowed in the USA - it pays to read the labels - on everything . . .. .
I believe the cantaloupes came from Colorado. And if I remember correctly, the spinach involved in the last large outbreak was from California.

It's not about where it comes from, necessarily. It's how the food is handled. Thanks to factory farming, both meat and produce standards are hard to regulate, since so many people handle your food before it gets to you. And this goes for the US as well as imported goods.
Buy local if you can, folks! I get my produce from an organic, nearby farm. The food comes out of the ground, passes through *maybe* two hands, and lands on my table less than a day later. It's the only way to cut out all the middle men and possible foodborne illness.
The chicken may not be fully cooked or it has germ. Or the cheese is expired. And it may be the poor food handling and unclean utensils.
It is glad that there is no injury and no death.
And I bet the resturant was passed by the City of New York Food Inspectors with a 100% It has to be the Chicken cause the sauce rarely contains any bad stuff because it is so acidic..USDA inspected of course!
The USDA can inspect all they want, if some @!$%#s don't know how to keep the meat cold, keep from cross-contamination and use the meat in a reasonable amount of time it is their fault not the inspectors. They don't watch the meat from inspection to use. The restaurant owners need to take responsibility if it turns out to be them and change the way they handle, use and prepare food.
The illegal alien kitchen workers are probably at fault.

actually I am surprised that more people don't get food poisoning; I mean how many of us believe that all employees wash their hands after going to the bathroom and how many employees sneeze all over the food- pretty yucky thought---ick
Neither one of those things contribute to what we typically call "food poisoning".
Ok so what exactly was the cause of the food poisoning? If they were treated at the hospital then the hospital must have diagnosed the cause, because i know from experience hospitals wont provide treatment without a diagnosis first.
They did have a diagnosis--food poisoning. Doctors don't need to know what caused it to recognize and treat it. The hospital isn't going to let 50 people get dehydrated and suffer while they run tests on every single food item in the kitchen.
If everyone who ate the same thing is firing out both ends, they can pretty much narrow it down to food poisoning, especially if it's chicken.
Could be the tomato sauce on the chicken that went bad, as well as the chicken itself. I've worked in many restaurants growing up, and it's amazing how people handle food that others eat. Could be the food was initially OK, but if the hands that prepare the food are contaminated, then the batch of food becomes tainted. In any event, this could be a serious blow to that restaurant.

Lol I was wondering the same thing. I sure hope that restaurant reaches out and refunds the money spent eating there. One or two people getting sick? Ok that's unfortunate but THAT many, there's something definitely wrong.

I ate chicken parmigiana at our local Olive Garden and felt ill halfway through dinner, didn't finish eating my meal...unusual for me. About one-half hour upon returning home, I was dizzy and shaking. When I went to the hospital, I was asked if I was throwing up or had diarrhea. I did not, but my GI tract has not been right since. You may present with certain symptoms, but not always. Every body is different.
Mistake number 1 was eating at Olive Garden..
The question about local food or imported- the way people have forgotten to wash their hands after using the toilet, yes, native born Americans, it isn't any wonder. Just visit a public bathroom and stay in a stall and notice how many walk out without washing. It isn't automatic in their minds anymore.
Release the name of the restaurant so other poor souls will know to stay away from it!
