Deadly shoulder massager relaxes, strangles

The ShoulderFlex massager was recalled this summer following the death of one woman, but it is still available for sale at some online sites.

If you think you’ve found the perfect gift for Grandma, and it happens to be a ShoulderFlex massager, buy her something else quick. It turns out to be a device that can lull users into a relaxed state -- and then strangle them.

The Food and Drug Administration issued an alert on Wednesday warning that hair and necklaces can get caught in the massager and cause strangulation. One person has died and another nearly did, according to the FDA.

Dr. Michelle Ferrari-Gegerson, a 37-year-old Florida woman, was found dead by her husband last Christmas Eve after her leather necklace got tangled in the device, reported the Miami Herald.

“The ShoulderFlex Massager poses serious risks,” said Steve Silverman, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, in a statement. “Consumers should stop using this device, health care providers should not recommend it to their patients and businesses should stop distributing and selling the device.”

The device was recalled in August, but the manufacturer, King International, went out of business and the FDA discovered that it didn’t properly alert stores that sell the massager. A quick Internet search reveals that the product is still available at several online web sites.

The FDA is so concerned about the device that it recommends not just throwing it away, but dismantling it before you do so that no one else could ever use it. “The massage fingers should be removed and disposed of separately from the device,” according to the alert. “The power supply should be disposed of separately, as well.”

Why would anyone in their right mind leave a necklace on during a neck massage is silly. I've been told by massage therapist to remove my chain from around my neck befog they even start with a neck massage on me.

Do these companies even do test runs in their inventions and thongs like this. it seems like they should if they aren't. This is a design flaw that needs fixing, not forced out of business.

Couldn't she have at least pulled the power plug from the wall on it.

Sorry but I want to read about the person that "almost got hurt" ...not the "husband who discovered his wife dead" routine. There's not enough solid evidence about this machine and the so-called dangers it poses.

Even the most basic facts evade msnbc writers. Unless this apparatus can move on its own, it isn't a "shoulder massager". It's a NECK massager. Look at the picture, imbeciles!

Hey, if we can make a safety device - airbags - that decapitate children in a 10-mph collision, we can certainly make a massaging device that strangles people with their own bling. It was only a matter of time.

The massager should be the a villain in the next James Bond movie. Lulls you into a false sense of security and at the last minute chokes you with your own necklace. It'd be perfect.

Gee... that is kind of overkill isn't it? I would sure hate it if I just threw my shoulder massager away and someone picked it out of the trash and used it and was injured. Or if I took it apart and threw all the parts away in the same garbage can and someone who REALLY needed a shoulder massage picked the parts out of the can and reassembled it...

really? do you have any evidence at all to prove that? or are you just pulling it out of your arse?

looking at the picture of the device, there is no obvious way for hair and jewelry to get caught and KILL you.

clearly some people just love to blame the victim and can't possibly accept that "personal responsibility" includes taking responsibility for a DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!

                @Sally,

i think it is unfair of you to delete posts, rather than collapse them.... i mean if you ban or block someone, i also see it is because you personally do not agree with the comment. isnt that bias, and against freedom of speech?

personally i would like to know what some of these so called comments are, because i read a couple of them today you banned, after i read them, and i dont remember reading anything that was COC/COH related....

sorry jane, but one thing you NEVER do on newsvine is deathwish another, and doing so for the president or any person in office will result in both being banned and having it reported to secret service. you should also read the COH (code of honor) , rules for posting on newsvine. breaking those rules result in increasingly long suspensions ultimately ending in being banned

i kind of find doubt, if he/she had said something to the effect, had mailed the Bush family one of these or something to that effect, it would result in anything less than a vote up... guess is who you like and dont like, rather CoH. i read the comment, in no way was it a death wish from the way i read it, rather sarcasm... believe it or not, there is a distinct difference. hard to tell with the delete however isnt it? Yet even tho this was one comment, i have seen more than this one treated the same way... its personal prefrence, nothing more, nothing less from my POV.... those are still part of the Freedom of America yes? or is it a false sence of security like freedom of speech, and being able to speak what one thinks in seriousness, or in jest[sarcasm].

I understand your point, but you also have to understand newsvine's position, if one of these people that obviously hates the president actually did try to do something after making what looks like a threat, newsvine could be held for some responsibility

well on the defense of putting this out there... saying you sent someone something is not a threat, it would be an action already taken. Looking into what i had read, can be safe to guess, beyond any doubt, being the article was posted, then a comment after being what was done, it is pretty simple... there is a difference between being a cocky wise-a$$, and making a threat or insult... it was more of being the 1st by all means vs the latter.

i do however think, due to i would have to lean on party lines, and being racist... some feel they had been done up, and went to cry about it.

i understand yes, threats need to be taken seriously, but there was no threat, and i read it 2 times.

also another reason why i do not comment on this as much as i used to... it's not near as unbiased as NV likes to make themselves out to be. if something can be construded into something it is not, not just the staff(?) on NV, but the posters as well more so tend to make what kind of conclusion they can to get some kind of crap going... and mostly it has to do with race over anything..

none the less.... Meg should be re-instated, because i highly doubt the SS of the US Gov has by any means wasted the gas, or time to bother, because there was no threat, other than mabe laughing themselves to death after they recieved this so called.... "report to the authorities". if anything i would guess that would be it if it wasnt tossed out as a complaint from a crack-pot. Not calling Sally a crack-pot, but how i would have viewed it in the original text.

Can't see what purpose would be served by reinstating any person who expresses a wish for the death of this or any other POTUS. Not only is it far outside the Code of Honor, it has nothing to do with "free speech" as no one has an absolute right to have his or her viewpoint posted here on this privately-owned site where people are allowed to post in accordance with the Terms of Service of which the CofH is part. It's rather like making a joke about hijacking at your local airport. Do that and then explain to the officers that it was all a joke and cite your right to free speech and see how far that gets you.

Golly, don't get your knickers in a twist over Chinese-made products. Sheesh, just because the Chinese tend to overestimate the intelligence of the average American consumer and omit warnings of obvious risks in the product instructions. A lot of products made overseas are based on American designs, so maybe you should direct your rage at American manufacturers for outsourcing production.

k harlan, King International is/was an Oregon based company. My big problem with China is: on goods imported from China into the USA, they pay a 2% duty. On goods imported from the USA into China, we pay a 47% duty. See a problem there? Tit for tat. of course a 47% duty on Chinese goods would put Wal Mart out of business in two months. ..... I love it when a plan comes together.

Oldman Young - why are you blaming the Chinese. If someone from another country came to you and asked to to manufacture a product for them and you could make a lot of money wouldn't you do it. I would. The blame is on the American Public for not heeding the warning in the early 80's about the repercussions of buying foreign products. We all have seen the bumper stickers that said save your jobs/buy American. We as a society did not heed the warning and now we are paying the price. Think about it. Take General Electric for one. We here that they don't pay taxes and I for one haven't seen any of there products that have been made in America but I bet they have sold millions of products this Christmas. We just don't learn.

I know I'm derailing the "China Sucks" train that some of you have been jumping on, but I did a Google search on King International LLC, and apparently it's based in Oregon.

So we really can't blame the Chinese for this one. Or our government, unless these massagers were hand-made by Obama. Sorry guys.

Based in Oregon, sure, but that doesn't mean it was made in Oregon. Wal-Mart is based in Bentonville, Arkansas, but very little of what they sell is made there. (Guess where most of it is made?)

Hello, anti-stupid 61. Walmart is successful because the 99% voluntarily buy the stuff it offers. If you don't like Walmart's value proposition, find somebody's you like better and buy their stuff. Better yet, if you think that you can do better, go into competition with Walmart. It's the American way.

I thought the exact opposite. I was like, "Oh god, I know it's a murderer, but I hope it's a robot." And then I saw someone died and I was like, "awwwww, never mind."

danwill, both houses control the money. In the history of the federal government, it has been the duty of the president to propose a budget. The House and senate then review, debate re- write and vote on a budget, When both Houses agree, we have a budget. in the 3 years Obama has been president, he has never submitted a budget, and neither democrats or republicans called for one. thus, we have a big part of the mess we have today. part of the reason is due to a law proposed by the democrats, and endorsed by both parties, called " pay-go". it says no new spending that is not paid for without borrowing, or adding to the deficit. Hmmmm.

If you go to Walmart, buy the generic version of most things. The generic version is more than likely made in the USA. And it costs less. Go figure. But if you need that "BRAND NAME", its probably been outsourced to maximize the return on that advertising...

Or how about the plastic manufacturers that supplied the parts, or the store that sold it, or the truck driver who delivered it, or the mint employees who printed the money used to buy it, or the..... What about personal responsibility?

It's annoying the hell out of me when people say 'do you have an instruction manual to prove it?' If the damn thing is capable of strangling someone, which I'm HIGHLY positive the producers KNEW it could, then it is obvious a warning would be on the instructions somewhere. Yes, it is sad that the person died because of it and it is in no way a laughing matter. I feel sorry for the woman. A lot of people don't bother to read the instructions or warning label on a product, they just plunge right into it thinking that by the looks of the product, it wouldn't hurt them. A terrible mistake. However, if the producers, stupidly, did NOT have the warning about it, THEN they should get the blame full force. And before people start spouting off saying we shouldn't buy things from China, I have news for you. Don't get hissy with them about it, they make most of the stuff you have in your house. Without them, you would mostly likely not have that stuff. And no, this product was not made in China. It was made in Oregon.

A lot of people on here are saying " read the manual." How about good old common sense? I have waist length hair and would never get any type of massage, mechanical or hands-on, without putting my hair up. As for necklaces, I wouldn't lie down and leave my necklace on to go to sleep or get a "regular" massage so why would I leave it on to use this device? Could the product be defective? Absolutely...but just like the woman who sued McDonalds (and won!) over hot coffee, this should be a no-brainer. Tie back your hair and take off your necklace!

Good point, sarg. One death, one near miss. Doesn't seem sufficient for banning the product. Heck, the husband could have strangled her and staged it to look like the massage thing did it.

The numerous warnings which accompanied a handheld electric hair dryer that I purchased several years ago stated: "Do not use the dryer while showering." (Seriously.) It would appear that the manufacturer of the ShoulderFlex Massager did not have as paranoid a team of staff lawyers as did the manufacturer of my hair dryer. The woman who was killed by the device was a doctor, not a lawyer. As usual, I blame the lawyers for this tragedy.

If having long hair or wearing jewelry can cause your death while using a massager, I think its best to forego the contraption and pay for a real massage from a masseur or a masseuse. It feels better anyway. This massager is used lying down. If you fall asleep and turn the wrong way in your sleep, you might just get strangled even if your hair is not in the way or you have no jewelry on. Its not worth it. Those of you either on the left or the right who have turned this argument into a political debate really need to get a life. More people die from auto accidents than from any other type of accident caused by a mechanism or product. Who do you blame for that? Henry Ford? Get a life. When people create products, they don't always learn about the dangers until later. Then of course, the profit motive sometimes causes them to keep it a secret as in the cigarette companies just to name one. There are many others. When it comes to making money there are no saints no matter your political persuasion, your nationality or your religion.

Sheila, in the case of the cigarette companies, everybody with any common sense knew that smoking was "bad for you" long before the first cigarette company, or for that matter, the first cigarette, came along. I recall that King James I attempted to outlaw smoking in England because he believed it to be a health problem some 400 years ago. Maybe Surgeon General Luther Terry made it "official" in 1964, but everybody knew that smoking was no damn good, all along. In the 1920's cigarettes had the nickname "coffin nails."

Which is funny, considering the ad campaign by Lucky Strikes during that time had advertisements featuring "physicians" recommending their cigarettes because they were "less irritating."

Well, in their defense, they did say, "less irritating", not "less toxic."

I am sorry for her family but she died because of her leather necklace which would not break when it became entangled, much like a dogs collar. We as a society cannot blame "freak" accidents or in her case (darwism at work) on others. We need to understand the goverment cannot "protect" us from everything, we have to accept personal responsibility, while this case is sad, it could have been prevented by not wearing a leather strap which had no give in it.
