A government panel wants young boys as well as girls to get the controversial HPV vaccine, in part to prevent them from spreading the sexually transmitted virus to girls.
Experts say the HPV vaccine could protect boys against genital warts and some kinds of cancers. But they also say vaccinating 11- and 12-year old boys could help prevent them from spreading the human papilloma virus to girls.

There's nothing more devastating than watching a 24-year-old woman slowly die from cervical cancer. A cancer that could have been prevented if she or her husband had been vaccinated at age 12. This happened in my family.
Now we read there's a strong connection between HPV and heart disease. Why wouldn't you want to save your son or his future wife the heartache when cervical cancer is something that can be vaccinated against.
This is, effectively, a CANCER VACCINE. We're blessed to have the technology. Please stop being so fearful. There isn't even an anecdotal connection between this vaccine and future health problems.
The fact that the shot only lasts til 27-28 makes you wonder. You also need a booster shot. I mean if your partner is a carrier - you will still have the risk after 30. It doesn't prevent all types of cervical cancer. And how do we know it prevented anything? Did those in their study trials have hpv? Did they have sex with a male who was a carrier of hpv to see if it prevented the disease? How do we know it actually prevents it? Not every woman gets cervical cancer even if they are carriers of hpv. How do we know that hpv was the culprit? Sorry. I'm not a believer. This is from the cdc website - there have thus far been 71 documented deaths from gardisal. Someone had mentioned in an earlier post for any proof of any deaths and other serious side effects. Here you go -#Serious
Maybe we should give them hormones that allows their bodies to create breast and they could compare theirs with their female counterpart. Man with the biggest breast wins just like the girls.
God, there's a lot of paranoia out there. My kids all got the vaccines that were available when they were young and they're now healthy adults. I know several people who didn't bother with some vaccines and their kids paid an awful price. One poor kid got polio. Sure the drug companies make money and maybe ther's a little hanky panky now and then. Who cares if you can save your child from a terrible life who cares if someone gets rich. Maybe they're worth it.
Due to HPV I had to battle with being precancerous for 10 years until I finally had a total hysterectomy. I can say if the vaccine was safe and we knew more about it I would have wanted to be had it before I went through all this. The constant battle was terrible. Going to the doctor and being tested every 6 months to make sure it didn't become cancer, until the one day it did. If we can make it as safe as possible I say let's vaccinate. Why would you not get your boys vaccinated? They spread the HPV just as well as girls. Why risk the cancer of any one. I believe more studies need to be done.
Senatanni I also had a total hysterectomy due to cervical cancer.I get checked every 3 months. I'am in Stage One it was caught early. My last pap smear had been normal. My two teenage granddaughters have had the vaccine. I have been with noone in almost 7 yrs. My doctor told me that this virus can lay dormate in your body for years.
Okay, don't do mammograms before X because of the anxiety of a possible false positive, don't get a PSA test because of the anxiety it might cause, but DO get a vaccine for HPV to young boys because just maybe it will protect someone from getting HPV which they may or may not have.
To all those whose screen name is Calvn - Who died and left you boss of the Internet? The "paranoid parents" who research and decide not to vaccinate their children have higher income and education than the general population. They don't listen to MSNBC or any other news outlet when told vaccines are safe. They read, talk to doctors (many), and do their own research. This issue and the studies that go along with them are like the bible. You can interpret them any way you want. I'll link to the CDC and as a parent, don't want to take the possible risks indicated on that page (GBS, blood clots, death)...of course you'll hang on to the first sentence and run with it "...cannot be used to prove a causal association"
Call me paranoid but at least I'm not naive.
A Higher income and education? what is this a d*ick swinging contest? Maybe your mother should have skipped the polio vaccine on you and let you succumb to the disease. Oh yeah you got that one didn't you... and wait... it was eradicated wasn't it? I know I only got a bachelors degree so maybe my statements are too feeble for minds such as yours, or maybe it's just because I had a measles shot.
Hats off to you- You definitely are a paranoid parent if you felt individually called out in my post. Since you did your research, my post didn't apply to you, but here's the attention you were seeking.
Good one Josh. Personal attacks always help make your point. I've had very few vaccinations and my children have had none. Let's hear how you hope they die a horrible disease too.
Honestly, my circle of friends is littered with affluent, well-educated people. I know one person who does not vaccinate her children on a traditional schedule. She did not attend college.
Anyone can do it janierock. I only used that fact to illustrate that many of us who choose not to vaccinate, don't do so without thought, research, communication, and some trepidation. Many people who think all kids should be vaccinated do so because their doctor tells them that it's good for them. Our first pediatrician told us to go to the CDC and FDA websites because she didn't have time to discuss the issue with us. I suspect it's because she had never looked into it herself.
Fear monger, no where in my post did I personally attack you. They were valid questions on your previous statement. I have no problem with someone not wanting to have a vaccination, hat's off to you. Don't knock others for wanting to get it. I chose to get it for my kids, they both are fine. I have had many vaccinations through out my life. I can honestly say I never got measles, smallpox, lock jaw, or any of the other things I got a shot for. I chose to get my children these same shot because they worked for me. My wife on the other hand is allergic to egg yolks, she has been unable to take various vaccinations and turned out fine as well. Before you chose to belittle a group of people, because you don't believe in it maybe you should refrain from posting.
I didn't belittle any group. Besides, who said I had the polio shot? My brother-in-law had polio and is fine now as were the vast majority of those who contracted it. Polio has taken on a life of it's own that is nothing close to reality. It was a serious disease that some stats show saw the majority of its decline before the vaccine was introduced. From the late '70 until the live virus version was removed, the vaccine was wholly responsible for all polio in this country. Not the deliverance I'm looking for in a drug.
Wow HPV is not fun and very easy to catch and so easy not to get if you are vaccinated! HPV causes cancer! If you had a way to protect your daughter from this terrible disease with the series of vaccinations why in the world wouldn't you do it!! Most insurances cover it. Kids are going to have sex with or without your permission so be smart and protect your child!!!! There is a lot of HPV out there so do the right thing and save your child!!!!! Boys get it too!!!!
@Penny-3798758 - most insurances do NOT cover it, or only a small portion of it. Potentially, I suspect it is because it is so new and long-term studies don't exist from enough credible resources to warrant it per the insurance carriers' guidelines of allowable drug vaccinations. My daughter got very sick from the vaccine, so we also only went through the first phase and then stopped. I would pay out of my own pocket if I thought it was warranted, even outside of insurance, but I'm still not convinced yet.
Go to Dr. Tenpenny's website and consult the truth about the harmful effects this will have on boys. She has creditable sources and is allied with vast numbers of doctors and researchers who not only do NOT reccomend this for boys, but do not reccomend this for girls either. Please do the research and stop playing Russian Roullette with your children's mental and physical health and their sterility.
I wonder why, back in the day, we didn't hear about genital warts, chlamydia, AIDS, etc. Hmmmmm, we didn't sleep with everyone we met? I think it's kinda funny that instead of talking about the total decay of our morals and values, we try to figure out how to cure or prevent the consequences of our decadent behavior. We talk about teenagers having sex like it's nothing, or worse, expected. Going to bed is just part of the date. ICK.
You go right ahead and stick the needle full of vaccine into your son. No one knows the long term effect of what it will do. I will teach both of my sons how to put a condom on and to try and stay away from the whores.
that is a completely inacurrate and ignorant statement.....The chances are quite high that you and or your wife have been exposed to to HPV....Think about that before you label millions of women as whores!!!
Thank You Greg. I'am not a whore I'am a 56 yr. old woman who was diagnosed with cervical cancer in May. My last pap smear was normal. My husband has been dead almost 7 yrs. And I have been with noone since. We were only married 21 months. My doctor told me this virus can lay dormate in your body for years. So possiably I caught this from my previous fiance. I caught him in bed with someone else.
FYI Vince, if you look at a condom through a high powered microscope, you will find that it is not a solid piece of latex. It works like the filter in your air conditioning. It can stop sperm because they are too big to get through the filter. However, the HPV virus, is smaller than a sperm, it has no problem getting through. Granted, it would be harder for a man to get HPV from a woman if he is wearing a condom, but if he has the virus, his seminal fluid would pick up the virus on it's way out, hit the condom, and seep through. That is why the virus is so prevalant in girsl. The only 100% way to prevent the transmission of this disease is to have only monogomous (sp?) sex, and to both partners have to be virgins. Telling our children to "use a condom" to prevent the spread of disease is stupid, since it only slows it down.
Now, if they put anti-viral cream on the condom, maybe that would help.
My only concern with these vaccine is we don't know what the long term affects will be. Suppose I give this vaccine to my daughter just to find out 10 years from know it made her sterile, or it prevents cervical cancer but causes some form of another cancer? I just don't think there's enough long-term information on this vaccine just yet.
I had my own suspicions when Merck hit the tv with its HPV ads encouraging young girls to get the vaccination. It was a "ram-it-home" sell.
Then I began to hear of the painfully inflamed clitoral areas, the fainting, and other painful unpleasant side effects produced in certain young girls by this vaccine.
The slammer was when Rich Perry was exposed for his executive order requiring that girls of a certain age receive the vaccine. He knew it wouldn't pass in the Texas legislature so he "executed" it. But the wary wise parents clamored until Perry had to back off from his cash cow. Wonder if he had to give any money back to Merck - all $30,000?
Lastly, those HPV hammerheads supporting it on this vine are really hanging onto this vine for an inordinant length of time which communicates to me that their agenda is more pharm driven. If so, then they're a bunch of baboons masquerading as fools. NUF SED! ! !
My sister faints every single time she gets a shot.
Why would a systemic vaccine for a virus cause swelling specifically in the genital area? That doesn't even make sense.
janierock, I've looked at millions of creditable website, (no I'm not talking about the naturesown.com that tells me to eat a toadstool. But the CDC and the drug makers website that posts every side effect of the drug, and every medical drug book my wife has. No where in there does it say that it causes inflamed clitoral area. It says it causes inflammation in the shot area but the shot administered in the deltoid (arm). It does hurt, and some do faint. My son also faints with a penicillin shot mostly to the glob of stuff injected into his butt cheek. Neither one of my children (boy and girl) ever fainted from these shots, nor did she ever complain of swelling in her genital area.
Try and enforce a law in my state that I have to vaccinate my children with this crap and you better have your affairs in order.
For some reason the website link didn't go thru - google hpv side effects then you will see the cdc site that lists all the side affects. #Serious - trying to post the website again!

Low rates of vaccination are most likely due to cost, many people lack adequate coverage. Insurance will not cover the shot for boys at all, $360 is hard to swallow for many people...especially in this economy.
This still sounds too much like an end-run-around ... "if the girls won't take the expensive vaccine, then let's get the boys to take it instead." I believe in proven vaccines for our kids and my kids (16 & 18) are fully vaccinated against general diseases (rubio, polio, etc.) I don't believe that vaccines cause austism, despite my neice with 3 austistic kids - she tends to forget all the drugs and alcohol she used in her youth (and still does to this day) as a more contributing factor than any vaccine, which has never been proven anyways. But I still have not seen enough proof that this particular vaccine is needed for HPV. My oldest daughter started taking this, but the first phase of the injection made her very sick and hurt at the site of the injection, so we stopped the process. Unless they can figure out how to make the prevention less risky and painful than the disease, I'll sit back and watch for now. If my son later wants to take it before he's 26, I'll let him make that decision.
My two teenage granddaughters have had this vaccine no side effects or pain. But I know everyone is different. If this vaccine had been available when I was a teenager maybe I wouldn't have cervical cancer now. And no I'am not promiscuious. My cancer was caught early Stage One. Ladies I urge you get those pap smears. This virus can lay dormate for years.
My boys are now adults, but I can say with our any reservation, yes I would have them vaccinated against this dreadful virus.
Hey Stevie-445471. When you mention this dreadful virus, are you talking about HPV? The same virus that 50-70 percent of sexually active Americans have been exposed to? The one that MAY cause cervical cancer in 12,00 women each year although 20 million adults have it? Seems to me I'd reserve a word like dreadful for something more dreadful. There's a good chance you have it Stevie...dirty boy.
WOW....Really? I guess till someone close to you is diagnosed with cervical cancer or you are diagnosed with penile or anal cancer, you will change your mind!
Relax Greg. You obviously missed the point. If Gardasil works at all, it is effective against 2 or 3 of the more than 15 strains of HPV that can cause HPV. HPV doesn't always cause cervical cancer - not even close. There are real concerns that the vaccine is dangerous and the virus isn't so much. If you want to roll the dice, go ahead. I'm just pointing out that this is potentially low risk for potentially low reward. I'll take my chances with good nutrition and exercise. I also have a sense of humor which helps with your immune system. Try it out some time. BTW having the vaccine years ago would be no guarantee that your loved one would be spared. I have plenty of people close to me with illnesses not on your approved list. Too bad your type of illnesses are worse than ours.
Since Gardasil doesn't protect you against stupidity, I guess you're S*** out of luck.
You might not like my comments Greg, but where's the stupidity?

I agree fear-monger, out of the over 1 million people that have received this injection only 26 have died. That puts it at about the same rate as aspirin and rye's-syndrome, or toxic shock syndrome and tampons. Wait, even better yet, if your case is to be acknowledged. the penicillin shot (or tablet) will kill me. In fact almost all cases of a penicillin shot has redness and soreness at the site, but I am one of the 5% allergic that will actually die from the shot. If your correct, aspirin, tampons, and penicillin should never be sold.... ever. Wow, wait and while were at it. Egg yolks, bee stings, we need to get rid off all of it. NO ONE SHOULD BE FORCED TO EAT EGG YOLKS!!!! IT MUST BE REMOVED FROM MAYONNAISE!!!!!
Fear Monger,
And your point is....
Hmmmm....
"I never make the mistake of arguing with people for whose opinions I have no respect"
I forgot peanuts, lots of people have an allergic reaction to those. More so then reactions to a shot. Sorry, but my risk for inoculation for HEP A, HEP B, Polio, MMR, Tetanus, Meningitis, far outweigh my risk of soreness or headaches. Then again, I also have been given , smallpox, and anthrax... you want to talk about side effects. Yellow fever too. I wonder if your child was bitten by a rabid dog if you would question the rabies vaccine. You should look up the side effects for that too.
Stevie. The point is that this is not the scourge that those who are pushing this would have us believe. From the CDC:
"Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, in the past 40 years, the number of cases of cervical cancer and the number of deaths from cervical cancer have decreased significantly."
Many (or most) of us carry HPV yet as you can see from above, Cervical cancer has decreased significantly.
It's a small risk and yes, if it happens to a loved one, it can be devastating. The vaccine isn't close to guaranteeing protection but it has real risks associated with it. The government is moving in the direction of making this another required vaccination. If not for the sexual association, I think it already would be. My point is that it will soon be forced on our kids and there aren't yet proven benefits. This is about choice. I just want people to be informed and have the option to take or reject this and other vaccines.
I was one of the 12,000 women each year. I had 3 miscarriages because of it before they found the problem. I would have chosen the shot over the living hell I went through for year.s
Thank You TamL. I also was one of those 12,000. And yes I would have had the shot also if they had of had it then. Thank God my cervical cancer was found early Stage One. But yes it's hell I had a total hysterectomy.
It should be up to the individual to get vaccinnated. Although, I know where you are going with this, but I have been brought up my entire life with "no shots"... I believe that we all need to take responsibility of one's self...if one is sick...one needs to stay away from others. If everyone would take responsibility...then there would not be a problem. By taking in shots to keep one healthy, does not mean that in 50 years it does damage to the one that took the shots.
Mike the problem with your logic is that HPV can be asymptomatic for up to 10 years. You can have it and spread it with out knowing you have it. Read- You will look and feel healthy. I've been treated for HPV and never once did I feel sick or have any symptoms indicating there was a problem. I had regular pap smears for 8 years and then BOOM abnormal. There is no test for HPV in Men. Condoms do not protect as they do not cover all the skin in the area. This is a vaccine that must be given before someone become sexually active to be effective. I don't think any kid is going to say "Yes I want this shot." Good luck in getting everyone to just abstain from having sex, which is about the only way not to spread the virus.
Thank You Sarah. Like you regular pap smears and wham abnormal. And I'am 56 yrs. old. Haven't been with anyone since my husband died almost 7 yrs. now. We had been married only 21 months. Have Stage One cervical cancer and had a total hysterectomy.
