Are med students turning to prostitution to pay tuition?

By MyHealthNewsDaily Staff

An increasing portion of students in the United Kingdom looking for a way to pay for their tuition are turning to prostitution, according to a new paper by a British medical student.

The problem may be particularly acute among medical students, who generally go to school longer, accrue more debt and have less time for paid employment, according to the paper by Jodi Dixon, who is studying at the University of Birmingham.

Dixon pointed to a study of about 300 British university students, in which 10 percent reported knowing a student who had worked as a prostitute or escort in 2010. That's up from about 6 percent in 2006, and 4 percent in 2000, Dixon said, a rise that coincided with an increase in college tuition fees.

"With escalating debts, students in the United Kingdom may view prostitution as an easy way to get rich quick," Dixon wrote in her article, published today (Feb. 28) in journal Student BMJ.

Some consider prostitution their only choice for paying for their education, "which I think is awful; I think it’s a shame," Dixon said, though she said she can understand why people would arrive at that conclusion.

In the UK, the act of prostitution per se is not illegal, but related activities are, including soliciting sex.

The English Collective of Prostitutes, an organization that offers support for sex workers, has received an increased number of calls from students considering sex work and has medical students within its network, Dixon said. Jobs in retail stores and bars that students might take instead are increasingly scarce and offer low pay, the ECP says.

While the ethical implications of soon-to-be doctors working as prostitutes are unclear, "what is unacceptable is a student being forced into prostitution out of financial desperation," Dixon said.

It's not clear whether a similar problem exists in other countries. In 2008, a French student published an autobiography of her time spent as a prostitute to fund her education. And a French student union has claimed that as many as 40,000 students work as prostitutes, but this is difficult to prove, Dixon said.

The United States also has seen a rise in medical tuition fees. The average medical student graduates with more than $140,000 in debt, according to 2007 data from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Prostitution is illegal in all states expect Nevada, which allows licensed brothels.

Can you imagine going in to heart bypass surgery, looking up at the surgeon as the anesthesia is starting to take affect, and thinking (but not being able to talk), "OMG, I had my way with that woman and now she's going to be operating on my heart!"

Have you not looked at Ultimate Fight? One of the fighters, who is heterosexual, did gay porn (insertive and receptive) to pay the tuition. We're living in a world where having a degree also means HIV.

Imagine in the future: questions like "Did you use protection while earning your way through college?" will be commonplace.

          Massive Cut in Britain

Government funding for higher education in Britain is to be cut by 40 percent over four years, suggesting that public funding for teaching in the arts, humanities and social sciences may come to an end.

The Comprehensive Spending Review unveiled Wednesday includes a reduction in the higher education budget of £2.9 billion – from £7.1 billion to £4.2 billion – by 2014-5.

Britain is a hellhole and a police state. It also has a tremendous amount of violence and violent crime. London has higher crime rates than many third world cities. The country is a dump ruled by a few high level financiers, defence contractors and a nasty royal family (that pretends to have no power). They have cameras and speakers on every corner, surveillance on every "subject", and they have cut most of the social benefits that the British "subjects" have supposedly paid for via sky high taxes. Britain should be conquered and run by the US (that's how bad it is- even the US is better). Think about it: when was the last time you heard of anyone wanting to move there? Or start a business there? The only thing they are good for is using their idiot bankers to hide money for the world's corrupt (ahem...London banking anyone?)

Doesn't surprise me. Wouldn't surprise me to see more American students doing the same thing. At $30K plus/term for just classes and student loans over 10% if you add the "fees" students can't afford to survive. Working your way through med school is much more difficult than working your way through an MBA and during some terms it's impossible to work.

          Prostitution should be LEGAL.

If a boxer can beat the crap out of each other for cash........

Women should have control over their own bodies!

I mean if they can have an ABORTION legally,

they should be able to sell their services just like they do when they clean houses or do massages or work at the hospital.

Most liberal women are against prostitution........WHY? Because they want to control men........prostitution would eliminate the monopoly women have over men. It also would provide a cheaper option.

Real men don't let what's in a woman's pants control them, and they can usually get it for free too. ;)

Prostitution preys on women in desperation. Most people refrain from prostitution not because it is illegal, but because is playing Russian roulette with your life- health wise and mentally. Desperate women are more likely to play this game - illegal or not.

Surley most of us are not ok with men being allowd to take advantage of poor desperate women in this fashion.

Prostitution is legal in most European countries, and they have a much lower incidence of STD's, drug use, and crime. Where as, when you treat it as a crime, all these other issues come up. Quit being a prude. Sex is fun, and if you can make money at it, who the heck has a right to tell you no.

Stupid laws, like prohabition . Yeah, that worked well.

Regulate it, require regular doctor visits, and tax it like any other service.

I guess you must be projecting. What it sounds like you're saying is that if women don't want *you* controlling *them*, obviously it must be because *they're* trying to control *you*.

Which is utter poppycock. So to speak.

um ok maybe with someone you care about or even for some with people they don't care about but often prostitues are abused. Think about who has to pay for sex and you can probably realize it would not be fun.

These figures are rather skewed. What if it was the same prostitute student these 10 percent knew? That wouldn't necessarily mean any increase from a 6 percent of prostitutes... just an increase of people who knew prostitutes..

Well I'm sure that everyone on here assumes that once a med student gets out of school they will instantly become 'rich' (as all doctors certainly are) and will be able to pay back those student loans. Oh wait...I forgot...they also have to pay mortgage on their home or rent on an apartment, gas, a car payment, malpractice insurance (which is 10 to 100K dollars a year depending on their specialty), medical supplies, employee salaries, office supplies, medical equipment, utilities, food and clothes for a family, etc. Well, so much for being a rich doctor. My first year as a physician I made 18K. My wife was a nurse. She made 20K. Anyone who thinks doctors don't deserve what they get paid should sign up for medical school or STFU.
